The Day We Learned that 480 Otis Has a Mini Me - Explore.org

- On July 9, 2022, an unidentified subadult, with an uncanny resemblance, stepped beside Katmai brown bear 480 Otis, and began watching and mimicking his every move, in what appeared to be an attempt to learn his fishing techniques. For nearly 15 minutes, the two bears stood side by side, as cam viewers delighted in the sight of a miniature Otis fishing alongside him. Is the young subadult bear a descendant of 480 Otis? Without DNA testing, we'll never know, but the eyeball test checks out!

Looks like 820 to me, Wallflower, I think? When he was more active earlier in the season, he was always fishing along the wall next to the Office.
I thought Wallflower was bigger, but I'm not sure. Someone told me that McKate thinks it's a bear she calls E, who is now practically hairless and waiting for winter fur to grow in, so it's hard to say. They look so different now. Time will tell.

It was torture watching for a full five minutes before the little guy got a fish. 😰 He had to work hard for his supper. Otis is a great coach - the perfect balance of stern and supportive.

It is bear 208. Bear 435 Holly's grandson.☺️🤎 And yes, this bear was hanging out at the falls quite a bit earlier in the summer.
It’s 28. Formerly known as bear E. I call him 28E. He was around a lot this summer. One of my favorites!

Cute, watching Otis trying to slurp up that dangly piece of fish skin, like it was a spaghetti string. They do look exactly alike.
Anyone who thinks they could fight off a bear should watch one eat a live, fighting fish like it’s a sub.
Just watching this and realizing how wonderful Otis is. But I had to wondered where was this little one’s mom? He can’t be a subadult can he? He is so little.

Yes, but very rarely. Definitely not in his top 5 fave spots.

I don't know about you, but it appears to me that these salmon were left in critical condition.
How old a bear needs to be to be classified as a subadult?
Old enough that their mother has emancipated them and is no longer taking care of them. Generally, at 2.5 to 3.5 years old.

So wait a minute, is that the bear everyone thought was a skinny Otis when he first arrived to brook falls? Or was Otis really skinny one time and just got more bulky over time?
Otis was so skinny upon arrival this year so is really looking good now in comparison. Good ol’ boy never fails to impress.
