    I've watched a few dozen of your videos over the last couple days, and just pulled the trigger on my first fly tying material order, most of which is coming from FTD. Keep up the great work!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching man. Yeah FTD is a great resource! Good quality products at pretty darn good prices. Just out of curiosity, what of theirs did you get?

      Fisch eyes, a bunch of Arctic Wind, H20 Flash, and a bunch of Congo Hair baitfish blends.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congo Hair is good stuff, so is Arctic Wind. Next order look into Starburst dubbing. I use that for a lot of things. Arctic wind is not quite as fluffy as senyo's laser dub, just FYI, so you will use more material when trying to get a thicker baitfish pattern, but still really good stuff!
      Fish eyes are pretty good. I have honestly found some better deals on eyes online, but they are pretty good quality and still really good prices. Like 4x better price than in the shops or other name brand eyes online. And they are higher quality than the cheap stuff I have found also.
      Their H20 flash is good stuff, basically flashabou, if you find colors you like using.
      Good luck tying man. Again, all their stuff is pretty good, and it is great deals. BTW, if you like dry flies, check out their skeeter fuzz. I just got some of that, and its great for small dries. Dubs on super easily!

      Thanks for the advice! I'll pick up some Starburst here soon. I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, so I'll probably be tying more baitfish patterns than anything for largemouth and inshore saltwater species. I'm taking a trip down to Miami in a couple weeks (I try to go at least twice a year for peacock bass), and I'm sure a couple of the patterns you've done videos on will be perfect for them.
      Also hoping to make a trip back up to Nantahala, NC next year (just went last month) so some dry flies will definitely come in handy then.

      Try the EP style flies, great especially with that congo hair. Starburst will be good for smaller baitfish patterns.

    Thanks for your very helpful and practical review, based on your own real-world experience ...I'm in the market for a reasonably priced, simple to use, full rotary vise to tie small flies (nymphs and drys) for wild trout and grayling in our UK rivers and streams ...I've considered many alternative manufacturers...with your help and advice, I'm going for this Renzetti model...thank you very much....happy Xmas!

      Glad to help, and I’m happy you liked the review. So I do think for small nymphs the renzetti is one of the best out there. Also not terribly priced right now at $190 online at some places. However if you want to get something a few bucks cheaper the peak vice is very good as well. However the jaws are just a bit more rounded so not as good for super small flies. I’d say size 18 and larger so if you plan on tying under size 18 then definitely go for the renzetti. Good luck and have a great holiday

    The Renzetti vise is a great vise and is hard to beat. I have been tying flies close to 30 years. During this time frame, I have tied with just about most of the big name vises out in the market, ( i.e...Renzetti, Dyna-King, Regal, HMH and Stonfo). All of the above listed vises are all of excellent quality and one cannot go wrong with purchasing and tying with any of them. Which a matter of fact, each of these vises with last a lifetime if not multiple lifetimes, as long as proper maintenance and hook placement are applied and the vise is not abused and only used for it's intended purpose.
    My favorite vise and the one I believe to be ahead of the pack is the JVice. The quality and workmanship of the JVice is 2nd to none and Jay Smit from South Africa produces the very best and most user-friendly midge jaws.

      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jvics is great man, I’ve heard good things as well. But I’ve never tied on one so I can’t compare. But the dynaking is also great! I think better than the renzetti for larger flies. The grooves hold larger hooks great, however with tiny hook, I found with the normal jaws, there just wasn’t enough room for tying under size 24...

      @gangunitsergeantmartinez7656 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about the large pockets on the Dyna-King jaws holding large hooks extremely well. Dyna-King offers midge jaws that can accommodate hook sizes from 12 all the way down to 32's. Renzetti's jaws also hold large hooks very secure.

    Are you still using this vise? If not than what and why? Have a danvise with extension arm but hard to tie small flies. Just fine for big but I tie a bunch of small. Thanks

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and I love it! Works great for super small, and as large as I regularly tie. I don’t go tarpon fishing so I don’t need super large hooks.

