    So just to clarify, Alaska's orientation of the Big Dipper was correct. The North Star is not a part of the constellation itself and can be located by drawing a line through the two stars at the edge of the Big Dipper's 'cup' which is on the opposite side from the 'handle' and following it from the star from the pair that is on the 'lip' of the cup.

      Yea, Alabama’s flag is based off the fact that southern Alabama was once part of Spanish Florida. That said, Florida has more claim in my opinion to the Red Cross flag then Alabama ever has due to historical context

      @@stevenchoza6391 that may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that Alabama does a have a claim to the flag design due to part of its territory being old Spanish Florida. Florida it self has always had a superior claim to it in that regard, but Alabama still has a claim none the less.

      I’m aware… but given the confusion with Alabama… and the fact that’s Alabama, people assume it’s Confederate rather than Spanish in origin (again, not helped by the conflicting historical record).
      And since people assume Florida’s flag is a copy of Alabama’s, it gets lumped into a Confederate Battle Flag homage, which never ceases to irk me as a Floridian.

    Maryland's flag is two coats of arms connected to Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, who first founded the colony: The Calvert black and gold for Cecil's father George Calvert, and the Crossland red and white for his maternal grandmother.

    I’m a native of South Carolina so I’m probably a bit biased because I like my state flag. The reason why the flag has a palmetto tree on it is because of an attempted naval invasion by the British in Charleston harbor in 1776. The only defense the harbor had at the time was a fort made of palmetto logs. If that had fallen, the U.S. war for independence would have probably been lost.

    The black and gold checker pattern is the symbol of the House of Calvert, the Barons of Baltimore and the founders of our state; and the Red and Silver cross meaning is debated. South Carolina is D tier!? Oh hell no. What Grey doesn't realize is that back in 1776, The British attempted to invade Charleston, who's only defense was a fort made of Palmetto wood. When the British fired their cannons upon it, *the cannonballs bounced off!* If it weren't for that, they would've won. The Palmetto saved the state. It deserves to be on the flag. As for the moon, it's not a moon. The design originated with Col. William Moultrie, who took the blue of his soldiers' coats and the crescent shape from their hats to fashion a signal to let the city of Charleston know if and when the British were coming during the Battle of Sullivan's Island prior to the Revolutionary War. For such a great teacher, he really needed to do more research.

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @cerberus0225 Or... and hear me out here... flags are more than just pieces of fabric we use to tell different regions or nations from each other. They're symbols of a people. Sometimes the best way to make a representative symbol is to break those "precious rules" and do things which don't necessarily make sense to outsiders. They're guidelines, not hard rules, and plenty of proposed designs follow them without being half as good as what states already have because they're corporate and sterile.
      We in Pennsylvania could replace our flag with, say, a keystone flag, or the Liberty Bell, but those designs fall flat because in the end, they look like they were cooked up by a boardroom. Aesthetics can't be nailed down to a set of rules, and neither can national mythology, and trying to do so makes designs that feel artificial. That's what this tier list falls prey to- it grades flags based on how well they follow rules rather than whether they're actually distinct or inspiring.

    • @cerberus0225
      @cerberus0225 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheAngryXenite Except that flags actually do serve actual functions, which make things like fine details useless as its supposed to be identifiable from a distance, distinctive, and easily replicated. Its also not supposed to have text because if you have to slap your name on it, then you haven't exactly succeeded in making a symbol that identifies you. As for other text, it can work if its part of the design and I do think Grey goes too harsh on that point.
      Despite what you might think, it's possible to have symbolism on a flag that is meaningful to the people it represents while also not being confusing to other people. Claiming that your crescent moon isn't a crescent moon and it's actually a hat is lazy. It's a white crescent on a blue background, put up in the air above a tree. It's a moon, don't try to argue otherwise, because that's what every other person on the planet would see and reasonably assume it to be. If you want a crescent-shaped hat, make that instead. As for the palmetto, I have no issue with it aside from the specific depiction being a bit ugly.
      Finally, you seem to be confusing good flag design with corporate minimalism, because good flag design is also minimalist. Sorry to burst your bubble about this, but as it turns out, symbols and effectively identifying yourself through them works the same whether you're a country or a corporation. Saying that good flags look like corporations made them is just admission that corporations are good at the same kind of symbolism, which I'd certainly hope they'd be considering how much they spend on marketing.

    Yeah... Florida's the state I've lived in since I was a baby. It hasn't changed its basic concept -- the Great Seal on a saltire -- since 1900, and they quickly made it worse by CGP Grey's standards by changing said seal to include the state's name for the first time since its pre-statehood days. Its first flag as a state was just the seal, no saltire.

