I read about Neil owning Hank's guitar a few years ago....the best dream I ever had, was that I met Neil Young. I mentioned how cool it was that he owned Hank's guitar. Before I knew it, he came back and handed me the guitar to play. I started crying as I strummed those strings. I woke up. It was a good dream.

I saw Neil Young on a TV show, where he was surrounded by about 9 different acoustic guitars, and each song he played, he used a different guitar. Each one gave a completely different tone, sound and vibe. Talk about a Master. Neil is the Ninja of the accoustic guitar.

The sheer and utter joy emitting from Roscoe as he spins this tale of hero worship is one of the best things I have ever seen on the internet. I mean every word of that in the best possible way. Generally, one never believes for a moment that one could possibly meet the people who, without ever knowing you, have such an impact on your life. It is clear the effect this encounter had on him and the lasting impression it made. And Roscoe being a person who does not at all come across as "star struck". Clearly a dude who had been around more than his fair share of famous people. Otis, your channel is great! Not being all that much of a country fan, it is through your channel that I became familiar with Kenny Vaughan's playing and he has become one of my favorite musicians to enjoy. Been following Eric since his 80's Del Lords days. What a great NYC roots rock band that was. And he's done so much great stuff since then both playing and producing. Look forward to hearing more from him. So many interviewers get in the way of the person they interview. I love the way you just sit back and let them tell their story.

I would say he's more of an artist than a musician. I think of a musician as someone who uses known standards and keeps things within the boundaries. Artists go outside of those boundaries. Innovative artists always bring change that sets new standards. Guitarists who are artists: Berry, B.B. King, McGuinn, George Harrison, Hendrix, Duane Allman, Young, Iommi. Artists change the way things are done. Lots of great guitarists but they didn't change the way the instrument is played. You can do this with every instrument and singer.. there are very few that change things.
Even though I am not a musician and know nothing about instruments nor equipment, I really enjoyed this story and not only because I'm a Neil fan. Great story about a very memorable event.

Huge Neil Young fan but also Steve Earle, Bottle Rockets and Blue Mountain. I bet he has great stories on those guys. "Dog Days" by Blue Mountain is my favorite album of all time. The reason for The hard R is he is from Canada and in parts of the open plains they talk similar to the Northern USA Plains from Upper Nebraska up and Western parts of the Midwest if you got to ever hear a person from there, Corb Lund and his band with his wife called Corb Lund is very similar.
Not to take the thread all gearhead or anything (self-ignorant or bald-faced enough to pass as honest?), but ca. 5:40-5:55, he mentions "My guitars, I run sorta what I refer to as a 'resistance' setup, they're not really easy to play...Neil's was very much a resistance setup." If there's any more audio on that lying around out in the editing room, even just 5-15 seconds connecting that dot a bit, I imagine a few of us would love to hear it! Player and producer, he also speaks engineer when he wants to. Cut makes sense there, rolling right into another tasty story that exemplifies what the show is all about. Regardless, many thanks to both of you for getting this down, and out on the web! Any gearhead chat fallout would more likely take up space on tdpri, or gearpages, or diyaudio or such, I promise? By "resistance setup' I was referring to the set up of the guitar. A combination of the neck relief, action and string gauges. For most of my career I've used a set of strings that went from 12 to 56. A few years ago I relaxed into a lighter 11 to 52 set. I like the neck to have a little relief and to have the action not too low. I like the guitar to 'fight back' a little. For me that type of setup works well with my playing. Neil's gauges weren't that heavy but playing Old Black it did feel like a 'resistance setup' to me.
Neil Young is one of my favorite artists. He’s just cool. He’s just a great songwriter and performer and I’d reckon a great human as well. I’d love to see this place and hang out with him. Now that’d be cool
To record Neil would be great in itself. To only be in the presence of Hank’s guitar would be awesome,not to mention having the privilege to play it. Also was one of the first guys to get into what became the sport of mountain biking in Marin County. Still has a little workshop in Marin.
I love Neil Young and his music. I've been trying for years to play the acoustic guitar like Neil does, and I'm still working on it...maybe someday.....
I think that Neil bought his ranch on the strength of his sales of "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" and "After The Gold Rush." He was already living out there by the time he recorded "Harvest," and a photo of him and the Stray Gators playing in the barn our there is depicted on the back of the album cover.

That's not the same Barn that Roscoe is talking about when he was at Neil's long-standing California "Broken Arrow Ranch", outside of Redwood City and San Francisco. The Barn in the New Movie, "A Band Of Brotherhood-A Barn", is on Neil's newer Colorado Ranch, where Neil and Daryl Hannah live part of the year. They also recently purchased a 117-year-old cottage on a lake near his hometown of Omemee, in Ontario, Canada. According to Neil, he and Daryl "moved back to Canada to an old cottage on the lake" sometime after September 2020. He uses the place as a bit of an isolation chamber. I haven't been able to glean any information about what Neil has done with his Broken Arrow Ranch that he gave to his late wife Pegi, just before she passed in 2016. I'm sure he still owns it, considering all the possessions he had stored there. I believe his son Ben may still be living at Broken Arrow with his caregivers? Anyway, different Barns, but BOTH are set up for makin' great music. His whole recent latest album, simply called "Barn", is where he recorded it with Crazy Horse 🐎, (with Nils Lofgren back replacing Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, on Guitar, Piano and Accordian in The Horse. Anyway, just thought some folks might find that tid bit informative?

Great, great stuff. In my particular age - "generation" who isn't a Neil Young fan. I remember when Harvest came out, popping some blue tip matches myself and spinning that record. The economy of notes and sound but full of rich flavor-genious. I saw Nils right after Grin at a small club in Denver, just starting his solo stuff, f'n amazing. He was eyeballing the ceiling of the place which was unusually low on stage, I was waiting for the back flip thinking "don't do it man", he's a small guy but in that place-no way. Both Neil and Nils great live....(he didn't do the back flip).

I have seen him play that guitar onstage. He told us about the guitar, and did a few songs on it. The tone was like no other.

Hank owned a few guitars Gibson's also. Also Martin's were 10 a penny back then for Hank.

Great, great stuff. In my particular age - "generation" who isn't a Neil Young fan. I remember when Harvest came out, popping some blue tip matches myself and spinning that record. The economy of notes and sound but full of rich flavor-genious. I saw Nils right after Grin at a small club in Denver, just starting his solo stuff, f'n amazing. He was eyeballing the ceiling of the place which was unusually low on stage, I was waiting for the back flip thinking "don't do it man", he's a small guy but in that place-no way. Both Neil and Nils great live....(he didn't do the back flip).
