  • In this video I swing by Andy's shop as he is replacing all eight drive tires on his Peterbilt. He gives us a demonstration on how to change the tires by hand and shows us a torque wrench that goes up to 600ft lbs! Not to mention that the tires on this truck cost about $700 EACH!
    -Enjoy!

    Sonny's Service of Avoca is awesome!
    I lost a main coolant hose on my 387 Pete and dropped out all the coolant, 12 miles west of their shop on 17 /86 west. Called Sonny's, and Doug came out with their service truck and had me rolling west in under 90 minutes from the time I called. And their bill was extremely reasonable to boot! Great and knowledge service. Must be a trait of this entire family!

    Eric, the white 'stuff' you saw inside the new tire is (probably) silicon or talcum powder put in to prevent the sticking of the 'bladder' tube inserted during tire curing when manufactured. The bladder keeps the tire pumped up and pressed into the mold giving the tire the lugs and sipes that you see on the outside. Love you guys. Cheers from north of the 49th parallel.

    • @scowell

      Mold release.

    • @caddyrack
      @caddyrack ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@scowell Exactly. The bladder is inflated inside the tire to push it into the mold, that's why they use it to release it from the mold. also when you repair a tire you need to buff and clean the area completely to remove the coating or the patch/plug will not vulcanize to it.

    • @caddyrack
      @caddyrack ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pitchforkpeasant6219 No problem, I know that because I toured the GoodYear tire factory and when the tire is made the tread is bold, they put the tire in the multi-segmented mold and the bladder inside is filled with air or an inert gas to press the tire from the inside into the mold. After 27 minutes or so at a appropriate temperature to "cook" the tire the pressure of the bladder is removed and then is retracted from the inside of the smoking tire, the powder coating (silicon or talcum) prevents the bladder to stick inside the tire.

    Watched the guy putting tires on at the Freightliner plant in South Carolina. He would roll 4 tires at a time to the side of the truck. He made sliding them on the hubs look very easy. The rig for tightening the lug nuts is computer controlled and tightens 5 lugs at a time. It pulls them up to torque and lights a light for each lug. I don't know if it is electric or hydraulic, but it is very quiet. The operator pulls it off, re-clocks it and tightens the other 5. It is pretty large, but it is suspended so it is easy to move around.

    Mounting a 22.5 or 24.5 truck tire by hand is so much easier than a 16” tire. It was nice to see him do his own tires. I did my own as well, because most tire guys are just about fast and not about doing it right. I always torqued to 450 ft/lbs and never had an issue.

    Pro tip on mounting 22.5’s. If you want to set the bead on the tire it’s a good idea to set it on a 5 gallon bucket horizontally dish side up. It keeps the tire centered without any outside force on the tire. Also you don’t have to bend over as far.

    Old mud flaps or a yoga mat. A yoga mat would actually be useful if used a couple of them to change truck tire on and cheaper than mud flaps. Keep it quieter and prevent dings and scratches in those aluminum rims.
    When I was a mechanic in the oil field we modified an old small air tank and made a stand to mount it on so we could take the large filters from the trucks and skid equipment engines and put them in the holder. And then run air through a pressure regulator (about 15 PSI) into the tank and when the pressure built up we could open a butterfly valve and get a rush of air into the inside of the filter which would blow the dirt on the outside of the filter out of the pleats. We could extend the life of the filters to 3 to 4 times what it would normally be.
    Just make certain that you have a shield on the handle side of the valve and point the open side downwind. You will get an incredible amount of dust in your face if you do not.

    That brings back memories, I never any beads that broke that easily, they had a heavy yellow slide hammer to break those, farm tractor and industrial tires with.
    Never had a bead blaster either, much safer than the way we had to do it...

    Andy I love the air tank blaster you made! Back in my day it was starting fluid and a match which worked just fine. The old wheels had to be in a cage.. If memory serves me well I thought it was a 100 lbs. and not 120, but as you say my shop my rules!!

    Great video! I used to drive the big trucks. It always amazed me watching our tire guy move those tires around and mounting them up. It’s a real art.

    Ughhh . . .memories. Many years ago it was 10:00x20 bias ply mounted on split rims or Budds. Tire cages a must.

    Great video, nice change from turning wrenches. Reminds this 70 yo of my changing the old slip ring rims tires on my 1956 Ford super Boss F700 Dump back when I was a youngster and crazy. Wish I still had it today, I have to settle for my newer 2004 F350 dump. Good job as always.

    Back when I had the misfortune of messing with those Muther's they were split rims. Even with the tire in a cage when it seated, I'd jump up 3 ft. Didn't have a clip-on air chuck had to hold it. Scary. Didn't have an impact wrench had a 4-way. Don't miss it at all. Keep us up to date on Andy's progress.

    I certainly did my fair share those types of tires working at my local municipality, only they were the old school split rings. And we also used that “Ugga Dugga” torque wrench. 😂

    i was a tireman for goodyear from 85 to 2000 and you reminded me of how easy it was to change the tubeless from the tube type split rims and my bars were longer and it was as easy as you should it but i was 300# and just mounted the first bead with my knees. i miss it and tahanks. Take care from Joe in upstate new york