    As a Minnesotan, I wholly agree with Grey's assessment of the current flag of Minnesota, but I strongly oppose his proposal for a replacement (along with most other recent proposals that have been made for a new flag for Minnesota).
    The thing about Minnesota's flag woes is that there is a perfectly viable proposal for a new flag that was first proposed in 1989: The North Star Flag (there is an image in the "Criticism and calls for redesign" section of Wikipedia's article about the flag of Minnesota, if anyone's interested). The main reason why the Minnesota Legislature refused to adopt the North Star Flag was because the legislators felt the current flag was "tradition" (weird, considering the current version was adopted six years before the North Star Flag was proposed) and should be preserved for that reason. Since that time, there have been a flood of new proposals, but the North Star Flag still remains the most popular proposal, and all any other proposals have been doing is fracturing the support base for adopting a new flag. IMO, all of the support for changing Minnesota's flag should be aligned behind the North Star Flag, or else the change will never happen.
    One proposal I really like involves adopting the North Star Flag as state flag, making the current flag a gubernatorial standard, and bringing back the 1893 flag as a "state banner."

    Here’s the thing about his reasoning for South Carolina being low, the palmetto and crescent moon are incredibly important to its states history. The palmetto was incredibly important in the defense of fort sumpter and the crescent moon was a symbol worn by soldiers, and used by Charleston to know if British were coming.

    As someone very much into flag design, I take a lot of issue with some of Grey's choices. Particularly when it comes to California and Colorado, he was far harsher than necessary, and his own biases pushing NC much higher up than they deserve is frustrating, and with South Carolina, a flag that is fantastic and his design is just straight up worse by comparison, putting it down in D feels ridiculous
    I've also come around to the option that text is not inherently a flag ruiner; if the rest of the design is good then text doesn't intrinsically ruin the flag, like with California or Mississippi. California especially with it's text is calling back to their first flag and an important, if brief, part of their history.

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the issue with his tier list is that he assigns general rules for flag design (don't use words, keep the design very simple and easily recognizable from a distance, etc) and then grades flags based on how they adhere to those rules, rather than a more subjective sense for the aesthetics of the individual flag. Speaking as a Pennsylvanian, I've seen proposed redesigns, and I'd rather we keep our current one over most. They meet his standards (simple color scheme, simple design, obvious symbology, more easily recognizable)... in fact, the problem is that they meet his standards *too well.* They feel artificial because they're ultimately designed the same way he decides good flags (follow this ruleset even when it makes the flag less striking or diminishes its history) and it makes them feel phoned in. Our flag isn't good, but it's better than some minimalist design that's just a keystone arch.

    • @oklanime
      @oklanime ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The fault wIth Grey and many vexillology geeks is that they zealously follow the five rules of flag design. The rules are meant to be a guide, but they aren't the end all be all because "good design" isn't objective in any way possible. Rules are fine to break if breaking them makes a unique and well designed flag, meanwhile following them all doesn't matter in the end if all it creates is a bland, uninspired flag.
      The recent flag redesigns in Mississippi and Utah prove just how following the rules don't matter. Mississippi made a beautiful, meaningful, flag that was quickly adopted by the people within that state despite breaking the five rules. Utah faithfully followed the rules yet the flag is just a boring, corporate-looking logo that will probably be replaced again in a decade.

    Georgia should probably be the next state to change its flag. They should change it because the design that the seal is placed on is the main flag of the Confederacy (the Stars and Bars) during the Civil War. If Mississippi ditched the popular Confederate flag (the flag of the First Virginia Battalion, Lee's Army) in favour of the magnolia flower, then why doesn't Georgia ditch their Confederate flag?

    • @insanity693
      @insanity693 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, in my opinion, it should be up to the people which flag they want their state to have. Even if the states remove or change all confederate symbols. It’s not like they can do anything about people flying confederate flags going down the highway or in their front yards.

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite ปีที่แล้ว

      @Insanity It should be their choice, but flying a Confederate-derived design is questionable considering they're states and the Confederacy was a bunch of rebels and traitors fighting to split the Union because they lost an election. It's a dumb hill to die on when they've got so much history to call on outside of those four years where their ancestors shot at their countrymen.

    • @insanity693
      @insanity693 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAngryXenite fair enough, but you operate under the assumption that everyone who fought for the confederacy did so of their own free will. That is not the case. There is a movie called “Free State of Jones” that depicts what I’m talking about quite well. The confederate flag that so many call racist is only a battle flag. In my opinion, that battle flag represents those who fought and died without ever being given a choice in the matter. That flag is their memorial. I say this because I am descended from some of those who were forced to fight. At the time, those who were able to fight yet refused to fight were usually hanged.

    Pennsylvania native here. I've done the work and I honestly think we could keep our design with minimal changes. Just blow up the design a bit, make the flag black with the central emblem being made white, and (kind of meming now) make the flag shaped like the state. Because fuck Rhode Island and Ohio being the only ones with irregular flag shapes. I've seen a number of proposed redesigns and they have a tendency to overrely on the Keystone symbol, which makes them feel a bit... artificial.
    Also, people keep suggesting truly heinous color schemes. No, bright yellow and navy blue is NOT pleasing to the eye. Please, stop.
