Great video! Thanks for sharing. We just moved to Amsterdam last week from the states and were really surprised by how chill people are in a lot of ways but mainly in how they dress! It seems like people are more casual than in other parts of Europe, which is nice. Athletic clothes and shorts are common here which I was not expecting!

Only the president goes biking in his 2000 dollar armani suit, the rest just wears jeans because that's practical. We love practicality ;) can you emagine 10 inch heels with three kids on a bike? lol.

At 5:30 I literally was saying "Bless their heart" in my head before you said it! I always think fireworks! These are all true! The dressing comfortable and what they wear! HAHA!! That is the one I LOVE the best! 💖 Brilliant video! I have learned the habit of relaxing in the park on a sunny day and leaving the electronics behind! PLaying some kubb!
Another piece of advice: keep using fresh food only. It is more healthy. Don't ever compare yourself to anyone else. You have your own value in your personality, don't try to keep up with the Joneses.
I am a Brit who was in A'dam for 35 years and now 3 years in Belgium. At this point I think the government and authorities in NL are quite high on the international scale. I.e. most departments seem to get their computers to find you and you usually get the form or call back (etc.) that you need. The rules are clearer (stricter?) and more equally applied than in most countries. Yes, of course there are many exceptions and contradictions ('kinderbijslag') but on the whole I'd rather deal with Dutch admin than any others I've known! ( Belgium/UK/Spain)
I guess you could see directness vs passive agressiveness as such; being passive agressive creates a toxic atmosphere, while being direct can be like thunder, it might give you a scare or shock you but then the air is cleared.
Roland Boerhof they just ignored all the traffic needs, big roids in the 1980 ish years, so they never did anything. They only do Arabic and Russian Mafia energy in Amsterdam, pollution. Only the Weesperstraat, Ytunnel, rest is local roads, so traffic is a hell, just no access or hardly any access, bikes only. If you think that's good, then you understand the system. If you have this many bikes, kick the mopads out, and keep the streets for local cars only, you can work this out. We need to do this ourselves, fix all energy needs here, be more independent from Germany and Thehauque.
@@lucasrem if half the people moving about in amsterdam were in a car, the cars would have to be stacked 10 stories high. These old historic towns are bikes and public transport. There are roads for deliveries and old or disabled people, or when you want to go on a holiday (like skying in Switzerland or the beach in France). They are not there for you to do grocery shoppings or go to work. It doesn't fit, because of population density. The other 99% of the netherlands is not old historic towns, but suburbia. I do agree that non local cars should be banned altogether. But we still can't afford for healthy people to use a car instead of a bike for a 10 minute supermarket trip. Its just too many people. And the more cars, the worse the air and the general atmosphere, so less people will want to be outside, driving even more people into a car.

Funny, We all did jobs in germany, working there, pünktlich und gründlich, we all call German offices concentration Camps! Amsterdam: 'Scheit aan alles!' nobody lives there, so everybody is trashing it. If you go outside the center, it's the Westbank, 'Wir schaffen das nicht'

True. I believe it has to do with the company health insurance. This is nothing like a health plan, but rather similar to your own health insurance in NL. If you get sick or ill, you are insured for that. Similarly, a company will insure itself against medical issues (including mental ones) which are a direct result of work or an accident that happend as a result of your work. If a person gets overworked and they haven't taken at least 2 weeks off, I believe the company can't use their insurance. I believe it's something like that.
Vacation days are for working people to stay healthy. That’s why the law states that you get a minimum of 20 days a year and your collective labor agreement (CAO) can add days to that amount. A healthy employee is a more productive employee. A collective labor agreement is a contract between (employee) unions and employers in your respective profession. I work in construction and it has a different CAO than other professions. And I like it that in our country every employer needs to have a sound pension plan for their employees. Those funds are often also limited to your own profession, so I pay my pension premiums to a pension fund of the construction profession. Almost all construction companies are connected to that pension fund. And the good part is that employers don’t own that pension fund, they only pay premiums to it for their employees. Those amount of premiums, that employers and employees pay, are also negotiated as part of the CAO.
Thank you for sharing all of that! Yes the pension plans are very nice as well. Can't believe I forgot about it! And since the company I worked for and who my husband works for now all gave over the minimum, I still expect 25 days 🤣. Then I would buy 5 more! But even to know you'll get 20 is huge to me. I agree about being healthy and being a better employee. My colleagues and I understood that mental health days are needed to. And when you needed a sick day, you took it. In the US, sometime you had sick days given to you per year (I think I had 3) and sometimes you didn't and you just didn't get paid. I don't know the general law in NL, but at least my company had a nice policy for that.

The days/hours you bought back will be settled every month in your salary after you took the days/hours off. It is obvious that those days/hours are the last you use, because if you don’t use them, you have a higher salary. The short absence days are for doctor, dentist, physiotherapist or hospital visits/appointments or sick leave. The senior days I got when I reached the age of 58, last year.

