Why not just put it straight through the combine? Surely this would reduce compaction and fuel costs. Is this a variety for the seed market maybe? Instead of food oil that goes straight through a combine

Being a tall crop with pods along a fair length of the stem means die off is irregular, with the tops well ahead of the pods lower down. 2 methods are used to achieve an even die off. One is to spray the crop and the other is to do what is done here, swathing it and let it die off evenly over several weeks. Either way losses do occur as the dried pods are very brittle and open easily. the losses occur at the front of the combine and it is hard to avoid.

‘Swathing’ or ‘swothing’ oilseed rape. Basically mowing it, for it too wilt and die ready for the combine.

Seems to be losing quite a lot of crop along the edges of each planted width. Why were so many open tramlines left in the crop?

For me it's unnecessary loss of crop. You cut out the vegetation when the rapeseed still produces tonnage. Simply that's just loss of money.
