Luciano, you were absolutely correct in saying your last few sentences. "They thing that they are the ultimate judge...they think they have the right to applaud or boo, and if you want my opinion, they are right!" Bravo to my favorite tenor ever.

Can't agree with that. Booing is a metaphoric "F-- you" to the performer on stage. Why would you say "F--- you" to a performer for blowing a high note? As if it were done on purpose? Ridiculous!

@@MrCC379 Because their money went into the performers pockets for those high notes? It is as if you received bad products from Amazon, and you give a genuine, but bad review, how is that giving the seller "f-- you"? You paid for what you expect. Maruk Chozt Booing is a mild form of harassment! If you don’t like someone’s high note, then don’t applaud! And it not about the high note. It’s about the overall beauty of opera, period!!

He was 57 at the time. He could have been perfectly healthy and warm and this is a possibility at this age. His technique was very good, but he did put a lot of weight on his voice for years, so he didn't have the same longevity as Gedda or Kraus, who I think had better technique. Pavarotti had better technique when he was in his 30's than when he was in the prime of his career IMO.

If anybody thinks that the very greatest singers never crack in live performance they are much mistaken.I have even heard a soprano booed at the Paris Opera because she caught a bit of mucus on one single high note. Audiences can be totally unforgiving. That is why only those with nerves of steel can succeed and maintain a major operatic career - always exposed, only as good as your next performance.

what I see in the comments, saying the public doesn't know all the effort a tenor should go through, and that's why they got no right to boo him...
Get a grip. Of course audience is not supposed to know that, they should only care for the performance in that moment. Every singer knows there's the risk of failure, and booing, but real artists know the difference and good for not blinding by their own pride and recognize when doing wrong. I guess is what has got us with the "opera singers" we have nowadays. A mediocre sight on critics, instead of analyzing them throughly before disregarding them.

The modern day's oversensitive and egocentric "singers" and "musicians" (myself included) is something they all need to hear and remember once and forever.
Maestro shows his professionalism here when he defends in his last statement the people who booed him for one single mistake (voice crack). That maybe a harsh, but it's a test every musical performer/composer has to went through, because if the audience is booing, it's not their problems, but the performer's. If something went wrong, you have to work and improve to never let that happen again. Push your ego aside, analyze your performance to figure out what exactly went wrong and just evolve and improve your skills to never let that happen again.
I ironically like how the pop stars and the hucksters (if that makes sense) love showing off how much money they earned on selling their albums to shut up the audience who are booing them. The money is not a judge, it's the audience. The money doesn't go there to listen to your songs and your music, it's the Audience who brings them money, and the Audience has a right to judge. If the performer win they applaud, if the performer fails they boo. And if you try to shut them up and say that they know nothin they hate.
"Oh, I have 200 million dollars on my bank account!"
And you failed to find a vocal coach who can teach you how to sing live without autotune?

The people that feel they have the right to boo, are suffering from deep envy, so booing a great artist makes them feel better about themselves They are miserable people with many flaws. To avoid dealing with these flaws, they project their flaws onto someone else and then criticize that person. Better to criticize someone else than yourself. The great violinist Heifetz once said 99 percent of the people who go see him perform, go to see him make a mistake. Trust me, Pavarotti don't really mean when he says that these critics have the right to boo, he is being generous.

Educate yourself better about history Italian opera, which never was only about "listening to music". If people booed more often today, especially burger Americans, who have affected Europe with their horrible taste, we wouldn't have pseudo aritsts like Bartoli on stage.

@@liedersanger1 yes, I agree! His friend and director Magiera wrote his biography and he testified Pavarotti felt bad for his mistake, he didn't rehearse enough and forgot to take a breath in that moment. Of course it wasn't a big mistake (compared to nowadays singers it's nothing) but he was a perfectionist and in those times when a singer had even a tiny fault, the audience HAD to boo (same was for Freni in Traviata) so when Magiera was trying to minimise his error, Pavarotti said: "the audience is always right"

    • @Musettina6

@@fulvioarborio9578 Maestro Magiera was not there that night, nor during rehearsals in Milan .
Luciano felt bad during the intermission, but quickly overcame his initial reaction . He was a born fighter, always taking up a challenge and went on to sing the following performances without the slightest problem. This was in his nature.
But he always respected his audiences, which is clearly what his last sentence here also shows. He felt sorry for a moment for not being up to expectations that night, but saw that in the right perspective. A mistake can happen, just learn from it !
As for the loggionisti they had booed Callas, Freni and Pav himself before. That, after all, is their only claim to fame ...
