Love the casual git-r-done approach, no tape, no change in grit size, just experience with the right confidence and touch/ feel.

I like to go 1000grit dry on a nitro neck.

The MFD single coils Leo designed for G&L have steel plates and ceramic magnets. One of my favorite pickups of all time! ASAT Special baby!

I accept your ruling on the matter of inductance with the steel plate. Dylan knows! Dylan's goal is to inform and educate. Dylan has no reason to feed us misinformation.

A 3M fine-grit dry wall sanding sponge works even better at sanding off gloss. I've tried about every kind of normal sandpaper and the dry wall sponge is definitely the best method.

I've been removing the gloss off of the back of the necks of my guitars for a long time using green "Scotch Brite" scouring pads which are medium grit. Rubbing the green side on the neck finish, removes the gloss in small, safe increments. They can be used either wet or dry
I understand that "Scotch Brite" offers pads in many grits from very fine to coarse. They last for many repeated applications and I've never worn one out. After use, you just wash them with soapy warm water to remove the fine lacquer residue, and they're good o go.

Hey there! Thanks for the vid. If the fretboard were glossy, would that make a big difference if that were sanded too?

Awesome video! I think I will try this on my older Squier acoustic which has a painted/ stained neck, but is glossy and try not to end with a really dull looking finish. Did you ever do that fret board edge rolling video?

How about a maple fret board? Thanks. I’ve heard of 0003 -4 steel wool . Same results? Thanks again for your help.

Do the p-bass pickups also have a steel plate? Are they similar to a p-90?

FWIW - I put a steel plate under the bridge PU on my strat and it totally changed the tone (in a good way to my ear). I had the guitar for 15 years and almost never used the bridge PU before (all were Fender custom shop pickups) and now I use it all the time. All bc of the $10 metal plate I installed. I could have spent years swapping PU’s and tone hunting…

Leo Fender never spent a penny on a guitar component that he didn't have to spend.
If Leo spent the money in including the baseplate then it made a difference.
We are talking about the man who said to only polish the first inch of the Tele bridge plate to save costs.

I keep telling my old lady she only needs to polish the first inch.

ScotchBrite Green to pull off the thick coats on the back of the neck and ScotchBrite Blue to make it slick. You may already have it under your kitchen sink.

You know damn well that the guy that made the argument about the plate making no difference is going to say that you put it on the top of the magnets instead of on the bottom of the pickup. Why wouldn’t you just set the pickup on top of the plate to prove your point and take away any “yeah but” moments?
