My grandparents have two of these chairs in their house and I never realized the significance its history. Very interesting, insightful, and overall great vid!
sounds like your grandparents had some prettty rad interior decorating style. It was fund doing research about the chairs, I knew the design was popular but it's cool to see how all the pieces came together in the 20s to make them a reality.
I never leave these kind of comments, but honestly you’re a new and exiting channel and I hope you gain a good following over the next year or so! Love watching the videos man.
Glad you liked it G, my G, feels really natural honestly it’s not as if I’m only interesting in fashion. There’s so much art and design that informs the fashion world as is
I love my replica Wassily. It was an impulse bargain buy from eBay. It took 10 years of it sitting awkwardly in corners with many housemates wanting to know why I didn’t get rid of it, before I moved into a house where it had a place to be enjoyed.
There's no way I'm ever contributing to your patreon but gotdamn that was the best pitch for one I've ever heard. Keep on approaching things in the smart and creative way you do, the content is great.
hey at least your honest! Listen not everyone will contribute and I need to figure out multiple ways to drive revenue but I'm always going to try and make the videos interesting, entertaining and a little different than everyone else on the platform.
Great video! Underrated. For me, the chair's design makes sense the first time at 8:45. You can see "two parts" - the straight frame and the tilted body holding part. Very nice
Absolutely love that you've been branching out and talking about topics like design and art. I never really thought that these things could influence my style and fashion, you've really opened my eyes!
they're all connected man, obviously fashion is in its own "space" but visual mediums all influence each other. I find it really natural to talk about design in the same space that I talk about fashion I guess bc I often think about them in a similar way.
Christian, keep up the great work man. I truly appreciate the effort you put into not only making the video and editing it, but the research that goes into it. You’ll go far man. Don’t stop.
Thank you Cam'Ron, really its a labor of love I couldn't spend this time If I didn't love doing the research and editing the videos I'm stoked that people are enjoying the content.
most under rated channel on youtube right now; lets go! keep the magic going man, this is exactly the type of content I wish I had while doing my art history classes back in the day :)
I truly appreciate the amount of research and effort you put into your videos to explain the origin of a product. I am surprised too that you do not have more subscribers.
My father (the lead Code Architect for DFW Airport up until his death in 2007) had two wassily chairs. They were always in our home growing up, I had no clue they were expensive or sought after. I just loved them cause they were a perfect embodiment of my fathers style. My step mother made off with them and a lot of other stuff and we never heard from her again after my fathers funeral. I wish our family still had the chairs just so I could sit in them from time to time and think of my father.
This is my first ever comment but I thought I would say I really like your videos, the direction the channel is going in and your unique perspective. I would love to see more design and art videos, you really tell the story behind it. A random thought about the aesthetic is to find or imagine some photos that you would like to really fit into and embody the vibe.
Hey joe I'm glad you're finally commenting! I'm thrilled people are so responsive to this Wassily chair video and i'm sure there will be more design videos to come (potentially a Dieter Rams video that I've already been working on)
In 2000 I was working for Structure/Express for Men in New Orleans .During the transition of the store's name change they offered the decor/customer wait chairs for sale to the employees. At the time I did not know the history of the chair nor that it was The Wassily Chair. I purchased based on my love for the design/art. I have had the chair for 22 yrs and it still looks nearly new. It is chrome and black leather, with no plastic black caps, no stamp, nor labels anywhere. I know at some point Knolls engraved at the chrome base. I'm just wondering if anyone knows where Structure (Limited Brand) would have purchased these from? Also I do realize the chair is now sold by others not just Knolls. I have only seen these in very nice stores with prices as low as $500, and as high as $3500. How do I find info about my chair? I am not sure how long Structure had these in their stores before it was sold to me. I may never know where my chair was originally purchased but hoping someone can help. Btw where is yours from?
Finally someone who pronounces it correctly! Page Wassel, Nick Lewis, all pronounce it Wah-silly. I remember on an episode of Frasier, he pronounced it Wah-see-lee, so I set out to find out just what the proper pronunciation is.
Loved this video! I feel fashion, art, and architecture are all intertwined and influenced by one another so future videos on artists and design movements would be cool and also be on brand!
Thank you Annie! I try to keep it in mind, I personally feel like the intermixing of these subjects is natural so I'm looking forward to making more like it
I think he meant "least cozy" in that it doesn't LOOK cozy, with its exposed steel frame and minimal use of fabric, not that it's not comfortable. Comfort is an important function for a chair to have, and Bauhaus is, after all, about form following function.
really interesting point, it certainly looks like it wouldn't be cozy especially compared to a traditional club chair / lazy boy type of overstuffed chair. And certainly it has to be comfortable, just being stripped down and uncomfortable would basically make the chair less functional.
