Its who passes out first or who wakes up first...that is the question... Hughes lost conciousness and collapsed causing Carlos to hit his head and full unconcious deeper.. Carlos must cry at this loss...
Hermes Franca's flying knee knocked out Sean Sherk during the fight and Sherk recovered awareness by getting his head hit on the mat as he fell. Are you saying Franca should have won the fight because Sherk was out before he ate the floor?
@jdumars But Mccarthy ended the fight while both were out. He literally pulled an unconscience Hughes off Newton and the fight was over. He should have let the fight go on until one of them actually came to.
It doesnt matter if he was out first their was no tap and the ref had no way of seeing him passed out so by hughes dropping newton and newton getting Knocked out was the first true sign the ref was able to see of any reason to stop the fight.
that happens a lot in fights. you can blackout for so short period of time and wake back up before the ref or anyone knows it. but that wasnt hughes saying that obvioulsy
right call was made the ref saw hughest slam newton and newton was ko'd its not like matt just fell and the ref didnt know matt was out and he cant just change the call
How lucky can one man be. He actually passes out invisibly and by falling down, his opponent (which he happened to have in his arms) falls with him and gets knocked out from that. Meanwhile, he's still invisibly knocked out and because they can't see this because the other guys legs are still wrapped infront of his face, they assume he won. Anyway, Hughes was definatly out. I just watched this fight for the first time without even knowing about it and it was clear he was out. Look at his hands.
Think of it as a real fight. Who wins on the street if one guy loses consciousness briefly, knocks someone out during that and gains consciousness? The guy who's conscious at the end of it.
In a real fight there wouldn’t be a cage and if it were real newton would’ve been slammed on something harder than a canvas and would’ve been more injured
@KingDre88 I did not make it seem that way, you interpreted it that way. Perhaps you're a WWE fan that knows about all their little games, I don't. I was thinking more like in a real fight (which MMA is as real as it gets without being illegal), when two fighters are both seriously hurt, its usually the one left standing thats the real winner. Hughes was more a winner IMO than Newton, even if it should have been a NC.
There's nothing controversial about this fight. Hughes lost consciousness but he could still slam the African to the mat unconsciously. Legit win to me.
@filthynumber1 yes technically carlos choked hughes out before he got slammed, in a video game that should have stopped the timer. BUT in a real fight it would go to whoever wakes up first, cuz he's the one who would have been able to push his dominance over his comatose opponent. Afterall...this is the sport of fighting, which is always unpredictable. Anyways Hughes kept the win, let it be.
I've seen this fight many times and IT WAS MOST DEFINITELY AN UNFAIR STOPPAGE. If the first to get up from a double KO wins, then Hughes PROBABLY would have won. But McCarthy ENDED THE FIGHT BEFORE THAT COULD PLAY OUT. He saw in Newton's face that he was unconscience, made a snap decision, PULLED HUGHES' LIMP BODY OFF NEWTON, and declared Matt the winner. He couldn't see Hughes' face by the way he was laying after he DROPPED NEWTON (NOT SLAMMED). If he had he wouldve seen two unconscience men.
The ref has to stop it for a sub or a tech sub, he didn't stop it and Carlos Newton was unable to continue, there for, Matt Hughes won. Edit: If people want to call it a no contest, fine but i can't see Carlos winning
Simple even if Matt was out the second Newton hit the mat he was conscious and Newton wasn't there for the Winner is Matt because there was no way of knowing he was out. Glad to find this I always wondered if he was out or not, but even when out his motor functions weren't that's a slam folks, not a drop.
You guys are funny about the street fight theory. In a street fight he would have held onto the fence. Actually, in a street fight, they both would have parted in separate directions, peacefully. wait, did I actually just reply to this?
@a1ex8o5 That's funny dude, you're spot on, but hes just a troll. He always comes off with the same old edict and everyone see's right through them except him. He jumps on people for no reason and tries to indoctrinate them with his self proclaimed omniscient abilities when all he spits out are weak insults. I find it humorous that he gets himself riled up so effortlessly and how he's always so proud of himself after each of his tirades. Oh well, I'm bored, moving on. Don't feed the troll :)
@jdailey01230 Actually that's a pretty good point. That could have been a decent way to deal with it, but still, Matt was out first. We just need replays for situations like these.
@filthynumber1 Just because you comment on everyone that shares a different opinion than you that they're wrong doesn't make you right. Go look on the official record, Hughes got the W. So you are incorrect.
@KingDre88 I only read your first message as I can see debating with you is pointless. You assume way too much and read too deeply into what I say and thing bring up all these other irrelevant points. Despite what you say, in the end Hughes got the W and since you like technicality, that ends your discussion.
@jdumars 1st off, the fact that you focused on insulting me, proves that I was right & that you have nothing to counter my points. 2nd, The way I type is called phonetic representation. On the Internet, when you type on message-boards and blogs, the accepted way of typing, is to type like you are SPEAKING. You don't type like you are writing a book, a report, or a Physics Thesis. Of course, if your were educated, you would know that. Dealt with.
@a1ex8o5 What are you talking about? Man, you really are completely delusional. Me posting my background and experience has nothing to do with your "insults". It has to do with me providing valid experience to back up my statements on the subject.(Something you can't do.) It's called having INTEGRITY.(Something you don't have.). Please keep trying to swim up river, it's fun to watch! I PROMISE that you'll make it! ㋛
@a1ex8o5 So now, me validating my point of view, by giving real life references & information on my experience is "bragging"? The only people that say that, are the people that "lost" the argument, period. That's obvious. Once again, hurling insults at me does nothing to negate the valid facts which support my point of view, that I posted. Now you have a boyfriend that agrees with you, simply because I already "schooled" him on the topic. Notice he wasn't saying anything, until you popped in.
that happens a lot in fights. you can blackout for so short period of time and wake back up before the ref or anyone knows it.

