Good make a private network whit out the internet at home...and have fun using programs and games...also do some work in windows office...use a old printer that uses old drives and a old antivirus version that works in win xp...that way you can protect and use .. from others computers in your home network whit other operating sys remember don't use your xp computer and connected to the Internet use one that is updated whit other operating sys and antivirus , win 7, win 8 or win 10 that will keep your xp computer save and you will be available to shear programs ,old games, data and office work whit your old win xp computer whit out connecting it to the internet

Just because a virus isn't written for XP doesn't mean it won't run on XP. If the exploit in use also exists on XP and the virus program doesn't attempt to do anything exclusive to newer versions of windows, the virus could still infect an XP machine - and XP is no longer receiving updates to fix these exploits.

Once deep freeze is install and set up, then you can just save any important documents such as office, music, etc. to remove all media such as flash drive or external hard drive. Another suggestion is run your windows XP in a virtual machine and keep a snapshot of the ready

Windows 7 is generally still fine to use if, and only if, you use an updated browser (ex. Edge). There are ways to get extended service patches up to 2022 though, but it takes a bit of effort to do so. Antivirus + up to date browser + common sense is a valid substitute (for now). I still use Windows 7 daily on my Latitude E6410 for school, though I have 2FA turned on with all accounts on that laptop, and I don't login to accounts that I don't have 2FA for.

I would really love to keep using XP, but with 3rd party software makers no longer making their updated software compatible with XP, I am forced to upgrade. I went to Windows 7 after a new game could not run on XP. Firefox and Chrome stopped their updates, meaning that more recent web sites might have issues displaying properly. Many more software no longer run on XP, which limits the usefulness of the OS.

Nice video! I wonder if disabling the internet access but retaining the LAN is a more secure way than worrying about AV & firewall robustness. I guess it all comes down to what you want to use the machine for. In my case I'd want to use it as a time capsule; so with all the old unpatched productivity software and games of that period. That way a LAN where I can access shares but nothing else might be the most secure way and still allow me to easily pull files from the web. One thing you didn't mention is if imaging the drive (with something like Macrium) is possible? That would be worth doing.

If you airgap the network correctly, there's no harm in leaving it plugged in. I'd even go as far as to make sure none of the other nodes connect to the internet at all, or if they can - make damn sure they're secure.
Disabling internet connectivity within the OS will do precisely nothing to mitigate the abundance of security holes that exist within the operating system itself. The only real way to keep it safe is to make sure that whatever network it touches doesn't go anywhere near the internet. Firewalled or otherwise.

XP security is not particularly a problem for experienced users. The BIG problem (you didn't mention) is almost all new software now tests for operating system type and immediately comes up with "wrong windows version" if you try to install it on XP, even if the software will work fine. A system hack is required to change the XP to windows 7 in the test so software will install. This still can present problems with software that actually will fail under XP.

If you do have an old PC that doesn't have the requirements to run Windows 10 then your better off installing a lightweight version of Linux. I think Ubuntu has a light version.
This will allow you to run updated software and you will have decent security. And it's far less hassle then installing tons of different software and yet still praying that something hasn't crawled into your system some how.

@@danatmonst3594 in the years since microsoft stopped updating XP, the majority of websites one by one stopped serving TLSv1.0 and lesser encryption such as SSLv3 which XP SP3 uses. These websites now serve TLSv1.2 and TLSv1.3 instead which normal XP can't access. Because many cashpoint ATMs still use XP, support was needed for TLS v1.1 and v1.2 and micrsoft then issued a manual update through its KB process. The manual update process is published around the net and involves manually adding some registry keys and a DLL file or something. Windows starts first, then the CNC system is started and takes over full screen.
Fortunately, Windows runs in a restricted user account, Windows settings are not saved. Programs cannot be installed. To change something you have to call the service. An update to a newer operating system is not possible for the user. If something goes wrong, service has to come. Then the hard drive is formatted or replaced. Then a new image is copied. Then you start again from the beginning, but the CNC files (text files) are gone.

So we could only find max out at 2 Gigs per card giving us 4 gigs of ram. The windows 10 operating system requires a minimum of 2 gigs so that allowed a the rest to run our programs. Right now we are sitting at about 75% memory usage doing regular work. We have been going along fine since then but when the time comes for windows 11 we will need new hardware as the units are maxed out and 11 requires a different chip operation.

This method has several benefits. I can use it on any system and can hop it over to another system without changes. A compromised system can be recovered. I don't need a firewall or an antivirus. I can work on two systems on the same hardware in the same moment. I can use Outlook Express, if I really need to, by using a special network connection on a Linux firewall, which allows only email traffic. I can continue to use old software without the back-draws of compatibility or license issues.

Avg is free and the 2018 version still receives virus definition updates. Is there any particular reason you need the 2006 version?

I hear you! XP can be nostalgic. Are you concerned about security risks at all when using it online?

I have a computer that I use for old games that I still have XP on. When download programs or new games I dual boot with Linux and save the files to a folder that is accessible to the windows OS. I can check it for viruses through the Linux software and if it does get something I can scan the windows portion of the disk with the antivirus that is on the Linux system and it will remove it. When running in XP it does not even know that the other system is there. the other thing is that when I go into the windows loader It gives me an option to run dos or XP from dos I can run win 3.1 this is a great way to run old games on native hardware.
