Guilford/ST SW1 #1407 works the Newburyport Branch from Wakefield thru Lynnfield and Peabody to Danvers,MA on 04/02/1991. Video by Richard 'Moose' Ouellette. If you like our stuff, Please comment and/or subscribe!
I've never met this Richard "Moose" but if I've learned anything about him from these amazing videos of my childhood, it's that he was one FAST driver! He must have driven like a madman to hit all these spots one after another.
A lot of the crossings in that area were actually flagged by the head end brakeman, I think this vid is before the "Quiet Zone" BS started. I also disagree with the Quiet Zone laws. Craig
Yeah F those retarded laws I’ll say that straight up but yeah interesting video I like that old school guy driving that locomotive when the vid first starts
What a wonderful tribute for Moose! He had a real eye for capturing railroad history (particularly on threatened lines), and now the whole world can enjoy his vision. I'm getting homesick from these videos over my morning coffee, all the way down here in Georgia!

Yes you know your streets of this Branch !!! Moose and I went on many Trips together during this Guilford era, and since I was from Boston & Lynn I knew all the Branchlines around really well from Railfanning them with my Dad and Older Brother starting in the Mid 1970s. So I told Moose about the Wakefield and Salem switcher ops and Portsmouth/Hampton, NH so we went to film them before they were gone ! Moose (Richard) has passed away but the video history, memories & Pics remain.
These videos were taken when I was 12(I'm 34 now), never got the treat of seeing a train in Danvers, and these lines are all bike paths now, wow have times changed.
@VTSPQR The engine builder is EMD (Electro-motive) formerly a subsidiary of General Motors Corp. it was spun off several years ago and now is owned by Caterpillar! The model is an SW1...they were built in the late 30's and 40's, 600hp V6 567 series 2 stroke. Glad you like our vids, Craig
I'm just so grateful that this video even exists. I grew up on the North Shore in the 80's, and catching a train on the Newburyport Branch was such a treat. In fact, I actually lived in the Topsfield Depot for many years; it was heavily renovated and on South Main St. at the time (it's since been moved to Summer St.). I'd love to know more about Moose's life. Was he a railroad employee? I wonder what other gems he captured on video. I look forward to your updates. Great stuff!
I remember the Route 1 crossing! I wish I caught it in action! But it's exempt as of now! The crossing itself is very beat up and vandilezed and rusty! Lights are busted and broken! Too bad they made it exempt
Another great video from Richard thank you Craig for posting these. I wasn't born until 85 so seeing these videos Is a time capsule of what was before me.
Silly question here it goes who was that older schooler train driver at 0:26 does anybody who’s see this video knows who I’m talking he’s in some of senes here in this video as well, my opinion he seemed to have looked interesting way back then even though he didn’t really step out of the cab?
At least the crossing signals here work, unlike the M&L branch when they didn't. The crossings in this vid are less dangerous, they would be more safe if they blew the horn at them or if the crossing signals had gates.
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing these Gems. =) Just one question though: What is the make, and model of the Engine? My Grandfather was a Engineer on one that looked like that.
at 9:57 HEY! what this train doing on my bike path! Danverse train station in the background on the left side. This actually use to cross over the Eastern railroad in this view to Middleton which is another proposed bike path where the rails or ties don't exist anymore.
@@interstellarphred Rail trails are a great way to remember what they where once used for. Stations are restored as museums and not just rotting away. I was hoping to see a restoration of the last Danverse station of five, but havent seen an anything yet. This line is only leased for 99 years. Who knows if people get lazy enough to not use bikes as transportation in the future there may be a train to take them to where they want to once again quickly with modern equipment. The connecting Middleton line to Andover is one of the oldest in the area and is now a bike path as well. Development is also happening on the Peabody line just behind the North Shore mall on the other side on 128.
Charles Schutz The Essex Branch is not a rail trail. The Newburyport branch is. Part of the Newburyport branch was turned into a rail trail and the Essex branch is abandoned but not a rail trail. MBTA still owns the property.
Great video, so much of the Danvers part has changed in really not along part of time.

It seems to me that this would have made a great commuter rail line with stations at route 128 and at route 1.
1:00 stopping for an omelette at the omelette headquarters :P

I love watching switchers in the industrial areas, especially on tracks that are hardly ever used . I don't know why
The crossbucks on rt 1 are still there as well as the red signals as of september 2023

Lovely video as always and a clean black Chevy truck tho!
I remember the trains crossing rt1 when I was a young child.

It is exempt since both lines up to the crossing have been made into rail trails. No more trains on that line.

Those crossings are exempt as of today
Those crossings don't exist as of today.
have enjoyed your work, haven't been around there, so thanks for the tour
beautydogg My pleasure, Glad you like the vids. Craig
I don’t hear any horns blowing.

that old engine is a beauty
Nothing was a so called beauty in Guilford paint.
@tdluvs Not sure...most xings are being flagged and maybe some of the towns had a no whistle ordinance, Craig
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing these Gems. =)

Don't let her fool ya, she may look small, but next to here a Peterbuilt is a LeCar!
Brian, I got one coming thats a High & Wide move on THE branch!, Craig
My favorite guilford engine! Do you know where this went after Guilford?
It might be one of the ones the Milford and Bennington has. Ones in use and one I think is still in guilford paint

What is your bike path doing on the railway line? should not be there.

This is fantastic! Where were those LPG tank cars going? Who was the customer?
Idk, but I think they're coming from Eastern Oil on Water St. in Danvers
Great video. Can you explain why they are not blowing for grade crossings?
All the lines show in the video have long been abandoned and turned into rail trails.
