It’s actually very easy to tell exactly in what context John said those words, even with just the quote by itself. “We’re more popular than Jesus now”. Not better than, or bigger than, or any of the other phrases that American newspapers attached to it, simply more popular. More teens (and folks in general) were crazy about the Beatles than about Jesus. It was a simple fact statement. Unfortunately, I live in the Bible Belt, and I know that any comparison to Jesus that isn’t 100% flattering will draw instant fire and brimstone from the fundamentalist crowd.

The whole Jesus controversy was in the South. The reason being is that the Southern Heirarchy in the US at the time hated the Beatles because back 1964 they refused to play to segregated audiences and effectively ended segregation for rock shows in the South.
I think the larger issue was not what John Lennon said about the Beatles' popularity compared to Jesus, but rather his statement that Christianity would "vanish and shrink" and saying he "needn't argue about that. I'm right and will be proven right." This seems to have more of an anti- Christian tone to it and probably prompted a lot of the reaction...

John Lennon had visions of all-time top billing. It was not a matter of being better than anyone else, but it was about out-faming everyone else. It was a domino thing. Very early on it was in the Lancashire region a matter of out-doing The Hollies, then out-doing the entire UK in rock music, then it was Muhammad Ali, then Elvis, then he was coming after Jesus. He goes, " Ooops, shouldn't have said that ", but there was ambitious intent there. Damn near did it all, too. He approxaimately equalled Elvis. He reckoned that he topped Elvis.
My money is on John. We still celebrate the great musicians of centuries ago, while 99.9% of the myriad religions that have popped up in that same time have died. Christianity’s time will come. John’s message will live on.
Some of the people this documentary got to talk about John sound like they don't even like him very much? I don't know if the point was to show different points of view from all sides? In my opinion, with humility and due reverence to our Lord Jesus Christ, John Lennon made his worse mistake of saying whether "that either he is more or bigger than Christianity or Lord Jesus Christ. The sad story of his life and that of Paul McCartney together with George Harrisson and Ringo Starr deserve - - - again, in my opinion - - - the understanding and blessing of God. That is why they were given the rare musical gifts to combine and to succeed. Unfortunately, John Lennon abused himself that certainly - - - in my mind - - - displeased God Who could have saved him from evil minds roaming all over the earth.
When John Lennon made the comments The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ at that point everybody was just pissed off with him if I was there right now I would probably would be saying who the hell do you think you are and why all of this and it's all of Because of You everything is a misery and you think you think your the Sheik of araby well you're not you no good piece of how could you do this
Today a Band like this wouldn't make it. They are okay visually. It was a part in time where people wanted something new and exciting. America just lost JFK: It was like a sign of relief. I guess. After Elvis what next from the African Diaspora derivative they can propel to the top. Oh these 4 Lads from humble Liverpool, who wrote amazing Pop Rock N Roll songs. The 60's was a time of exploring. America wanted something better than Elvis. After the Beatles they got the Empire of MICHAEL JACKSON: But this frenzy started with these guys ,because they were globally moving the world.
We literally don't know. It's the entertainment industry deciding who can make it or not. One Direction and BTS are nothing extraordinary looking either without their make-up and stylish clothings. They're all human irl. If The Beatles were picked up today they'd be covered in tons of artificial stuff to make them look cuter
Bigger vs more popular...?? There is no difference. Tell me what the difference is. It depends on how the word "bigger" is applied, but the biggest and most popular usage means "popular". The Beatles were big!! VERY popular! HUGE!!! I don't think bigger would be interpreted as PHYSICALLY LARGE in that context, even if he DID say "bigger". It means "widespread" either way. And even if he DID say "more popular", that can be taken differently. It can have multiple usages. Love vs "believing IN" (??) vs liking their music vs WHATEVER!!! It's a can of worms if you try and bisect and dissect and over-analyze it. But the fact is... John WAS anti-Jesus/anti-God. He was well known to be an atheist, and 90% of atheists are simply God-haters. The intelligent atheists know what I'm talking about and agree with me. One atheist friend of mine calls them "my dog died" atheists because they are angry at God because their mom suffered for 20 years from cancer or Alzheimer's or something, anything that caused them to be angry at God. Also, this video fails to address how mean John often was with ANYBODY!! A lot of times he was a REAL BASTARD!!! But this is a whitewashing. Let's not talk about his faults and how he contradicted his own teaching and preaching about "Love". "All you need is love."?? You too, John! It's part of the human condition, so forget about trying to change society. "Give peace a chance."?? Fuhgeddaboutit! What does that even mean??? Stop the Vietnam war?? That's nothing in the overall scheme of things! Stop all wars?? They tried that after WW1. It doesn't work!! I'm saying the only government that can work is a One World GOD government, but that'll never happen until this demonstration in the futility of man-made government has been proven to fail. To me it has, but many still think man CAN successfully govern himself. He can't. Fuhgeddaboutit.
How can anyone be bigger than their creator ?? and 🙄 ok you say he is bigger than Jesus Christ well Jesus rose from the Dead and seated at the right hand of the throne of God. John Lennon is dead from this earth! Period never coming back.
