Ebert is a legend, of course, but Richard Roeper is totally underrated. He is a very astute, thoughtful critic who also happens to be a really nice guy. Thumbs up all around!
Heard the name Siskel & Ebert when I was little but didn't start watching until 2001 when I was 12 and so Ebert & Roeper is what I know best. In fact the first episode I saw was their classic review of Freddy God Fingered.
Just proved how good the 90's were. the notion that we are OK, nothing bad will happen to the usa. The Clinton yrs were good overall and the mindset in the country was grown up, unlike now.
Charlie rose always looks like he just woke up and realizes he has only 5 minutes to do a segment and fast forwards through it as fast as he can so he can tell his boss the interview was done
I like Richard Roeper. He’s obviously not Gene Siskel, but he doesn’t need to be. You can tell he shares the passion for films that Gene and Roger each shared and that he clearly admires and respects Ebert. It’s just a shame he could never have the same relationship with Ebert that Siskel did.
People can't figure out that any successor to Siskel would suck by design. In the beginning the Ebert & Siskel pairing was choosen by the network producers and they had equal top billing. After Siskel's death Ebert got both the right to choose his partner and top biling. It only makes sense to pick someone younger that wouldn't upstage him.
It is a drag to compare but it is inevitable. Roeper lacked charisma...the chemistry between Ebert and Roeper lacked irony, comedy, animosity and competitiveness. You need all those factors to create a tv program that is both insightful and yet entertaining.

Richard Roeper: "Either way, however this plays out, we're all going to be ok." Ladies and gentlemen, meet your next president, George W. Bush!

Siskel & Ebert: Like two brothers!
Ebert & Roeper: Like father and son! (like in Kung-fu)
Everybody else: Either passable or trashy.
Of the people after Ebert leaves, the one that I’ve heard the best things about was A.O. Scott
@@fortynights1513 Scott's critic-partner, Michael Phillips (for a while appearing with Roeper on the show) gave me a bit more sympathetic impression.
It's nice to see Ebert so optimistic and enthusiastic about American democracy but with the value of hindsight we know he was very wrong.
The rest of the world was laughing. I'm from the rest of the world - we were hysterical. More recently we've been horrified.
As a Canadian I have no idea what they were talking about

Sunshine was a great movie. Ralph Fiennes best work here and in Schindler's List was always overlooked.

I think Ebert was looking through some rose-colored glasses in his estimation of American transparency, just a little...
Ben lyons and Mankiewicz
Eyyyy whaddup
Luke Smith whaddup luke
Michael Phillips AO Scott Gene Siskel
2000 was indeed a pretty poor year for movies; pretty sharp drop-off from 1999, and the 90s as a whole for that matter
can't help but picture him in an open robe. Those poor women who had to see that
Ebert said 2000 was slow and same with 2001, then in 2002 he said that one was pretty good.

Hi tech.
Siskel & Ebert
I despised Almost Famous. Please join me everyone in rejecting that film as well! I know I'm not crazy.
It's my #1 absolute favorite film of all-time! 😍 So, you're not only crazy, you're also an IDIOT.
Nobody will join you on that dumb take!
