You have to realize this was 1980. Tracking devices would have been pretty rare as an everyday item and probably expensive. Anton was using a compressed air bolt gun used to kill cattle.

"Is no one hearing this?" It always make me smile when people don't realize how small towns in West Texas are. Yeah some places only have maybe 3 deputies and sheriff, that's it and they are usually out patrolling and one at the station.

I think the moments that were skipped - Josh Brolyn dying and his wife being killed - are omitted directorially for a reason. It’s to add to the sense that you can’t know everything, you can never be sure what’s around the corner, and you can take nothing for granted. And eventually death comes for everybody.

Not sure I completely agree, but you made the point well. Your idea certainly fits in with the theme. So I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that I’m unconvinced.
Previous to the scene where he checks his boots outside the house, he has a couple of violent encounters that feature him either taking off his boots or (in the scene with Woody Harrelson) lifting his boots before the blood reaches them. We don’t see this happen before the shootout with moss because we don’t see him at all, just his shadow.
It’s the friggin’ Coen Bros. 😆 They’ve gotten more subtle since Miller’s Crossing and the constant hat references, but they’re still doing the same things. This time it was boots.

Here the "good" guy is not actually the good guy,the bad guy wins, sheriff retires, and there is no glorious shootout ending.

Without consciously doing so, the movie's creators make CJ into a hero--even a Christ figure. She exposes Chigurh, calling him a liar and pointing out that all his murders are his choices. Chigurh believes he is a godlike personification of fate, an implacable and unstoppable force of nature. CJ strips him of this delusion, though she must sacrifice her life to do so. She reveals him to be--like the chigger his name resembles--a tiny, soulless parasite. The scene between them is the real showdown where the innocent hero takes on the villain and triumphs even in death. Chigurh leaves thinking he has won, but he is now stripped of the aura of invincibility and experiences the result in the car crash. When we last see him, he is as Satan is portrayed in the Bible--abroad and still dangerous, but a wounded, crippled foe whose days are all too obviously numbered - A popular youtube comment..

Although I wouldn't label CJ a Christ figure - her simple conscious grasp of humanity being that which we should aspire to, as a paragon - I do appreciate this overall take you've posted. Especially the part about the diminution of Chigurh's aura of power or even invincibility. It's a good summary.

    • @thomast8539
      @thomast8539 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Chigurh was already shown to be just as vulnerable as we all are when (A) he washed the blood from the cuts in his wrists after killing the cop and removing the handcuffs and (B) Llewelyn hit him with shotgun pellets that he later had to remove in that bathroom scene. So, he ain't fate, he ain't a ghost, he ain't satan, he ain't nothing but another savage killing people and getting paid for it. Don't make him out to be some mythical beast, because he is just a man. Just like the rest of us, he too, will eventually die.

@@thomast8539 Oh yes, agree with you there. But he kind of both is and he isn't in my eyes. No Country does have a slight tinge of nightmarish magical-realism about it, brought on simply by how unchained, inhuman, out of nowhere and terrifying Chigurh seems to be. You can enjoy it as a modern parable, but it does take place in the real world, and I think the level of horror and dread it conveys shows how unreal the real world can feel when you are pushed to its extremes.

I think what might shock some people is that people like this really do exist. I grew up around these people in west Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. My first real job was working cattle on the King Ranch when I was 11 years old and I can tell you for sure there are men just like Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) walking the hard baked soil of the American west. The people in the stores and hotel, and the guy with the chicken truck...took me right back home the first time I saw this movie. It's hard to really state how great this movie really is. Right on. I love West Texas and Big Bend, all that country between El Paso and Laredo. It’s beautiful. The people are kind to strangers in need. Balmorrea and Langtry are two small towns where people helped me when I was in need of shelter and assistance. Now, on the other side of the river, the country is also beautiful. I’ve driven through the lands just south of the Rio Grande, crossing at Del Río. But it’s spooky. I didn’t linger but kept driving south until I got to Matehuala just after dark.
You probably already know this, but if you drive down to Mexico, get an early start and drive south all day. Try to be at that day’s destination before it gets too dark. From Laredo you can make it to San Luis Potosí pretty easily in 8-10 hours. If you get a late start, call it a day when the sun goes down. Monterrey, Saltillo, and Matehuala are “safe” for Americans passing through for the most part.

Anton wasn't the only one hunting Llewellyn; the Mexican cartel was too. And thanks to CJ's mom, they found him first and killed him.

I'm literally a year late but Chigurrh (the killer) has a 12-gauge shotgun that presumably fires buckshot, 8-12 tiny lead balls. He blew the Mexican guy's arm mostly off because shotguns are savage at close range. The big silver can on the front is a suppressor (or silencer) so he doesn't alert the entire motel complex. This is not really a thing for shotguns but it's useful for the plot.

