Perhaps the most elegant film noir ever. www.slantmagazine.com eclectic and glowingly reviews (RoberEbert also raves) but surprisingly omits it from its recent top 100 film noir list. Shinoda's only film noir apparently and in his Criterion interview he mentions that the lonely street scenes filmed in Yokohoma as impossible in Tokyo. Japanese noir intense and unsentimental (eg Kurosawa's High and Low) and about to view Imamura's Vengeance is Mine with that director like Shinoda and also Oshima comprising Japan's New Wave.
Great Choice. That's my favorite yakuza-flick. I love Masahiro Shinodas films, his version of Chinmoku / Silence is still better than Scorseses attempt (which is also a good film, but not as great as the original)
Thanks Chris! That version of silence needs a Criterion upgrade! I think Masters of Cinema have it on DVD. it amazes me that they have some phenomenal DVDs in their library which they can upgrade, as they have Kwaidan too. Thanks for watching as always!
Just finished watching. One of the most beautifully elegant and rich gangster films ever. Fantastic 😘🤌🏽

Man I really loved this movie. So cool and beautifully shot. Easily one of the best gangster movies ever made.