It was a very very busy year in construction last year. Because so many businesses and shops were forced to close, because of covid, they use the time to rebuild, remodel and rearrange their buildings. All to minimize the disruption for users and travellers. And there was already a shortage of personnel in construction. Allow me to advertise for my profession. So if you have technical skills, please come and work in construction, on the building site itself or in the office, like me. Look at the benefits, a very good CAO Bouw & Infra (collective labor agreement) and a very good BPF Bouw (pension fund). I’m not working in housing construction, but they are also very very busy. And they also have the same CAO and pension fund.

Perhaps now that's the case. But 10 years ago there was a specific area you couldn't cycle on, and I think it had something to do with the courthouse and jail being there. But it was a smallish city of 40,000 and not many people used the sidewalk in most of the town, so i guess it wasn't an issue is most places.
Three kisses? It depends a bit on with whom you are and where you are. Where I live it's done only between (mostly young) people who know each other very well. Don't expect all people to appreciate it.

Yes, We were told people dressed casual when we arrived in Amsterdam, but don't think some international locals appreciate it if you dress in shorts as we were yelled at (not in dutch) and also a nephew had same when he took his shirt off (it was a hot day). So be careful you don't upset more conservative people from other cultures. We also did notice heavily armed vehicle with armed police when we were there driving past Amsterdam square. We noticed this a few times...similar to what we saw in Paris, France. Police or army are more armed.
We rarely wear shorts but also, it rarely gets hot enough to do so. I'll stick with dresses and shorts underneath, instead. I wouldn't want worry about offending people by how you dress, though. It's a very liberal and tolerate city and we are used to people being dressed in the craziest things you can imagine...or nothing at all. The city "celebrates" naked bike day 😂 I believe I know the police vehicle you mean, but it doesn't come out too often. Something specific may have been happening when you were here, ir the king may have been in town. Relationships here with police are VERY different than in the US ( i don't know where you're from, but just using that as a reference point). We have police in vans, cars, scooters, bikes, and horses. I think we even have a Ferrari for the highways. They go to school for ages and are usually in pairs. People aren't scared of them in the way like you see police and you get nervous that they are after you.
Ah yes the joys of diversity, the price of the endless influx of regressive cultures. I would not go to Amsterdam and Rotterdam, those cities are not dutch.
Those are definitely good habits to have in the Netherlands! It's interesting how the Dutch seem to be less judgmental when it comes to what people wear compared to people here in the US. Anytime I've either been to gatherings or have hosted them, I always feel that the host usually isn't the one who asks everyone to leave even in an indirect way. It seems that it is when the guests feel like that they should start heading out. I enjoyed this one!
Well honestly, we tend to have a little gigle aswell. When we see 'what people wear at walmart' videos. We would never directly tell them, but secretly gigle about it yes!
in the netherlands, working people need rest from time to time. so it is law that people have a right to x amount of hours of vacation. for overal health reasons. your boss/work can't touch those vacation days and they have to "by law" deliver and pay for those day's is salary. you also like the yearly vacation money? :)
Yes, it's so nice for employees to be treated as people! And I don't get the vacation money anymore since I work for myself 😭 But I used to! My employer started putting it in each month's paycheck which made me a bit sad, though.
I'd go as far to say that it doesn't work for most. But even when I had good insurance compared to most, I was paying a lot for the ER or a specialist visit.

So what was free before is now 200 euro a month,.. and no prostests! So sneaky. And of course most people are just satisfied enough with their smartphone,.. for now. Sorry for drifting of,. One more thing, the directness,.. that is a fenomen of the cold areas,. this stops in italy and half way france, nobody know why :-) Here in Montpllier its the same. When I am too direct here people get scared or something. So I learned how to turn around the question for hours before coming to the point. Except for with true friends of cours. The directness is culture in the west of the country, don't be that direct when you are in the more civilized parts of the country...we here in the east are way more subtile, and the south is different again.. Friesland is yet an other story..
I'm a Southern girl here. The female passive aggressiveness came from getting what you needed because being direct would come with aggressive behavior because we didn't have any rights to earn a living unless it was inherited. I could go on but I'll stop. I'm direct so life in the South has always been a struggle. 😂😂😂I don't care. Amsterdam sounds lovely. The biking would be hard but you have mass transport so that is great. Regarding the mass transit, how do tourist get a card? Is it different for them?

The many vacation days you get in the Netherlands is a product of the social attitude of former generations and is, like your earning one day a month in the US, part of the salary of the workers. In a time with high unemployment especially of young people, the Worker Unions traded money for free days in the yearly negotiations with the Employers. This is part of the Dutch tradition of "polderen": we do some things collective if needed, like with the "Waterschappen"en the polders. So the free days are payed for by a lower salary.
That's really interesting! A lot of work related things are done differently. More of which I appreciate here. In the US, contracts aren't the norm and I lived in a "right to work" state. While I don't understand the specifics, most of the time you can be fired for almost anything and without notice (please, someone correct me if I'm wrong). And the fact that the NL requires vacation days as part of work is huge because that's not a thing in the US at all. Not all is mandatory holidays a thing, it's looked down upon many times if you take days you earn. I know it's all cultural, I just like the way it is here 😊 Although I work for myself now and don't give many vacation days 🤣
Expatriates are work/company related and mostly, short term with either dates for return and in possession of a home address. Come to a country of your own accord not company related your a work immigrant. Come here to live, immigrant! I am Australian by the way, and lived in Amsterdam for 32 years. Recently moved to the Limburg area. I have seen the demise of Amsterdam from a mainly Amsterdam/Dutch society to its current foreign infested International society! Amsterdam stopped being Amsterdam 20 years ago!
Expat is someone who leaves: expatriate Immigrant is someone who intends to stay. While we assume other definitions, these are actually in the dictionary when I looked them up.