Llewellyn slipped up and got comfortable. The girl and the beer by the pool lead him to make the biggest mistake of his life. I would have liked to have seen another showdown with him and Chigurh. Maybe at his wife's mother's house. And yes he did kill her which was tragic because I think she was the only pure person in the whole movie. The gun Anton Chigurh (the bad guy) is using is a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun with an added suppressor (silencer). The suppressor heavily muffles the sound of the muzzle blast to reduce the chance of the shooter being detected. The reason why shotguns are so devastating, at least up close, is because they shoot several pellets of lead all at once and at close range its like getting shot multiple times in the same area.

The art of film has long been used to spread messages - both metaphorical and real - before you were even alive. Take an art history class or something. Even a simple google search could explain this to you. Either you are a child or a terribly sick adult. Get a hold of yourself.

I absolutely love that they don't show Llewellyn's death, only the aftermath. He let his guard dawn for just a few minutes with the lady at the pool and it cost him his life off screen. Truly the moral of this movie is that nothing matters and death is instant.

At some point, giving back the money is no longer a way out of the situation. That and adrenaline is a powerful defense mechanism for pain. While I was deployed in Iraq, I had to treat guys with all kinds of gruesome injuries that would have instantly put them on the ground were it not for every fiber of their being pushing them to survive.

The Coen Brothers never reward a character who makes a foolish choice, even if they make the audience like the character.
Josh Brolin shouldn’t have taken the money, and it cost him.
The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Burn After Reading; all the main characters who make a morally questionable choice get punished for it.

There have been some very interesting movies involving the Drug Cartels and the US Border in recent years (NCFOM captures a genuine feel of the American southwest). I would suggest reacting to "Sicario" from 2015 (It also has a sequel). The Coen Brothers remade the 1968 Charles Portis novel, "True Grit" in 2010. John Wayne starred in the classic 1969 movie adaptation (that would be an interesting reaction). Interestingly, it was pointed out in another comment that Carla Jean is played by Scottish actress Kelly Madonald and also Emily Blunt stars in "Sicario."

Nothing was skipped, the reason the Sherrif retired was he saw what was coming in the late 70s when this was set, the Mexica Drug Cartels. Thus the Drug Cartels got to Lewellen before Chigar could get to him. We saw them running away from the scene. They got their money and killed him. The Mexican guy helping his mother-in-law with her bags was a Cartel guy. The odd ending isn't really odd, its the sherrif saying, Hell woman, *Thi ain't No Country for Old Men [to be a sheriff in]*

On the subject of Llewelyn not checking for a tracker, the movie takes place in 1980, while something like that could exit in that time, it wouldn't be something someone would think of right away and most likely would be quite expensive

A lot of people get the dream thing at the end wrong. He's talking about a dream about his father who has gone ahead and is lighting the way and if he just goes to and stays with him all with be safe and good and right. "And then I woke up." That last line means the dream is, literally and figuratively, a fantasy and not real. He's fantasizing about being happy and safe and warm, but that's not reality. He then "woke up" and came back to the "cold reality" of the world and his circumstances.

Llewellyn was the sheriff's son, Chigurh did kill Carla Jean, once Llewellyn took the money he was dead - Chigurh was going to kill him regardless whether he gave the money back, and the gun was a shotgun, a type of hunting gun. Instead of shooting a single projectile - although they can fire large single "bullets" called slugs - they are more often loaded with shotshells filled with steel pellets of various sizes depending what kind of game you're hunting.
So yes, essentially shotguns fire a cloud of shrapnel that spreads out as it travels, making it fairly ineffective at a distance but brutally effective at close range.

Two funny factoids about this movie. The two actors (one male, one female) with the most country-sounding accents are actually from the UK. Garrett Dillahunt from England plays Tommy Lee Jones' slightly dim-witted Deputy, and Llewelyn's wife (the redhead) is played by Kelly MacDonald from Scotland.

You can indeed do that if you have handcuffs on, but it requires you to flexible and well practiced in it, and it helps to be double-jointed. Just as most grown men cant, say, do the splits perfectly, most grown men have no chance of pulling this off.

    • @Theomite

Not only would there never be a tracking device in drug money because why would there be, but putting it in the vent would block the signal given off by the tracker. Radio waves can't go through metal, Anton could walk within feet of it and not get a blip.

  • @MrSilentBill

You asked, why we weren't shown how Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) died. Well, earlier you wondered, how he would ever get out of this dangerous situation. Then after some tense scenes the movie just unceremoniously shows us that he didn't. What kind of message you interpret from this, if even one at all, is up to you.
For me it's just interesting and with a certain gravity to ponder, how sudden and for the victim almost impossible to discern a reason, death just arrives. And many couldn't even form a thought like "Well, shit." before it's over. In the end Anton Chigurh wasn't caught by the Sheriff or killed by some other important figure. He was just out of the blue struck by a car. That wasn't the end for him, but it almost was. Will he ponder this or will his psychopathy prevent it here again?
