One if the most hype 64 sets I've seen. That Falcon Kick combo at the end was PogChamp.

why is this game so fast and fun to watch? 1 stock in smash 4 takes half an hour. meanwhile its 3 seconds in smash 64
In this has specific matchup in 64, on paper, one touch should be death for either character
Because this is the ONE TRUE SMASH. It's what God intended.
But 64 has so much jumping around and avoiding the opponent.
Either way, SSBU matches are the most exciting.

was there anything keeping them from taking a stock trade when the other player was ledge stalling, or did they just never ledge stall when at a stock disadvantage/percent advantage? idea occurred to me pretty late into the set and i can't rewatch a 40-minute set rn

I’ve noticed a pretty huge difference between the 64 and the melee commentators: in melee tournaments, the commentators never focus on one player, they rarely make their personal hoped-for outcome known to the audience, they’re almost professionally unbiased, recognizing that every player skilled enough to be there deserves a chance to be in the spotlight and flourish their own unique brand of charisma so as to charm the audience into rooting for them. But smash commentators, somewhat obnoxiously and very overtly, play favorites. Prince, Boom, and Firo are just a few of the players I notice this happens with. The commentators almost stop acting as though the match is between two human beings and act instead like it’s their favorite player against some disembodied force. It kind of reminds me of when kids would get really into a show or a game in grade school and for the next month, everything was about Naruto or Star Fox. Fan-boying. It’s not very dignified for commentators to do that.

At the same time, Alvin was camping Boom out so why wouldn't you root for him

Pikachu can be really fun to watch too. But yeah, a campy Pikachu by a player of Alvin's caliber is deadly, but not that fun to watch by itself. Boom's Falcon though who has a mix of being flashy, careful, deadly, stylish, and sometimes unorthodox is what makes his Falcon so damn fun to watch. The fact that there's a level of rivalry between Alvin and Boom helps with the intensity and fun of the match, but yeah, a good portion of the enjoyment from these games comes from Boom's Falcon.
Boring set. Super campy and non interactive. Never watched SSB at a high level and I'll stick to Melee.
You know I’ve been watching a bunch of these and noticed a couple things. I really hate edge hogs, people who clearly have a character like Kirby or Pikachu who have enough jumps they can come back on stage easy. Especially when matched up like a character who have captain falcon who clearly has limited jumps. I just hate watching them throw them off once or twice and then edge hog, and that’s how they win the whole set, when clearly the opponent who has to combo and smack them up around %100 plus is the better player.
The combos are so easy to start and complete as falcon that it can be just as easy, and sometimes easier for Falcon to Zero to Death pikachu than for pika to gimp him. Falcon is incredibly strong at low % while Pika is easy to combo at almost any %.

Alvin playing the best character and also playing a camping strategy made me automatically root for Boom.
It's pretty clear there's a level of competition between these two Boom and Alvin and they aren't necessarily friendly (though I don't think they hate one another). To the other, they really are "that" guy to each other. They both were so hyped when they beat the other in Genesis 4 and 5 I believe.
Boom was the underdog at the time as well.

As a Capt. Falcon main in Smash 64, this guy is my hero.
That Falcon Kick completely bamboozled Alvin, he wasn't even close to teching it. Boom showed his amazing mental game several times in this fight.
I've never watched this set before but I'm glad Boom won. Partly because I was a Falcon main back when I played this game as a kid but mostly because it was annoying to watch Alvin camping the ledge nearly the entire first set. I know it's strategy and all but man is it lame to watch. Pikachu gets one grab on Falcon, throws him off the ledge, and that's all it takes to kill. pfft.
I used to think i was amazing at this game back in the day. I'm 36 years old. But GEEZ these kids would literally destroy me at this game now and then ...
Holy shit he kept falcon kicking down on the middle platform and commentary was like why is he doing that? Then at the end - although different context he falcon kicks pikachus head off and gets the up B finish. Amazing

Coach Isai to the rescue
Boom was nervous. He was trying not to show it but you could tell. Alvin however, was stone cold. I love to watch this game being played, and this was it on the highest level. Congrats to both players.

Depends. You could argue for a few (very small amount) of people right now. Alvin is up there himself but he isn't #1.
