Gran Turismo review
Platform: PlayStation
Release Year: 1997
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
The genesis of the real driving simulator, although other Gran Turismo and racing games have been released throughout the years, the original Gran Turismo on the PS1 is still fun to play to this day and will always be one of the most revolutionary racing games for years to come... - เกม
Fun fact: The Arcade mode was actually a last minute addition because the Japanese developers worried that Gran Turismo mode would be too complicated/boring for the American audience, thus explaining why the arcade mode is a lot more fast-paced and sharp and jumpy than the simulation counterpart.
Lol they didn't think highly of us.
@3213232 1231223 to be fair, they're kinda right lol
Lol as a kid the arcade mode was too complicated for me damnit
same reason for not releasing 3 final fantasy games in america back in the day
gran turismo mode is where the fun is
This game means so much to me. I was 16 when it came out and literally, my life was never the same.
My love for Japanese cars and racing is still like it was then.
I've always found it majorly annoying that this series isn't on PSN. The only reason I can think of, is maybe Polyphony and Sony think of the older games like sports titles, and don't believe many people would download them. Not sure if that's the reason, but I would have happily given them money to legally play GT1 and GT2 on my PSP. I eventually gve up and found another way though.
Yeah, if I could play GT3/GT4, I would pay twice what the newer games cost.
BawesomeBurf licenses.
like Toyota.
Kyle Soler Polyphony owns the exclusive rights to Toyota road cars atm
Even more annoying that it was only and still is only a PS game. Imagine the mods and graphics if it was released on PC. That ~200 car roaster would be ten times the size!
Very simple reason why they're not on the PSN - Licensing. I bet all of the contracts from back then have run out and don't allow them to re-release the games.
Renewing the contracts would be a time and money consuming process and the chances of getting the same licenses as back then is low. Especially with manufacturers that don't exist anymore
Exactly what I was thinking. Between the cars and the soundtracks, the headaches and up-front costs to re-license everything would be quite high, and the return on such an investment isn't too likely to net them much of a profit (if any) when all is said and done.
if the manufacturers dont exist then neither do the licenses
one of the very first game I bought back in 1998. oh the memory. I remember I was blown away the first time I pop the Gran Turismo cd it.
I remember playing this for the first time at a friends house. He gave me a Viper to drive with... I drove... in a circle...because I was so bad. :D Like WTF is this game.
Then, two weeks later I bought it and after a while I was really good in the game.
I like The intro. That cool Chemical Brothers rmx just brings you in the mood for some driving.
BTW, there is a GT for the N64. It's just not a Polyphony game. Just jumped onto the hype train 20 years ago... :D
Trump 2016 Yes, it was the very first game for me as well, along with the original PlayStation! ✌
Oh wow. I never even noticed the skyscrapers in Grand Valley.
Dynamite Grizzly grand valley is the circuit on the outskirts of newriver city where the special stage is
One thing I will say Gran Turismo 1 does better than any of it's sequels is the Soundtrack,, My god it was awesome.
I've been playing it recently, the issue with the music is there is less than 10 songs, I think around 8. It gets really repetitive really fast.
I got the copy that didn't destitute the feeder songs, so the soundtrack was lacking
FAR FROM GOD
@@wackoyacko4541 AS ANGELS CAAAAN FLYYYYYYYYY
@@mileskosik472 i actually don't like because in menus they made like 1 song and overused it in different speed or parts. GT2 had so many more themes and different between them
That intro sequence, back in the day, was utterly mind blowing - possibly the best race sim intro defining a genre. Epic soundtrack. Hair on back of neck stuff. It is hard to communicate how revolutionary this game was when it came out.
In addition to the obvious graphics, stand out features were the option to play arcade (child) style or simulation (adult). Licenses, winning credits to trade and upgrade cars starting with second hand market - it was such a feeling of game progression that seems lost with modern titles. It was also my first experience with dual analog and rumble. Just fantastic.

I think most of the GT series is unavailable due to the licensed music in the games.
Amongst other licensed IP.
I agree, probably due to licenses. Can be the cars as well. There's no Gran Turismo on the playstation classic either.