Great Quality

You can also argue that Hughes would've slammed Newton earlier if he didn't grab onto the cage, so.
Hughes won because he was not called out first and he woke up first.
@jdumars But Mccarthy ended the fight while both were out. He literally pulled an unconscience Hughes off Newton and the fight was over. He should have let the fight go on until one of them actually came to.

he could have played it off until he clapped his hands and realized he had won hahaha
well lucky in one sense but unlikely that he went out before he was able to actually do the slam himself.
No slam knockout. Hughes got choked out & fell down. The fall knocked out Newton.
How come when Gray Maynard got knocked out doing a slam that made the other guy tap, it was ruled a no contest. But when Hughes does it he wins lol.
In a fair world it wouldve been a no contest maybe or a draw. But let's be real, Hughes would beat Carlos 8 out of 10
@KingDre88

Only if the referee sees it and stops the match is it a loss. He was out when he lifted but regained consciousness after the slam

Yeah Hughes was up before newton so the win went to the right person.
If you read his book, he says it himself that he was out
The ref has to stop it for a sub or a tech sub, he didn't stop it and Carlos Newton was unable to continue, there for, Matt Hughes won.
Edit:
If people want to call it a no contest, fine but i can't see Carlos winning
Newton Should of won the fight, Hughes passed out and the result was dropping Newton on his head lmao. BUT HUGHES WAS OUT! FIGHT OVER!!
WRONG, the rule is only for when BOTH go out at the same time.
Hughes was out first. He lost, he knows it.
He said he was out after he slammed ole boy.. Like as he hit they both were out
Simple even if Matt was out the second Newton hit the mat he was conscious and Newton wasn't there for the Winner is Matt because there was no way of knowing he was out. he was first one to be awake so he won

I'm sure Newton wishes he had this one back
What rules are you looking at...
. . . and he STILL won!
but was also out before newton
@rainriders slam, collapse on top of. what's the difference, right? :o
@a1ex8o5

yeah he won, but i just HAD to know if he was out.. I was sure about it and it seemed right.
not according to the rules
should of been a no contest both were out
@icemilf
This comment means nothing to this video, Matt Hughes officially got the W.
@filthynumber1
Just because you comment on everyone that shares a different opinion than you that they're wrong doesn't make you right. Go look on the official record, Hughes got the W. So you are incorrect.
@KingDre88
No one brought up wrestling but you, keep your WWE opinions out of MMA.
@KingDre88

@jdumars That's funny as hell. And I agree with you.

Carlos Newton was cheated of that belt!
@TheCyndicate
LOL, you sure showed me! What took you 10 minutes to think up and type took me all but 5 seconds to laugh at. Awww, you mad!
Back and to the Left

I think he's reading his rules out of this book:
