Yup he got a slight case of the *Mark Weins Syndrome* - Over astonishment at food and radical facial expressions during an exotic dish.. Well, I think I have a touch of that too... Not complaining at all mate not one bit :D
I went in Sept 2013, and trust me, he was not being stared at. I am a 6 foot tall black man; let me tell you. That was STARING. Everywhere I went people were taking pics and wanted to take pics (those who overcame their awe) with me. I really enjoyed it and hope to go back one day.
Great post! I visited Shanghai three weeks ago and loved it. The people are friendly. The food is super delicious. The metro is a great way to get around. Yes, it is crowded and will have to get used to being pushed around, but it is not rude, it is a matter of space. I highly recommend visiting.
Hi Mark, my sister and I backpacked Europe over the summer and your videos were a HUGE help. The German language videos were great. I was told at times that I did not have an accent. Until my vocab ran out lol. It inspired me to learn the language now. Keep doing these videos, they are very informative and helpful. I still watch them now that we're back state side. I was also recently presented with the opportunity to teach in Munich; great city I might add. Thanks again Tschüss, Jon
very cool! I lived in Shanghai for 3 years, and loved it! I never imagine myself living in China for that long before I went to Shanghai, but the city has spring a spell to me.. It's the feeling of diversity that made me feel like I wasn't alone in a country I wasn't even understand the language. The feeling of old china is not really bold in Shanghai, but for living, its perfect. I was still surrounded by chinese culture, with good people from all over the world that became my second family far from home. I went around Shanghai when I'm seeking for old china atmosphere, but then again I can go back 'home' in my old apartment in Shanghai. I would go back to Shanghai in a heart beat! Glad you enjoy Shanghai
I lived in both cities and I must say I love Shanghai and it is where I consider home. It is truly the city that never sleeps (Not New York), it always has things happening and is a great place to visit with a lot of things to do.
I have family living in Shanghai and I think that really enhances the experience every time I go back because there is always something to see, do and EAT! I take advantage of the really cheap massages, facials and hair treatments you can get and it is great that many open up till 10 PM at night. I really recommend people checking out the 24/7 spas we have in Shanghai, it is something the younger generations do to hang out with each other. Also the beautiful lavish restaurants that are 5 floors and themed (Maison De L'Hui, Golden restaurant and a restaurant that has a bridge indoors with aquarium underneath your feet). Just an example of the dining scene in Shanghai.
I totally agree of what you said. I am a shanghainess and I am proud of the city although there are many more "hate". Actually if you discover more in hongkou district you can find the treasure of culture revaluation
I completely forgot about that. yes, super annoying. I think Beijing's stops at like 11, but restaurants are already dead (more or less) by 8 so I can see why they close down :) thanks for watching and commenting!
I am really glad to hear the videos helped. Very cool about the opportunity to teach in Munich. I would do it :) Thanks for watching (and continuing to watch) I really appreciate it! all the best!
Shanghai was amazing!!! The city has a very young and unique feel to it.. The nightlife was great and I felt very safe traveling solo more so than I have ever felt during my trips to Chicago.. Not to mention, its also very cheap and affordable!
Im a Shanghai local, I totally agree with ur opinions about Shanghai, the bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, cabs, cinemas (not sure in nowadays) are more expensive than other cities in China, also summer times in Shanghai is extremely hot.
I was in Shanghai for 6 months, and I LOVED it!!! I miss it so much since I'm back in Italy, that's why as soon as possible I would love to go back there (hopefully with a job!). I also went three days in HK, and honestly I found it way much more expensive! in SH I could eat in local restaurants with only 20/30 rmb, while in HK I couldn't find such good prices. Also the same brand of cigarettes I was smoking (the "8" cigarettes, cheapest ones :P), was 4 times more expensive in HK than in SH. to Tavin Wong.... I sincerely think it is a nice nice video, with no need of "professional editing work". there are no "final cut pro" effects, like some other videos that kind of fake everything and make things look shiny and wonderful, when they are not. on the contrary, in my opinion, this video gives relevance not only to the passion of wolter, but it also gives a great kick of reality, with those people passing in front of the camera and do godknowswhat in the background :) that kind of reality that really made me smile and feel "second" homesick. woltersworld nice nice nice video again! :)
The only thing I find expensive in hk is accommodation, mtr is amazingly cheap and efficient, food is cheap if you eat at right places but it's difficult to find good quality cheap accommodation. I'd hate to live in hk with their property prices
I will have a love/hate video on Beijing out next week or the 2nd week of November. we had some "technical" problems with some of data so trying to recover a lot of lost videos and photos. thanks for watching!
in shanghai? I would head into town (about 45 minutes in a taxi) then take a bus tour that goes around the main sites so you can see the main stuff, then on the second go around get out where you liked best but with that much time you can walk the Bund (see my top 10 sites in shanghai video for better tips). and eat some tasty food :)
It is 2024 and i love your videos. They might be 11 years old but still. You tell the facts. Just a dude talking. No annoying travel blog, self cenctred narcisist shots like any travel video these days.
When I was living in Nanjing I got a lot of chances to visit Shanghai, and I was astounded by how clean the air was in comparison. Biggest city in the word and the air felt just as breathable as in the rural countryside that I'm originally from.
yeah, I noticed on my visit china videos I have been speaking a lot faster than normal. a few times it was because the cops were watching me and I wanted to finish as much as I could before there were "issues" but yeah, sorry about the speed
Shanghai is the safest place in China.... And it is really expensive to be honest, without compromising the quality of food and stay, its gonna cost as much as HK and Singapore....
For hotels, food and drink, HK and Shanghai are probably about the same these days, sure. But I'm looking at apartments for expats, and what you'd get in Shanghai is twice the size as and twice as nice as what you'd get in Hong Kong..!
I come from Shanghai but living in New York now. How can Shanghai be better than New York? New York is just so much more fancy, modern, rich and fashionable than Shanghai. Shanghai is not even better than HongKong or Tokyo.

Really fair review overall. Appreciate all the good and bad tips from a perspective of a shanghai native. Not so much foreign travellers would have taken time to review everything as they travel along. Excellent job there once again.
woltersworld i just wanted to drop you a line. i have sat here for the last 30 mins. and watched most of your videos.. i must admit there really good.. straight forward and with clear information. thanks again..
i think i might do 1 myself. next time im in the Philippines... i thought of a few things to hate.. well 22.. but finding it hard trying to think of good things..4. lol
I went to Shanghai around July 2009 and I did like the city. I thought the people were very friendly, the architecture and the buildings were very nice, I did like Zughou a beautiful place. What I didn't like was the insecurity, I was afraid of pick pocketing, I was afraid of police, and I had a bad experience on going out at night, that is the only bad thing about Shanghai. I love Shanghai and I will like to visit that city again.
I would go with shanghai. they both have like 25 million people but shanghai gives you a bit more elbow room with the people and more space. definitely go to Beijing for a logn weekend or a week to see the sites, but if I had to go back to china to teach again I would pick shanghai over Beijing. though Beijing is super cool too, just feel shanghai would be more fun in a western sense
Thanks. I appreciate the kind words. Send me a private message here and give me an idea about what you do and what you would like to do and I might be able to give you a few tips or advice if you like. I have a few off the top of my head to eliminate and to look at. so just shoot me an email here.
I started to write something but was cut off. I lived in Shanghai for 12 years and loved every minute of it.I left Shanghai in 1949 and never had the chance to go back because of lack of funds. : ( Maybe if I am lucky I might still be able to visit. Hopefully maybe one day. I am 90 yrs. old so not much of a chance ...........
Thank you Wolter for an excellent and very informative video. I am going for first time to Shanghai and Quanzhou in September.Cannot wait! (I love all your videos)
speaking of the heat, you're just there at the wrong time. Shanghai actually has longer spring and autumn and warmer winter than northern cities like beijing, which means there is longer good time to go there
Hey Chico! I love your channel! Just one comment: in the winter Shanghai is freaking cold. The temperature doesn't go down too much but because of the the humidity it feels like 10 degrees below it is shown in the thermometer. The same way in the summer it feels like 10 degrees above the thermometer.
nice job out there, Mark, especially in this freakin' weather! hahaha, havent been back there for quite a while, thanks for reminding me of the wonderful city!
no, I am from the US, the Wolters family came from very western part of Germany near the dutch border so I am sure we have some cross pollination in our family :)

that twinkle in his eye when he talk about food, his real passion.

awesome city. just awesome. I would love to go back next summer and teach there. so cool.
true about the eye contact thing and staring. very true
I think shanghai has the most beautiful skyline.
维杰严 I prefer HK
cannot agree more
Tokyo is better
it was my favorite mainland china city. so cool.

seriously it is. I was amazed.
What a fun, informative video! Thanks for posting it.
will do! thanks!

I completely forgot about that. yes, super annoying. I think Beijing's stops at like 11, but restaurants are already dead (more or less) by 8 so I can see why they close down :) thanks for watching and commenting!
I like this guy. Short and sweet. Gets to the point.

Shanghai is the safest place in China.... And it is really expensive to be honest, without compromising the quality of food and stay, its gonna cost as much as HK and Singapore....
Oliver Huang that is true. I did notice that shanghai was the priciest of the cities we visited. but it was so awesome!
woltersworld yeah, it's a great city. And thanks for the great video of my hometown.

My favorite thing in Shanghai and China was the street food.
most of them are made w/ gut oil LOL, never eat street food in China
boltzmann7 That is Taiwan gut oil, not China.

I really like your 5 and 5 theme, and you can talk good too. It is fun following you around China. Thank you!

I just noticed you did this video nine years ago I was living there at that time
很有意思,我也喜欢这个城市

that was one thing I was sad about, we did not have enough time to film in hong kong :( such a cool city!
I know China is not good enough, but you gave us positive comments, thank you.
If China's no good. No other countries can call themselves good , believe me
nice job out there, Mark, especially in this freakin' weather! hahaha, havent been back there for quite a while, thanks for reminding me of the wonderful city!

thanks man! I've been aproved for my university to study in Shanghai for 4 months next year.. gonna need a loot of info! :)
no, I am from the US, the Wolters family came from very western part of Germany near the dutch border so I am sure we have some cross pollination in our family :)
This is why I never visit the city until October/November, best time of the year when the temp is cooler and low humidity. Also crab season is a plus 😋
Excellent report
+STARLING Watch thank you!
i like you videos mate, can you please make a videos for cheapest Europe countries to visit.
I've lived here for 3 years and never felt unsafe or seen pickpockets. Scammers yes but they stand out a mile off
I've only been here for 4 months and 2 of my friends have already had their pockets picked. One was my girlfriend, took a photo of another group of friends with her phone, put it back, we walked down the street and 3 minutes later it was gone. Another instance was with my other friend who actually saw the pick pocketers and ran after them. They didn't want any trouble so they just gave it back.
So with that said, even though I know if you're careful you should be OK, I still feel a little anxious in crowded areas (:
you are hard to target...
Thanks mark
you are very welcome sam
