  • The marmot hunting is an exciting activity dedicated to bagging the wildlife trophies. It is popular among hunting community since it is quite simple and results in acquiring several kilograms of tasty meat and precious fur.
The main features of marmot hunting helping to increase the success even for an unexperienced shooter.
The bobak marmot is placed in the Scuridae family. Its weight reaches up to 10 kilograms. The bobak marmot dwells on open space - in the steppes.
Large populations of bobak marmot are met in Mongolia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and around Ural Mountains.
Hunting marmot in Russia is legal during the period when the trophy hunting season is not opened yet, i.e. during offseason. Marmot meat is very healthy, as well as its fat. This is since Marmot exclusively feeds on the Herbs and roots and is very selective.
Generally, marmots are being hunted with rifled firearms. Dmitri chose to use his Blaser R8 carbine chambered for .30-06 caliber with a Swarovski IS-6 scope possessing magnification power from x3 Up to x18, and loaded with SAKO cartridges, sometimes referred to as the stitching awl cartridge, with 8-gram bullet. Before every hunt and change of ammo type, One must carefully zero-in the rifle at the shooting range.
    1. This time, Dmitri and his son Saveli headed for the hunting enterprise “Rodnie Prostori”, which is located 850 kilometers away from the city of Yekaterinburg. This is Orenburg oblast’, the village Veselovski, where Dmitri and Saveli are met by the gamekeeper Sergei Alekseevich. The tickets were prepared beforehand. The trip to this location took 12 hours.
Ticket for the marmot hunt costs 200 roubles, and each bagged marmot another 1000 roubles. The wounded game costs 500 roubles. The hunters were accommodated in a small hostel, which costed 2000 roubles per person.
    2. After the long road and a brief rest, the hunters headed for the evening hunt.
    The weather was brutal.
It was very hot -- +42 degrees Celcius, and no wind at all. However, the lack of wind was beneficial for the hunters, as wind is an obstacle for achieving their goals.
This evening, Dmitri managed to bag only one marmot at a distance of 250 meters, though, there was a chance to bag more game.
It is worth noting that this is not a shooting range, it’s a true field conditions with all connected complications - unbearable heat, dust in the eyes and lack of sufficient time for aiming.
    3. The morning of the second day. Dmitri and Saveli have bagged one marmot each.
The gamekeeper Sergei Alexeevich, who guided the hunters, turned out to be a real professional, knowing all his land and the marmot burrows on it.
He got the nerves of steel and reacted adequately on the misses and misfortunes that hunters had experienced. This took a huge part in forming the good impression about this hunt.
    4. When hunting the marmot, a typical shooting distance is between 50 and 1000 meters. This allows one to bag the game using evem smooth-bore weaponry.
    5. Marmot spends days in its burrow and leaves it to feed only in the morning and evening, for three hours. Hence, the hunters now know from personal experience what the ground-hog day is, as they had to adjust their timetable to the marmot’s.
They’ve slept during days and nights, and spent their morning and evenings in the steppe.
Altogether, during 3 hunting days, Dmitri and Saveli were able to bag 7 marmots - Dmitri took 5 of them, and Saveli shot 2. The intended goal was achieved, even though, it was their first time hunting the marmot.