It would be so cool of Gran Turismo 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 were remade or remastered. I am bummed Forza Motorsport 4 isn't available for backwards compatibility on Xbox One for the same reasons.
@Toby Hofmans The comment I made was meant more as a response to Colorshed's complaint about the older GT games not being re-released in any form on newer consoles.
My earliest memory is using the corvette on the oval track .
I went to a random game store to find NFS Hot Pursuit 2 for PS2 and found this game for only $2. I was even more thrilled when I went to buy it the cashier (which I assume is the owner) and he gave it to me for FREE. I've always wanted to go back and find all the vintage racing games from the PS1 & PS 2 era at that store but unfortunately, it's too far of a drive to go there regularly.
I find the licenses hard. The point of driving in a straight line and braking is to test how well you can test your balance between throttle and braking. It's crucial to learn these types of tests in order to become a professional driver. If not used properly, then accidents can happen, kind of like how real life works.
The intro of GT1 is STILL so hype even today in 2021
The GT demo was my introduction to the Playstation. Such an amazing series.
It took five years to develop? So works on Gran Turismo actually started in like 1992/1993?
It was probably supposed to be a thing on this wierd Sony/Nintendo prototype
@@berkan5578 the nintendo playstation?
Was meant to be a CD add on for a Nintendo console probably 64. Sony just ended up doing there thing and made the PlayStation
@@yumyumishappy1934 actually an add on for the snes similar to the sega cd
@@rickyrosay33977 close enough
the game that started it all for me, my love of cars , i remember going around trial mountain and valley raceway when i was about 2 , nothings changed to this day, this is nostalgia for me.
05:20 I dont think that's a rubber banding, you see You're using R33 Skyline, which is a heavy car, you pass an MR2, even though that car is 36 HP less than R33 the car is light, of course the AI can keep up with you, plus you're racing in Autumn Ring, almost no straight line to speeding up. Maybe you should've use Corvette or Viper instead so you can leave them in the dust
Agreed. Light, well handling cars will absolutely excel on a track like that. On say GT4 I could use the Honda CR-X Type R at about 200bhp and beat 500bhp monsters due to it's low weight, great handling, and snappy turbo response.
Great review of Gran Turismo dude.
To me the Driving school is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS in the entire game, thanks to that I learned some racecraft in which I apply every single time I run a Sim or I hit the track
I tell ppl as well I learnt very real driving skills from this series.... :)
Loved the hell out of this game. I still play it today. The best "cheat" or tactic that I had was to obtain the Dodge Copperhead from the USA vs JAPAN series and max it out. Every series that it was allowed in, you dominated. And the licenses were super fun. If you have a buddy over, you can compete to see who has the fastest time on some of them. Of course, not the ones where you race in a straight line.
You would get a FIA Approved DRIVING MANUAL when you bought the game back in 1998 within the case. It taught me how to drive a car when I was a kid and influenced my love for cars!
The 98 Mitsubishi GTO was so broken in this game. I squeezed about 1000hp out of it. Smacked everything practically by just holing down the accelerator. Loved it
I'm a big car guy, own a playstation and I have never owned a gran turismo game. It makes no sense though as I have owned the stock versions of most cars I have seen in this video lol. I should really pick it up!
GT4 is the best one to revisit imo. It doesn't rely on discontinued online features and still looks good enough to enjoy without making excuses for its appearance.
the pixel bluriness adds to the charm its like a fuzzy dream sequence
Yeah This Game rocked in many ways, specially graphics .
Used to drive that Oval Backwards for Hours trying to get Faster ,417Km/h with a Dodge Viper..
When I hear a Honda , it always remembers me of Gran Turismo
Because I always started with a Honda.
I remember driving the Ford Gt40 in GT made a Big impression on me.
Same with driving the XJ220 in TOCA2.
I was more a TOCA fan.....
The 1st Colin McRea Rally Game was also Epic,
With a very nice Replay Video.
Greetings !
I own a PS2, a PS3, a PS4, 3 PSPs, and a PS Vita, but don't have any Gran Turismo games in my library
What AM I?!
