      +Crystalwolf 1996 That really depends on which wood you use! The second version katana made out of strong birch plywood can definitely stand some hits.

    Alternatively if one does not possess a good drill for the handle; leave the handle a bit wide when cutting and cut two pieces of wood roughly the same shape and size as the handle. Glue the two pieces to the handle and sand it down to the right shape. Then follow his steps to wrap it. This technique is usually used for western style swords but is versatile enough for anything requiring a handle. Love the video btw. Been binge watching various woodworking vids to help me with my project and this one reminded me I had a hot glue gun somewhere so thanks :D

    Very nice, although I would comment on one thing: Hot glue isn't the best curing glue for combining wood pieces, though I realize some people only have access to this, I would suggest getting some of the Gorilla Wood Glue that Gorilla Glue offers. Hope this helps in your future endeavors! :)

    Nice work. Might I suggest a spoke shave for creating the blade? They are rather inexpensive and a hand tool. I used it a few times while forming a wooden blade and it puts a very nice and crisp edge on it. It will also save you about 40 minutes and a very tired arm lol.

  • @MagnusMoerkoereJohannesen
    @MagnusMoerkoereJohannesen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice, but there are a few things I would have done differently. For the blade, I'd have used a plane to get it down to size, and then only sanded it a little, to get rid of the roughest patches. Second, for the 'tang' I would've drilled holes in both the grip and the blade, and inserted either a pair of plugs, or metal rods of some sort. That integral tang is just too weak. And lastly, hot glue isn't going to last more than a few weeks; use PVA. It's strong, durable, easy to use, cheap and easy to get a hold of.

  • @p.j.c.2.0
    @p.j.c.2.0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have made the blade & the handle out of one hole peace wood and glued 2 peaces of really thin wood to both sides of the handle to add some measure to the handle so shaping it to look like a sword handle would be easier with some sandpaper or a wood shaving blade and made the tsuba the same way you did but I would have made the hole the center thinner so it would still fit over the blade and rested on the handle and used a super strong wood glue to hold it all together.
    if you like to see some of mine I really did some work on them let me know in the comments OK .

    • @WoodenWeaponry
      @WoodenWeaponry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right. This way the katana will be much sturdier.. But also the plank you'll need to buy would have to be about 30cm longer.. Back then I didn't think about this being an opportunity to make this very sturdy, when I nowadays make a katana such as the Genji katana, I make it out auf one solid piece, just like you said :)
      Greetings, Wooden Weaponry
      PS: I really would like to see your katana! Im always curious how my templates work for others ;)

    • @WoodenWeaponry
      @WoodenWeaponry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it really depends on the woodglue you use. The pin-method is pretty weak when one uses normal woodglue ( or hotglue! ). So I wouldn't recommend doing that.. But the Genji katana I made definitely works. ( One could of course use the swordmaking-methid I used for the genji-katana for this one, but I can't give you the templates for this ) Have a nice day! :)

      Yes, you could do following: Use 12mm wood for the handle, cut ( with a saw ) a fitting slot in it so that the pin of the blade fits into the slot, then cover both sides of the handle with 4mm plywood and glue it all together :)

    might as well make a proper one piece bokken with the time you spent and have it functional.
    most people that makes this will have a broken off handle 2 minutes after completion from trying to wack something or even just dropping it the wrong way.

      also if anyone who makes this does smack a few things, even lightly shouldnt be swinging it around after incase the thing comes apart and fly into someomes face.

      If you mean the connection between handle and blade, IT really depends on the woodglue you use :)

      When a metal katana is forged, the shape of the blade is similar. But wood is not strong enough to cope with the impact of a blow. I also think the handle is going to break as the glue is stronger than the wood. Nevertheless, it's a fine wooden sword to hang up somewhere.
