    I started Melee once Slippi came out, and I've been grinding UnclePunch super hard. I've been a Melee spectator since about 2017, and I'm more excited than ever for this to continue. Also Kira is coming back to SSBM Tutorials? This year is going to be a banger for sure.

    half this stuff has never been mentioned in any melee guides i've looked at so far. on any discords, on tutorial videos, etc. basic tips like recovering high instead of low is better, wavedash being useful to cancel endlag on dash (seriously how has noone talked about that?) the only explanations i get for wd are that you can use it to wd in and do a standing attack while moving forwards, or for microspacing, things that barely help a new player unlike being able to cancel your dashdance quickly if you go too far forwards. or that you can jump cancel while dashing to grab. it's basic bread and butter stuff that isn't mentioned. thanks for the guide!

    I've been getting back into melee recently, and was starting to get really frustrated getting beaten so consistently, not knowing where I was going wrong, and just not feeling like I was understanding the game.
    Watching this video totally realigned my thoughts on playing melee. I've been solo practicing way more the past few days and working on incorporating the basics taught in this vid into my game. This video has literally made me more capable of enjoying melee.

      If you like practicing yourself, getting a crt from a thrift shop and having a gamecube and the game would be a huge first step. You can get a head start on tech skill, if you'd like. Or just play the single player stuff for fun :)

    • @liamfoote7164

      @@MrSlowpez10 That is probably more of an ask these days than having your own laptop. Yeah it might technically be cheaper to acquire a crt, gamecube/wii, memory card and a copy of melee. But those are all discontinued products that serve far less function than a laptop would. Not to mention to whole only would be able to play on their own thing. You're right that would be a "huge" first step. As in too big for most people to make, especially when they don't even know how much they would actually enjoy playing it.

    • @Lep_19
      @Lep_19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't really apply as much these days, but locals are the ticket to this in my experience. People in your area will go to tournaments in your area. Something else you can try is joining a community Discord (this is particularly useful if you go to a college since there's almost always a college-based Discord for Melee/Smash).

      @@anikai4584 That is true too, and incredibly unfortunate. It is obviously easier said than done but if you have the means and the will you *can* create a local community. A good example of this is the Indian Smash community, largely started by one guy. Nintendo consoles and the SSB games were never released in India in an official capacity but today they have (albeit small) active scenes for Ultimate, PM, and Melee. (Not suggesting anyone 'just start' a scene, as I know it's a difficult feat, just thought it was an interesting thing to throw out there).

  • @finmin2k
    @finmin2k 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm an ultimate player that thinks melee is a better game in most gameplay ways, I just think that not being able to change your controls is down right stupid. People like leffen (because melee is their life and because they can afford it) are buying or modifying controllers to remap the layout because melee's default control layout -- that you can't change -- is pretty terrible. I would definitely switch from ult to melee if you could change your controls through slippi or something. Maybe use your power as big man toph to try and influence the melee gods into granting us this basic, practically essential and very easy technology of switching your god damn controls. You've been able to change buttons and turn off tap jump since brawl, but none of the later games have something like rollback. I'm sure somebody could manage to let you change your controls.

    • @clipCommander101
      @clipCommander101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll say this is probably the main reason why i didnt get into the game at first. But as someone who also came from ultimate and hated tap jump and smash stick and default controls in general, you can definitely get used to it. I can't imagine playing ultimate ever again after adapting to melee

    • @Pabmyster
      @Pabmyster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems awful at first and there are definitely times where it sucks, but tap jump actually opens up a lot of possibilities for easier inputs on certain techniques. Also, there is new controller trchnology being developed that will allow players to remap buttons and make inputs more consistent. Look at the GoomWave DX controller if you want to learn more

Developing the muscle memory at a slower speed and then pushing yourself to try it a normal speed for a bit is really helpful. One thing I've been wondering: how tf do I deal with spacies when my eyes can barely keep up with them? I notice a lot of fox players focus on hard technical stuff that is way beyond their level. They would be so concerned with shffl shine pressure and multishining and its kinda like "woah woahhhh buddy slow down, do you wavedash or waveland?" They complicate their gameplans somuch more than it needs to be.
    When you learn to be competent with Fox, you learn that few MUs actually require Fox to be technical. Most chars, namely mid and low tiers get destroyed simply by a Fox playing fundamentals and making good decisions.

    For new players I tell them to learn to get away from pressure. Like tell them how overpowered it is to use shield plus C-Stick buffering. New players get stuck in movement, but its easy to hold those inputs while you are getting combo'd or in hitstun. Then (as the master) just chase them and show them that you are catching on to rolls so they can buffer the jump or dodge instead. This also primes and prompts them to get into attacking out out shield by flicking up on the C-stick twice to do an up-air OOS...I dunno but this is the fastest and easiest thing for me that doesn't involve shield grab which is more commital. For example falcon up-air OOS can be followed up by a dashback once it comes out and he lands. This way they don't have to lab out nair OOS with an L cancel and then dash back, nawmsayin?