This is the reason why i still playing older game on epsxe & PS2
You have an awesome channel keep the good work
This triggered hardcore nostalgia, especially the menus, the music, ect
Good thing is my Ps3 had the ability to play PS1 games so I bought this game and play it for nostalgia feeling.
I am from Saudi back in ps1 and ps2 era we can't afford to had the original copy so we always buy the pirate copy...
But now I had the jobs and manage to obtain all the games that I loved from the original PlayStation and ps2 era.
GT was totally and utterly revolutionary. Honestly 10/10 game.
I cant believe you forgot to mention the event car rewards, everytime you won an event you will get a prize car, GT League and endurance races only give you one prize car, where in another events 2 different cars, in different color! For example that Viper GTS-R with green stripes, which you can get in US vs. Japan, it's so hard to get, the confusing thing is modified Viper is lighter and more powerful than Viper racecar, da hell Polyphony? In the same event black FTO LM also kinda hard to get., that car is a beast.
The most mind blowing thing in original GT is Gran Turismo Hi-Fi mode, it gives you 60 fps gameplay, sure they get rid of some buildings and you can see out-of-bound environment but still... 60 fps in original PS
Finished this game back in the day. it was the best racing game at the time
The license in Gran Turismo teaches you how to do things in the game and get use to it.
I love this dudes vids. Everyone of em holds my attention from start to end.
Sweet Christ this game made me so happy to have a PlayStation instead of a Saturn! Racing the night time city track with "High" playing in the background still gives me goosebumps!

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
I know this video is deprecated and all, but it's true, career mode is what made GT so awesome. And what did they do? They watered it all down...
i was a fan of the music in this 1st installment. everything about the game was amazing to me at a tender 9 years old, brought me into the racing world and after this i would be trying to find the next big racing game to get my hands on...good times...
I remember buying dodge viper as first car it cost me replaying same event over a week to afford it but man when i hit the gaz i forgot everything
Loved this game! I wanted to win on every track, with every car in every color. I was a naive madman back then, but it was fun. The handling and layout, music etc is amazing!
Sony practically invented the Dual shock for this game. Fantastic game that aged badly:(
Beat the game and get the HD(sort of) graphics
There was an anolog controller b4, but for GT they developed the DualShock. Those memories... Priceless. :)
Aged badly? Not at all! Try playing a FPS from the PS1 and it's damn hard to get used to the very outdated mechanics.
With this, you can easily start the game and race without many problems.
At around 4:50
How is using that driving setting "old school"??
That's the modern one from PS3 onwards!
The original driving setting isn't that one...
but X, BOX, CIRCLE etc...
Nice review though! ✌
i remember in 98 when this came out.. i wanted a racing game and i knew need for speed 3 and gran turismo were coming.. i didn't know which one to get.. this was before the internet had a ton of video game information, so i was waiting for my copy of egm in the mail.. well it came and it only had the review for need for speed 3.. i think they gave it 8.5.. and i had no idea what gran turismo would score and i was tired of waiting so i bought need for speed 3.. then the next issue came and gran turismo had 10s lol.. i was so upset.. need for speed 3 was lame to me.. i didn't even think it deserved the 8.5.. so i never got gran turismo cuz i started saving for a dreamcast not too long after
dreamcast....your childhood was full of poor choices
referral madness A really good choice tbh.
the saddest story I’ve read this week
I recently downloaded gt2 on my 6s with the psx. So many cars so much racing the early gts were ahead of their time for sure
Great review. Love your accent! Subscribed.
Funny how he mentions tracks in reverse and steep curves. When he was going on about tracks with trees, rocks and such I just remembered all the old Motorsport tracks from the early years before the cold war safety standards started shutting many down.
I prefer 1 over 2 for the sound track. ... that sweet pumping sound track.
GT is not just the best simulator or the best racing game. It is the best game ever. Period.
No.
