"This game can be played completely blindfolded because of the audio cues" Actually, there's this blind kid who was able to play Rhythm Heaven games just from the audio cues alone, and had famously wrote a thank-you letter to Nintendo.
I decided to replay this game after setting it down since my comment. Even with the break I did much better than my first run. That's partially due to remembering the songs, but it feels good to do!
same. i basically begged my mom to let me get it and honestly it’s improved both my rhythm because of audio cues and hand eye coordination because i depend on visual cues just as much.
I find it very interesting how music is something that becomes ingrained in a person if they're taught it properly at a younger age. I was taught some music when I was younger, and found that I had a lot of those inherent understandings coming back to music when I was older, including a sense of rhythm and pulse. It's intruiging watching videos of people play this who didn't have any sort of musical training and struggle with what is musically pretty simple rythms.
Fun Fact: Rhythm Heaven was made with the idea of improving peoples Rhythm And as a person that never had any real musical training, Rhythm Heaven really helped me with getting a better sense of Rhythm.
@@boredgoddesstori6635 indeed. It is a game designed to be accessible to all, including those without any kind of musical training. I just find it intriguing observing people who've simply been brought up in a different manner than myself.
Tengoku is a dual edged sword of a word, translating to either Heaven or Paradise, depending on context. That's what makes the NTSC/PAL region naming scheme so good: they just said "yes" and did both.
I'm legitimately amazed you managed to talk at all without getting messed up, meanwhile you're apologizing for not talking "enough". Great video! I'm excited for the rest, and curious how the 8 year time gap affects the later parts. :P
4:20 If I understand how the game counts correctly you are at about +- 2 FRAMES (1/30 or 1/60th of a second depending on the rate) of error which is about the leeway you have in the main games so you're doing fantastic so far
What I love the most about this series is the way the music is written specifically for the cues. If you listen to the music in isolation it accommodates the cues to the point where you can tap along. Seeing the perspective of a teacher is interesting because the GBA game was meant to be more of a teaching tool with its minigames. The newer games still have some of that, and the series overall does a great job of introducing more advanced concepts in music theory (swing, compound time, polymeters, and whatnot).
It's really cool seeing a music teacher's perspective on this! I first got this game when I was about 11 or so, and I really felt as though it helped me improve my sense of rhythm, especially in regards to things like triplets and syncopation. I think me discovering this game coincided nicely with me learning to play the cello around the same time, and it was almost like a nice introduction or beginner course for some elements of the cello. I definitely think the Rhythm Heaven series with its cute graphics, awesome music, and relatively simple rhythm would be great for teaching kids some fundamental musical concepts
Oh, this is going to be good. Please tell us if/how you do incorporate this into the classroom and how it goes over. I noticed that if you reverse the colors on the screwbots, they could represent half notes and quarter notes.
One thing you might not know... even if I'm 6 years late... is that *every* minigame in Rhythm Heaven is fully completeable blindfolded. The audio cues are that good.
obviously any form of crypticness I could apply to avoidng spoilers is undercut by me being 8 years to late, but I found your comment about the audio cues entertaining in light of the fact the game starts screwing with visuals to the point of them being uselss later on.
It’s interesting to see a musician playing this, as I’ve only seen non-musicians with… not the best sense of rhythm, so it’s nice to see it from the perspective of a fellow musician. I love the music in this game, there’s only a few songs that I’m iffy towards
if you had your students play the rhythm heaven series you would go down in history as one of the greatest music teachers to have ever graced a classroom
This video is pretty old already, but I really want you to know that this video was awesome! you’re really incredible - I wish you were my music teacher! :D
If you ever wanna check out some more rhythm games, I cannot recommend Vibribbon enough. It has basic controls, but a wonderful soundtrack. In fact, you can even add your own songs. Would need a ps1 emulator tho.

On that note, even the physical cues are enough to play. The game is surprisingly accessible.
@@mads_in_zero The game is noticeable harder for people who can see because we visually can see our failure making it hard to focus on the music.
