  • Blindness is an invisible disability.
When she was 5 years old, Kym Dekeyrel was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative genetic condition that causes loss of vision.
In her 20s, she was diagnosed with lupus, carrying symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. During surgery to correct liver failure caused by complications from lupus, Dekeyrel almost died from excessive blood loss.
Although she survived, any remaining vision she had was gone, leaving her feeling “empty” and “lost,” until, with the help of her husband, Adam, she found CrossFit.
In an emotional, candid, and raw interview, Dekeyrel shares her story about living with blindness and accepting the reality of her disability, overcoming fears and defying stereotypes, and finding herself, confidence, and empowerment through CrossFit.
“It’s incredible that it took the sport of CrossFit for me to not only be able to admit to being blind, but to being proud.” - Kym Dekeyrel, 2021 CrossFit Games Champion, Women’s Vision division

I'm legally blind in my right eye and often wonder if I lose my vision in my other eye, how would I continue to to do CF. Now I know it's not only possible, but you can keep doing it at a high level! I've also wanted to help the blind community discover the magic of Crossfit and this documentary has inspired me. Thank you so much!

We have a guy at Bonnie and clyde crossfit CO with vision impaired, I also have hard of hearing and a scoliosis. If me and him partner for warm-ups, it gets me a bit fear bc I'm not able to always hear it's an odd partner up tho. Overall, I'm happy he's doing the workout and part of crossfit gym.

I'm not necessarily proud, but I accept the legal blindness that I've had since2012 in the same way that I've accepted bring born with hydrocephalus in 1965. I deal with it and learn what I can do every day.
I have one superpower: I compulsively read with my ears.

what an inspirational story. I am 36 and visually impaired only see 5-10 percent!! it is not easy every day but I am making the best of it... I found blind and visually impaired tennis 3 years ago. and that's when I started playing and love that sport. now I train 4 times a week and won silver medal at last year's IBSA world games (those games are like parylympics but only for athletes with visually impairment and blindness)! I am so proud of myself to achieve that. And my next goal is to get gold medal in this years world championships in Italy in September. (so for everyone that is interested in that sport can contact me... I do have a TH-cam Channel Blind Tennis Luxembourg, there is not a lot of videos on it but I am working on that) :-)