If this game came out in 1997 and it took five years to develop, that means that development started in 1992, one year before even Daytona USA was released in Japanese arcades. And since the idea of the Playstation wasn't even conceived by Sony yet, it just makes me wonder what system it was originally planned for. In my opinion, I see 4 possibilities: Arcade, PC, 3DO, and Atari Jaguar. even then, it's still possible that throughout development they could have planned versions for the SNES with the Super FX chip, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64.
GT was better then GT2 hands down because of 1 thing only but an important one.
Car gear ratio setting, where in GT2 was rushed and unfinished, in GT1 it was well polished and allowed the player to get the gears exactly right to his play-style.
In GT2 it is possible but incredibly tedious because it does not show you a visual representation of what you are doing, how will the other gears be effected.
This forces you to constantly move the auto setup feature according to the track you are about to play, which is tedious and frustrating.
In the end just makes you choose another car which is a better all-rounder to just avoid that part.
GT2 essentially ruined the fun out of having your own personalized settings to compete with your friends with.
Which is what made GT1 a masterpiece in it's time.
I have to say they didn't really think of damage detail but focused on racing. Plus they were heavy inspired by BMO.
The fact, if its true that there were 7 people making this game is amazing.

“Imagine a tarmac road with such a steep angle.” Have you heard of Daytona International Raceway or Talladega Raceway?
Edit: Bristol Motor Speedway and Dover Raceway also have very steep bankings.
There is an old abandoned autodrome in Spain or one of those EU countries that has near vertical bankings. The old Top Gear trio once visited it, so yes.. the bankings on the classic Test Course is absolutely within the realm of reality.
The later Special Stage Route X also features very steep bankings, and it looks to be based on the real life VW Test track in Ehra-Lessien, Germany - However, the track featured in Gran Turismo is longer than the real life counterpart, being 10 km per side (compared to 8.7 km for the real track)
@@Skarfar90
SSRX is an insane track, it's so long. And yeah, banked corners were used for those test tracks. Allows drivers to keep going fast while keeping the track within a space.
Nice review, helps a lot to my GT1 Series! ;)
Legendary game in a legendary series. Best driving game series of all time for me, due to the the sheer depth and breadth of the cars featured in it, and the competent mechanics behind it.
Jebush, 5 years to develop? That's kind of uncommon to heard of for a video game of the time.
You need more likes.. Awesome reviews dude!
i recognize that this is an old version of the review, and im only really watching this bc i added all your racing reviews to my sleep queue for the night (i find your voice really relaxing ngl, i hope that isn't weird) but i wanted to throw my two cents in on controls. triggers for gas and brake and left stick for steering is definitely a fun time, but i prefer, and highly recommend, regardless of what platform you're playing on: right stick for gas and brake, left stick for steering, triggers for shifting gears. my favourite way to play any GT game since ive never actually owned a racing wheel.
which reminds me, side note, i really wanna try GT2 in DuckStation with a wheel sometime. idk if the emulator has wheel support, but if it ever does come in an update and I get a wheel, i'm totally rocking GT2 with that shit.
Wow, I never realized how different the PAL menu is from the NTSC menu.
I like the license tests
Several sim styled games did make it too the N64, sometimes with licensed cars debadged under different names. World Driver Championship is the most prominent one that comes to mind. GT 64 and Roadsters are two more examples, but are more arcade styled there.
And yes, I think that Star Wars Episode 1 Racer is a sim to an extent.
Ps1 was released in 1993 as far as i know.
Great video.
This was the first game I ever brought back in 98 when I had a ps1
The best sound track in the series. Always getting a Honda Civic as my first car and blazing the competition with my favorite track in the game. Pam..pam..pam..pam,........pam. pam.... Pam.... Pam...pa. pa. Pa. Pa.
I'm pretty sure this game doesn't have rubber banding like you said. I managed to leave other racers behind in a few events, and not just endurances. Maybe this differs depending on the region? (I played the US version)
It 100% does have rubberbanding, in all regions. It's a well known issue. It's mostly on earlier races.
6:06 must 100% agree.
In the original japanese version, the arcade mode didnt have those huge jumps and cars were not speeded up.
Why its not available? Licensing
The License Tests are so rewarding.
I started playing Gran Tourismo3 when I was 7 on the ps2.