What John Lennon said, I agreed and still does. Why? Beatles was a Pop/Rock band. Biggest of them all and still are. Jesus was son of God and got crucified by a corrupt Judge. Politics and religion should not be mentioned on the same day. So… Look at the world today. If the world could see things more as true art. Religion would never be that excessive and the planet would have been a more peaceful and cleaner place to live on. Add to that John might been alive? Jesus would never had been crucified? ☮️❤️ ☮️ ❤️☮️❤️☮️❤️☮️❤️
Lennon was funny, good at his craft but i would leave it at that . He does not know anything about politics , or theology , or anything else. His wife on the other hand - Yoko - is the educated one .
Lennon would have been the greatest leader of any country since Jesus. Equality love and peace. Isn't that what Jesus preached? Also your grammar is incredibly bad. He is dead for a start, so how can you say he does not know anything? Surely you know that when someone is dead you need to use the past tense, where did your English teacher come from? Also what Nixon said was a lie, America had already lost the Korean war well before Vietnam. Vietnam was not the first war America lost and has not been the last since. (Afghanistan and Iraq).
@@swirlingfudge Well. When it is 1 am in the morning, and you have had a bottle of whisky, I guess I missed a comma. DO DE DO DA DAY. Everything I said was true. Apart from a coma. SHE'S DEAD?!? Oh no, that's very sad. I always remember her flirting shamelessly with Dylan in "Don't look back"
"Happiness Warm gun" "Mother Superior jump the gun' in reverse "MOCKED FOR MY THEORY OF CHRISTENDOM"
You will ruin your records playing them backwards, grow up.
@@ericthefish01 But the Fabs put so much effort into that "art" form, entire tunes have it
John Lennon had visions of all-time top billing.
2k years from now let's see who still remembered Jesus or John .
I agree!
My money is on John. We still celebrate the great musicians of centuries ago, while 99.9% of the myriad religions that have popped up in that same time have died. Christianity’s time will come. John’s message will live on.
@@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 Jesus died for US, Lennon did not
Some of the people this documentary got to talk about John sound like they don't even like him very much? I don't know if the point was to show different points of view from all sides? But it was kinda off putting for me when I really love John Lennon and all of a sudden I hear someone basically talking shit lol makes me want to turn it off!
Haters gonna hate. Even today, more than 40 years after his murder
They made a point of white & black sitting 2gether as they play 2 the people not colour so at the end of the day they where right & out spoken ✌🙏☘
In a way yes, if you consider than the know World wasn't that big in the days of Jesus life on earth . even that christendom didn't exist yet in the same era !
he said they were . more popular then then Jesus
I don't think that wanting world peace is childish! Jeez, man.
Though I do understand where that statement is coming from. Better phrasing would be that it would be unattainable at that time. I don't think we are any closer to that unattainable dream, wish in 2022.
Listen to The Beatles on separate lives driving music and listen to for myself 😄 inside tree music like people beautiful type's for me jejeje Since I can go and trying to get new thing's for myself 😄
I am The one who has more Cruzes but you never put on all Cruzes because i am not a Priest they might put on more Cruzes but one thing i do know you should only have one on because I am not a mercenary
The Beatles might not be bigger than Jesus, but they're infinitely less fictional than Jesus.
😂🤣😂.........🤔
Will admit urself to state hospital while u still have a breath perhaps ur delusional ways will pass...
They’re bigger than him too. Last I checked Jesus had 0 Billboard #1 hits 😉
😂😆😂😆Good one, and true too!
There is way more evidence for Jesus than for any other historical figure around that time. It's not close.
The U.S. Government killed John. 😢😢😢😢
Very interesting comment but no comment it's too dangerous to comment and that's that Love You Dearly John
Ole Blighty had a hand as well
John Lennon knew of MK ultra nsm -2200 the construction of NASA via the Nazis half the US govt via the Nazis how?? He knew things and had the opportunity to use the camera and the mic as a weapon r.ip John .!
Any talent God gives you is to Glorify him not ourselves. JESUS CHRIST is the gift.
Now and then. And they wouldn’t make it today.? You muppet.
Utopia . There will always be a war somehwere
A great quote: the Beatles said All You Need Is Love, and then they split. Where was love between Lennon and McCartney in 1970?
And Cancel Culture was born
33:16 ... LOL!! yeah, right.
The only Bible i have is a King James Baptist Christian Bible book that is what I am because every religion stopped believing in what they were
Hell yes he's bigger
Than Jesus!
No one is bigger than Jesus Christ and also Jesus Christ is Jehovah God's Son Period
How can anyone be bigger than their creator ?? and 🙄 ok you say he is bigger than Jesus Christ well Jesus rose from the Dead and seated at the right hand of the throne of God. John Lennon is dead from this earth! Period never coming back.
what the fuck is pagon?
Occult SATANISM et all
At least the Beatles were real.
🤣😂.....🤔
Exactly!👍
Jesus existed. Even scientists looked into it and came to that conclusion.
He was not bigger than Goose Jesus, Happy Goosemas.
😊😊😊😊😊❤
What a irresponsible thing 2do!!!!!!!!!
Add to that
John might been alive?
@@jonathanbennetts2632 Jesus didn't lead a country, and you missed a comma after 'Also'.
@@swirlingfudge Well. When it is 1 am in the morning, and you have had a bottle of whisky, I guess I missed a comma. DO DE DO DA DAY. Everything I said was true. Apart from a coma. John was a genious

Jesus never had any hit records.
Correct... Jesus only made the lame 2 walk, the blind to see, the dead to rise , & walking on water, & being truthful about rising on the 3rd day...《 there wouldn't be book big enough to record alllll the miracles》...
He did have a lot of sampling of his material like Dust in the Wind and Turn, Turn, Turn.
Yeah unlike Lennon, Page et all Jesus turned Lucifer DOWN
Only a homage to Lennon. No criticism at all. Bad journalism.
He represented a revolution only to the deluded !!