Yes, We were told people dressed casual when we arrived in Amsterdam, but don't think some international locals appreciate it if you dress in shorts as we were yelled at (not in dutch) and also a nephew had same when he took his shirt off (it was a hot day). So be careful you don't upset more conservative people from other cultures. We also did notice heavily armed vehicle with armed police when we were there driving past Amsterdam square. We noticed this a few times...similar to what we saw in Paris, France. Police or army are more armed.
We rarely wear shorts but also, it rarely gets hot enough to do so. I'll stick with dresses and shorts underneath, instead. I wouldn't want worry about offending people by how you dress, though. It's a very liberal and tolerate city and we are used to people being dressed in the craziest things you can imagine...or nothing at all. The city "celebrates" naked bike day 😂
I believe I know the police vehicle you mean, but it doesn't come out too often. Something specific may have been happening when you were here, ir the king may have been in town. Relationships here with police are VERY different than in the US ( i don't know where you're from, but just using that as a reference point). We have police in vans, cars, scooters, bikes, and horses. I think we even have a Ferrari for the highways. They go to school for ages and are usually in pairs. People aren't scared of them in the way like you see police and you get nervous that they are after you.
Ah yes the joys of diversity, the price of the endless influx of regressive cultures. I would not go to Amsterdam and Rotterdam, those cities are not dutch.
Those are definitely good habits to have in the Netherlands! It's interesting how the Dutch seem to be less judgmental when it comes to what people wear compared to people here in the US. Anytime I've either been to gatherings or have hosted them, I always feel that the host usually isn't the one who asks everyone to leave even in an indirect way. It seems that it is when the guests feel like that they should start heading out. I enjoyed this one!

Well honestly, we tend to have a little gigle aswell. When we see 'what people wear at walmart' videos. We would never directly tell them, but secretly gigle about it yes!
in the netherlands, working people need rest from time to time. so it is law that people have a right to x amount of hours of vacation. for overal health reasons. your boss/work can't touch those vacation days and they have to "by law" deliver and pay for those day's is salary.

Yes, it's so nice for employees to be treated as people! And I don't get the vacation money anymore since I work for myself 😭 But I used to! My employer started putting it in each month's paycheck which made me a bit sad, though.

I think US have a decent healthcare system if you have very good insurance plan. But obviously this doesn't work for everyone.
I'd go as far to say that it doesn't work for most. But even when I had good insurance compared to most, I was paying a lot for the ER or a specialist visit.

Unforunately since more then 20 years now,.. the 'americanisation' (hardcore kapitalism) is kicking in harder and harder in europe. What started by the privatisation of Tatcher and her buddy Reagan. Now Rutte, the president of Holland, pushed sneakely through more and more of this system. In a free market only the rich are winners. So what was free before is now 200 euro a month,.. and no prostests! So sneaky. And of course most people are just satisfied enough with their smartphone,.. for now.

The directness is culture in the west of the country, don't be that direct when you are in the more civilized parts of the country...we here in the east are way more subtile, and the south is different again.. Friesland is yet an other story..

I was born in Amsterdam, but mostly raised in Friesland. There are differences, yes, but they are not as big as they are made out to be.
I'm a Southern girl here. The female passive aggressiveness came from getting what you needed because being direct would come with aggressive behavior because we didn't have any rights to earn a living unless it was inherited. I could go on but I'll stop. I'm direct so life in the South has always been a struggle. 😂😂😂I don't care.

The many vacation days you get in the Netherlands is a product of the social attitude of former generations and is, like your earning one day a month in the US, part of the salary of the workers. In a time with high unemployment especially of young people, the Worker Unions traded money for free days in the yearly negotiations with the Employers. This is part of the Dutch tradition of "polderen": we do some things collective if needed, like with the "Waterschappen"en the polders. So the free days are payed for by a lower salary.
That's really interesting! A lot of work related things are done differently. More of which I appreciate here. In the US, contracts aren't the norm and I lived in a "right to work" state. While I don't understand the specifics, most of the time you can be fired for almost anything and without notice (please, someone correct me if I'm wrong). And the fact that the NL requires vacation days as part of work is huge because that's not a thing in the US at all. Not all is mandatory holidays a thing, it's looked down upon many times if you take days you earn. I know it's all cultural, I just like the way it is here 😊 Although I work for myself now and don't give many vacation days 🤣