    • @xoshooter
      @xoshooter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler only thing I didn’t like was the jaws are not infinitely adjustable also the rotating axis and I’m ‘limited ‘ to just 3 positions. Had peak had any adjustment to get the hook along the axis I would get that. That’s one use for your knife, thanks for replying.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never need it perfect personally. Lol. But again I tie for fishing not necessarily beauty, so perfection isn’t my target, speed and durability is more my goal.

    Any advice on getting a vice for a beginner. Like you videos, subscribed

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, so for a beginner, it depends on your budget. This Vise is a great one, but $169 might be out of the price range for starting. However, don’t start with a junky Vise or you will get frustrated. I’d say look for one on eBay

    • @Kigai11
      @Kigai11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler Thanks for the reply, after some thinking last night I decided to get this vise, your link has the one for 169.00 Im ok with that price, I just hate buying junk I'm sure this vise will last me a long time.

    Pedestal and clamp versions are the same price and vise works down to 28 size hook.

      Down to size 30 actually... I tie very small with them.

    What makes this renzetti better than the atlas you had? I have the atlas anvil now and it’s not a bad vice just curious as to what’s better on the renzetti over the atlas.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the atlas was a good vice for sure! However I found the jaws took a bit more playing with to get a hook seated properly. Also, the tip of the jaw was much more rounded, so therefor not quite as much room to work with when tying with smaller hooks (under 20). If you are happy with your Atlas, dont get another vice, it will work for you just fine. This one is really only better for smaller flies. Also, the rotary feature is a bit smoother, and easier to adjust. But for larger flies, I think the Atlas will work better than this vice for sure. Especially over 2/0. I think those jaws are just better suited for that type of hook you know?

      I’ve heard renzetti’s are very good quality vices but I love my atlas as well. I’ve tied everything from size 26 to 8/0 on it. I’ve had it for about 2 years so far and I beat it up on the regular. Thank you for the video.

    I can’t see the reasons to still cheering up the vise even though you have the jaws damaged.

    I found a rotary vise on eBay for $35 it works very well,but I do alot of heavy duty stuff salt water jigs with 2/0-4/0 hooks

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah like I said there are some very affordable vices out there. The thing with those cheap ones, is the quality of the build. Don’t clamp too hard, or you might bust the jaws. Also they tend to be a little more sticky and take more adjusting to get the hook seated properly. Hence they are just fine for someone who doesn’t tie a ton, but for someone who tied lots of flies, it might be worth the extra spend... But yes, very usable for sure! Just out of curiosity which one was it?

    • @smcewen7
      @smcewen7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler It just Says Fly Tying rotary vice,no brand name made in india,it uses a clap spring where the hook goes ,not adjustable but holds very tight.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah like I said, not quite as adjustable, but works for sure! If you tie 100 flies a month, or even just 50, then you would want to step up, as the higher quality ones are more adjustable and easier to seat the hook properly without damaging it. But these less expensive vices work just fine! And there is no problem using them. I agree there are some great inexpensive options out there. There are also vices I’ve seen in the $1000 range! Haha. Just depends what your looking for and what your needs are

    I think this is a good review ! I looked at it like someone who ties a lot of flys should. All us tiers really want is hold the darn hook so it doesn't move and give me room to work around the hook. Vise Grips not so good, Dyna - King much better.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I disagree that dyna-king is better. The renzetti style is great for anything under 1/0.. however your a saltwater fisherman, and I think for you the dyna-king is for sure better! I know you tie on large hooks often and those jaws hold just about any large hook just fine.

    • @stewoutdoors3020
      @stewoutdoors3020 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      McFly Angler Thanks for your reply. I test ran a Dyna - King at my fly shop with a 2/0 tarpon fly tie and wow did it hold the hook well ! I'm in the market to replace my current POS vice so your review comes at a good time. My hook size goes mostly between size 1 all the way to 4/0 for sailfish. I'm ready to spend 2-3 hundred bucks.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would get the dyna king if your tying the ought sized hooks. For sure! Really good vice for that. The barricuda vice if there’s is about $275 I think
