    In this video, I decided I take a look at Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors. These are pretty valuable when it comes to scrapping. Almost $4 an ounce on eBay. I've been lucky because I've had a good supply of these with the type of items I deal with.

      Luke Ketelhut You're welcome and you could make good money from this stuff. Eventually you could make a business out of this but that's not easy to do being a full time recycler with a warehouse and employees

      Champlainscrap i've been sitin around for a while with these empty boards with the capacitors on them thinking about throwing them away and now i find out what they are and that they have decent value. thanks great vid look forward to more.

    are the tiny black one's that look the same the same thing or just the brown/yellow ones

    • @larrycraig6403
      @larrycraig6403 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are the brown ones only, kind of a chocolate color. They also have a "c" for capacitor followed by a number on a printed circuit board and once you do a few you will spot them easily.

    Will hydrochloric acid dissolve palladium? You can use it to dissolve the solder from the boards and just have the components fall off.

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      from the little information I have seen you should be able to but personally I don't like to use acid for anything. I stay away from it. Assem Yahia from a post bellow knows how to get the palladium out. You should contact him and see if he could help you out.

      Champlainscrap The idea of azatropic distillation of hydrochloric acid doesn't bother me so I'm not likely to be able to relate to someone who is intimidated by simple extraction use of hydrochloric. Put on some gloves, glasses, apron and a mask or use a fume hood. It's just pool acid for gods sake, industrialized society uses this stuff all the time in thousands of processes. It's positively common,
      I'm not interested in dissolving the palladium with hydrochloric, I was casually checking if it, like silver, does not dissolve in hydrochloric.
      The hydrochloric would dissolve the tin in the solder and convert it to its tin chloride salt, allowing for the hundreds of small parts to fall off with little work, including all of those tiny monolithic ceramic capacitors, which you could likely isolate most of them through size classification, magnetic eddy currents, chemical extraction, etc. You could then electrowin the tin chloride solution to recover the tin.
      Assem is likely relying on manual labour to collect them, whereas I am interested in an industrial process to clear hundreds of boards at a time. It'll never be worth my time to manually remove the things, that stuff is penny wise, pound foolish.

      Brady Rose It's not really an intimidation issue but more of a safety issue in regards to my family and home . I don't want to fiddle around with any type of acid in my home which is were I do my scrapping. I have to say that based on your reply that you must have a lot of experience when it comes to scrapping and probably a lot more than I do. I thank you for your informative post and also the length of it. Hope other share the way you have in the future. It helps us all learn.

      I would question the accuracy of Assem's claim. You say that there is almost an ounce of MLCC's in an Xbox 360. If those were 50% palladium as he claims, then there would be $400 dollars worth of palladium in a machine that sold for $300 when it was first produced. Microsoft is many things, but stupid is not one of them, and they would have gone belly up very quickly if they were that bad at math.

    What about using a multi tool to pry them off? Interesting idea.

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I used when I started to remove them but I would lose all the tiny ones that you can't get with a multi-tool. That's why why i switched to a chisel.

    how do i identify them on a board. is ther markings on them or the board. i have looked at the boards i have and truthfully the stuff starts looking the same. thanks for the video and good luck to you and your own

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +paul m . I haven't noticed any markings for them but they always look like what you see in the video. Brown with silver stripes I guess on each side. Supposedly the silver stripes on the side is actual silver so these are also good for silver extraction if that is something you do.

      On a printed circuit board you will see the letter "c" followed by a number usually but the main thing is they have that letter before them.

    where do you sell these?

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really only sell them on eBay but I'm sure you could find no-eBay places to sell them. Outside of eBay, your best bet is through a scrap message board. If you google it you'll fall on one. I found a good one recently. I don't remember the site name but I " tantalum prices"

    none of the Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors I see on ebay looks like the ones you have in the video. just see is what appears to be tant capacitors, the yellow ones.

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      for the precious metals found in them. I think the market has gone up since I made this video. There is a good amount of buyers on eBay

  • @rustybaumbarger9224
    @rustybaumbarger9224 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damn you are telling me that you get about the same amount for the mlcc"s that come off one motherboard are worth about the same as what you would get for the motherboard

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Up until today, I hadn't check what they sell for a few years. I just checked now and someone sold 2 oz. for $20 on eBay. I guess the value has gone up again. Towards the end, I wasn't selling them for that much but it looks like the market is up. So yes there is a chance you could get so much that it would be worth more than the motherboard

    You never mentioned why they are worth the money.

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well at the time they were worth about 4 to 5 dollars per ounce. People wanted the palladium found in them mostly but as of right now the value I don't think is as much. I also can't say that definitively because it's been over a year since I've sold any.

    4 to 5 dollars per ounce ?????are you kidding ?

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope not kidding at all. A few months ago I sold about 16 oz. for $71. Some get up to $8 through contacts they have made.

    • @AssemYahiaTV
      @AssemYahiaTV 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Champlainscrap Man !!!!! this is not the real price ,50% of the total Weight of these ceramic capacitors is palladium , and if u checked the last price of palladium , it should be around 800 USD per ounce , so calculate it , so the ounce of the ceramic capacitors should be around 400 USD

    • @champlainscrap6076
      @champlainscrap6076  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't look at it like that. No one will pay you $400 per ounce for these. If they were 100% palladium then you could ask for whatever price you want but you need to be able to and know how to process these to get the palladium out.
      It's just like getting the gold out from pins and connectors. If you could do it then you could buy these for $8 an ounce, do all the work to get the palladium out and make $800 an ounce which would be amazing. I wish I could do it.