    • @djhooker8782
      @djhooker8782 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better things to do instead of up air out of the shield would be wavedash oos or nair. Those don't require c stick and are easy to do. Using c stick twice to do aerials out of shield seems very counter intuitive since you rarely want to full hop out of shield.

  • @WIZA327

    I'm tryin to get gud at this game. As a noobie Sheik, what do you think I should work on first? I essentially can't even move my character, but I don't know how to practice it... like that dash dance with the wavedash to avoid the skid, how do I do that? I'm kinda lost. I can wavedash, I understand ledgedashing and slide offs too.

    • @WIZA327
      @WIZA327 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like he mostly does it as a "wavedash backwards" before turning around. Is there ever a time to use it forward? I guess if you're going for a dash -> wavedash -> up smash or something?

  • @myilmazalper

    I'm quite new to Melee (never played any other Smash), but I've been struggling with aerials and with grab and shielding animations.
    I watch videos of people getting out Frame 1 aerials in uncomfortable directions, and I can't even begin to fathom how one executes a Nair right after jumping or out of shield. Is there any sort of trick to this?
    Also, waiting for the grab and letting go of shield animations (alongside a few others) is very hard to get the hang of because of how these animations look like they're over before they really are, so I keep pivoting instead of dashing or light shielding instead of grabbing. Is there some way to know visually when O'm actionable after an input? Maybe a mod or something?
    Thanks to anyone who reads and/or helps.

    • @djhooker8782

      In 20xx there are overlays that show when you are actionable

    • @sdw-hv5ko
      @sdw-hv5ko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Long answer incoming!
      1. Some people use claw to get aerials out quickly, which means you use your index finger to press x/y and your thumb to press the c stick. Others use tap jump. You can also use z to aerial, which hbox does. But tbh most people just do it the old fashioned way and only use their thumb for all of it; less efficient imo but people make it work. Play around with some techniques and do whatever's comfortable! Also speed comes with time; don't try to rush it. Focus more on clean technique than speed for now.
      2. Get the 20xx hack pack and set the color overlays so that your character is green during wait, which gives you a visual for when you're actionable (lots of youtube tutorials for this). Also underrated: set it so that your character is green during IASA frames as well, because you're also actionable during those frames (I can explain IASA is if you're unfamiliar). Hope this helps!

    • @myilmazalper
      @myilmazalper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the depth in your answer, I already use 20XX but without any knowledge of its functionality, I'll look up how to better take advantage of it and not worry too much about the aerial speed for now. Cheers

    • @WastedFlan
      @WastedFlan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To find the color overlays, in 20xx you can go into vs mode > debug menu > training codes > color overlays.
      You can set the color for IASA there. And then if you go into "action state overlays" you can set a color for "wait" which is the most usual actionable state. There are a whole ton of states lol but dw wait is near the front.
      I also kinda recommend from your slippi emulator, going into config > gamecube > and setting slot A to a memory card. Just so 20xx will save your overlay and you don't have to set it every time. I also have the music turned off and saved this way. As far as I can tell it doesn't mess with playing online.
      A lot of timings in melee or smash in general revolve around your jumpsquat. Say something like a wavedash involves timing an airdodge right as your jumpquat ends and you enter the air. Hence if you wanted to do a nair asap out of shield, it would be the same timings as like a wavedash. Same as like a shine out of shield if you play fox or falco. That being said being able to instant aerial isn't actually super important honestly. A character like sheik gets a lot out of nair out of shield, it's a great option, but there are a lot of more conventional and probably easier options. Like rolling, spotdodging, wavedashing, grabbing, just jumping, or not being so strict on aerial-ing as soon as possible.
      Btw I noticed you mentioned the letting go of shield animation. Because of how slow letting go of shield is, it's a pretty bad option that most melee players will never touch - which is pretty different from the newer smash games. So it's not surprising that you're expecting it to be over sooner.
      In general if you find yourself inputting things too early, it can be good to slow down. Doing something a bit slow can be less frustrating than getting your input eaten or getting a light shield instead of grab. You can gradually speed up from there.

  • @1122markj
    @1122markj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    No time to explain in full detail but. Low recoverying coming upward is not always a last ditch effort kinda thing. I understand what Toph means. But I don't know if he went into detail at all about why it's good to Low recover. But basically you can use it when you know you're high recovery will get read, you go low and gain access to a recovery tech walljump. Which is easy as shit once you figure it out! But If you get shined offstage you'll have to Smash DI inward hard enough to hit the wall to even tech. But other than that, usually coming up from low is fantastic because of Techwalljump. But you are going to want it to be last ditch but sometimes instead as a mixup!

      @myboy_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called a shorthop. Whenever you jump in smash your character has a short squatting animation before they leave the ground called "jumpsquat." In order to get a shorthop instead of full jump you need to release jump during your jump squat- so tap and release it VERY fast. Different characters have different timings depending on jump squat- ganon is very lenient, fox you have to be very very fast, falco and marth are in the middle. Takes practice to be consistent with fox, it's almost like a quick slide across the button instead of a full press

    • @WastedFlan

      Grabbing can be rly good there. Also baiting out and whiff punishing the down smash. Dair is the aerial that will prolly break cc the earliest but you'd still have to built some percent first.
