This game reminds of a old arcade game called Robotron 2084. But with EVEN more chaos & bullet hell all over the place. I didn’t even know what was going on half of the time. I know it is a twisted satire of game shows like the Price Is Right if they decided to go all “Murder is what people want in TV” or some crap like that. I also found John Tobias name in the credits. He is the guy that (I think) worked on the first 2 Mortal Kombat Arcade games. I came here because one indie game artist, Dennis Wedin, said that Smash TV was one of the inspirations for him & his friend’s game, Hotline Miami, which he made the pixel art for. (Which FYI, Hotline Miami is nothing like Smash TV.) So I just wanted to check it out & I am glad I did.
Elikeys CDX Smash TV was heavily influenced by the 1987 Arnold Schwartnegger film, The Running Man. You should watch it you get the chance. It's about a futuristic game show where criminals have to fight "stalkers". The real life host of Family Feud back in the day, Richard Dawson, played the main villian as the host of the violent game show.
6:27 Ha, I love the way you both go for the prize even though it's clear only one of you is going to get it. That's the way this game has to be played. I used to love playing this on the SNES with my friend on his huge ass scart TV as kids. Only ever got to play it at the arcade when the carnies came around once a year with the fair. The SNES version was pretty much spot on in all respects. I'm guessing you weren't using twin stick control for this play through though?

What's cool about the NES version is it allows you to use the dpad on two controllers giving a similar experience to the dual stick arcade. It also has a pretty impressive amount of enemies onscreen. The game itself definitely isn't as good as SNES or arcade, but considering the limitations of the NES, I would say it's pretty good.
I remember as a kid playing this on what I assume was a collection of classic games on PS1? Because we played crash bandicoot alot too. I remember always barely beating the jungle level
Did you know there is a turbo mode in this game that doubles the speed of the game for the next play through after you beat the game and gives you more lives and credits at the start to offset the crazy speed? To unlock it, you need to find five question mark icons throughout the game: one is in each of the three secret rooms in the game, one is in the Pleasure Dome, (which requires all three secret rooms be reached, 10 keys collected before the room "You Have Enough Keys/You Don't Have Enough Keys," one key collected in the aforementioned room, then take the South exit), and if you do all that, the last question mark icon appears once you beat the final boss, Evil M.C. and get the prizes that appear. Get that to activate turbo mode. BSulpher has a FAQ/walk through up on GameFAQs that explains all this better than I could.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get all the keys when I played it in 2 player and I don't expect to be playing the game again any time soon through netplay. If it was completely up to me, perhaps I would give it another try, but this is 2 player and the game is a little longer than others.

I was using both joysticks on my Xbox 360 controller. I'm not completely sure if player 2 was using a keyboard or a controller.

Nothing can touch upon the arcade game. It's kinda unfair to compare too. The arcade machine is 32-bit.