Oh yess I’m gonna love this channel reaching most areas in design finally a discussion (an entertaining one) on the wassily chair as an example...yasss to fashion, furniture, art, design, and architecture 😍😍
!!stoked you found us Broke Boi, I know a lot of people want more discussions of art and design (and not just fashion) I guess theres not enough of this content here on YT.
hey, I was writing a paper about the chair and this video helped me a lot, but since I need to put the sources at the end of my paper I don't know if youtube link would be appropriate, so about the war and arm split thing can you recommend me some sources please, and again, the video was so catchy so thanks for that.
You make me feel better every episode, ur just very nice to listen to. Unfortunately I'm really unemployed and I can't help you regularly, but on streams I could donate couple zlotys
i appreciate it Belkot, this is a very tough time for everyone and i don't expect anyone to give who cant. I figured I might as well get the patreon out there and if people can give thats great. But as always I'm just thrilled that people watch and enjoy the content.
Howdy Christian 🤠, super stoked to see you cover Bauhaus & the B3 Chair. Might I recommend an amazing book called Bauhaus by Magdalena Droste, It’s Published by Taschen and it’s a really good source of information about the Bauhaus school and the 3 Directors of the School
howdy Mustapha, sounds like a really interesting book. If the library opens up again i'd love to request that title otherwise maybe I can find it used online. Would love to do more research
Funny watching this video about this amazing Bauhaus chair and in the same time living in Dessau-Roßlau the town where the main Bauhaus school is situated. Also in my town all the famous furnitures were designed. Crazy
I don´t know if this is going to sound dumb but what exactly is the function?Yes, we clearly have the aesthetic and the form but how do I connect it with the function?
I think it’s worth it :) and if you can afford it all the more reason to get an official knoll or at least an older model from 1st dibs or a similar site
Brave New Wear I was actually kidding with the stimulus check, Im from Europe but would never pay more than 100 for a chair, however, if it’s a classic like this one..and I fell in love with it. Thanks for your great video, really appreciate it and I didn’t find something similar on TH-cam. Can you see the difference and or have clues to spot a model when it was produced in the Gavina time (before Knoll)?
...wait a second...theres plenty of fashion archive hypebeasts...wheres like the 1dibs/ hyped archive furniture people? We might have stumbled on a goldmine! Only problem is...I think it's a lot more expensive to get into archive furniture then fashion, certainly harder to store it.
I inherited a set of these chairs recently and always thought they were cool. How can you tell if they are authentic vs replicas? I've seen conflicting info so I wanted to see if you had any insights on that. Thanks for this video!

HEY take a look I actually got my own version of the chair! Pizza day doesn't come until the end of the school year, or like after a big class project.
What makes the Wassily chair so cool is that its called a 'Wassily' chair is afetr Wassily Kandisnky NOT because it sells better!! The chair was not specificly designed for the non-objective painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was on the Bauhaus faculty at the same time. Kandinsky had admired the completed design, and Breuer fabricated one for Kandinsky's personal quarters. The chair became then "Wassily"
I’ve read that the manufacturer Gavina named it the wassily when they started reproducing it and I make the conclusion that they probably figured people would recognize Wassily Kandinsky’s name consider B3 is pretty abstract
I have two light green ones that take up a lot of space when i put them side by side so i only wanted one and i couldn't give one away no one wanted it.

this article is awesome! I hope all of my research holds up (even if it's a brief overview of the bauhaus) I would love to see Berlin, its on my "must visit" list I hear the city is relatively affordable and the nightlife is fun. And in terms of doing "non-fashion related content" it really just feels natural to me. I love art and design as well so I'm glad people are enjoying it.
My only personal contact with this iconic piece of furniture called Wassily was the 14-year old me getting strongly into fashion (and I'm not exactly talking about the things other kids were attracted to, but deeper stuff) Runways, photography and architecture. A world I built for myself without realising but indeed, enjoying to live in it. Even tho trying to hold my, probably not appropriative for my age, passion back, because I realised I would only be judged, I was proud of my ability to analyse a fashion show, and also to pronounce Wassily correctly, German. Yeah, thats actually what I wanted to say. Isn't it prounounced German?
That’s dope I love to hear that it resonates with people - I’m PRETTY sure wassily is technically pronounced the German way so yeah it would be “vassily” rather than the w sound in English