GT Awesome! They need to emulate it to make it HDR and wider field of view widescreen, Remastered GT1,GT2,GT3 and GT4 is what they need to do in HDR, a disc with the collection of all 4 GT games Remastered in 1080p full 60FPS with 120HERZ option, HDR, and Widescreen mode in it only with widescreen, so it comes in Widescreen mode only
GOD, love this game so much!!!!! CLASSIC!!!!!!
8:01: please, pay attention to the yellow FTO in the image...
The Street Fighter II of the simulation car games.
Are you sure about the rubberbanding? I remember lapping my opponents on early levels when I had an upgraded car.
*Midnight Club* had catch up what with *teleporting AI* and *infinite nitrous* and *all seeing cops* ...
in this game you need to know the rules of _'slow in, fast out'_ and Apex curves because trying to pass on a straight away only to get overtaken in the curves means you were doing something wrong.
over 290 cars counted with all body modifications i believe.
great reviewss on classic gaming
Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2 are the 2 reasons why I prefer PS1 more than Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn.
Same goes how Gran Turismo 3 & 4, Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2, Rallisport Challenge 1 & 2 and Forza Motorsport are the reasons to prefer PS2 and Original Xbox over Gamecube and Sega Dreamcast.
Just got this game after 20 years of playing it, I am going to beat the whole thing, loving the gameplay, graphics are horrible but the fun factor is very high, after this one I am jumping to the next granturismo games that way I can see how the graphics evolved and all that.
alot or real life tracks can be driven in reverse actually but i agree that they all should, basically gives you two tracks in one
Back in the day when X was accelerate and Square was break it was very hard to drive high powered rear wheel driver cars. Don't get me started on the handling of mid engined cars... In 2 player mode you can turn "car catch up" or rubberbanding off.
That intro gets me every time!!
Can you do a racing lagoon episode
I'm pretty sure you could change the default camera o the options
classic ps scheme is pretty good, I just use my thumb for x and [ ], tilting foward and backward quickly
I remember seeing Gran Turismo at a friends house. I got my mom to buy me a PS1 and the game for Xmas. I soon got GT2. Then had to get a PS2 for GT3 and 4. Then a PS3 for GT5 and 6. 6, 4 and 2 are my favorites. With 1, 3 and 5 being my least favorites. I don't have a PS4 so i have not played GT Sport yet.
Granturisimo was the game i bught with the console in Norway in 90s :)
Used : Mitsubishi 95 GTO Twinturbo. over 900hp 4WD
Used: Nissan 95 R33 Skyline GTR(Might be Vspec or V-Spec2) alsoe over 900hp and 4WD
Used Nissan 97 R33 Skyline GTR(Might be Vspec or V-Spec2) alsoe over 900hp and 4WD
but the skylines are alitle lighter in weight and easyer to drive hehe :D
I still got this for my PSX. That game is older than me
Good video but, the first game don’t have the Nissan Skyline R34 so wrong cover
I enjoyed the first Gran Turismo. I couldn't pass the second driving test, so I just kept re-racing the first level races. My Honda Civic was the best. I had half-million dollar cars, but they always lost it on corners. My Civic was always perfect.
You need A license to get te best car in the game ;)
The switching back to digital after every event drives me nuts. I don't understand why they never fixed it.
Little 10 year old me actually believed that real cars could be bought in GT mode.
great review !
You should do a gran turismo psp review
JP ost all the way but that would be why it isnt available right? Music licensing issues
Your channel is growing at an amazing rate. So promise me that when you get rich and famous you won't forget me :)
Yesterday he got like almost 10 subs. Nice channel. ^^
The soundtrack is absolutely brutal.
Fuckin banger!
I think the main reason it's not on psn is the music licensing.
I remember I had a Russian copy back in the day when I didn't speak Russian that well. I couldn't figure out how to buy a car as Demio was >10k and I didn't have enough money.
One day I come back home to see my dad racing in a car I never saw in the shop. Turns out there were used cars... So my adventure began ;D
That Intro, that intro.
I never knew those tracks were fictional lol
