    Months ago I came across this video and this amazing woman. I started binge-watching any videos I could find of her talks, thinking, "That could never be me." Fast forward to now, I recently accepted an offer to be a summer analyst for a well-known investment bank. I'm now coming back to watch Carla Harris' talks with a new perspective and newfound confidence. To anyone reading this, it IS attainable and you CAN achieve anything as long as you work towards it. Thank you, Ms. Harris, for being one of the most prominent role models I have come across.

    I love her verbiage. I appreciate her acknowledgement of oppression without presenting herself and experiences as a victim. She's willing to be acountable and the creator of change at the same time. I love this. Great interview.

    'We can not be an island and keep your head down and work hard, we must build strong relationships....,' such a true statement. And, it may be a challenge to find the right people to build relationships with because they are either not close to you or may reject you.

      ​@@DrAlexanderHamilton Stop race-baiting. I'm not White, but Asian. I treat everyone with the same level of respect, and decorum that I would with anyone else. I have many black colleagues who have brought up big-ticket issues like racism, and black representation, without causing people to "feel uncomfortable" because the way they all tackled the conversation was with mutual respect. They came with a rational and logically coherent concern that was based on actual numbers, not emotion.
      Black people are absolutely threatening when they claim any setback they face to be a product of racism. Take responsibility for your actions, and suck it up. Sure, it CAN be racism, but until proven to be so, there are numerous other deterministic factors that can influence the outcome - none of which can be about prejudicial behaviour.

      ​@@DrAlexanderHamilton 1 - You've clearly not grown up in a strict Asian household. Their emphasis on educational attainment is so strong that it verges on the line of toxicity. Although the style of parenting is questionable, the results are undeniable. Asians have better success than their white counterparts! Why? Because the general theme and culture of Asians to be studious as possible to create a strong foundation going forward - this yields better results for children in their later life. I owe my success to my family's emphasis on these attributes, as do my other Asian friends (who come from Iraq to Indonesia). The Harvard case was very interesting because it was clear that Harvard was discriminating against Asians and favouring other races - that being said, the entire notion of affirmative actions is reprehensible! You DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT, judge people based on their race.
      If you do, you are by definition a racist. We must all try our best to look at the individual's actions for what they are and not add random superfluous context to our thoughts.
      Solving black representation will be a slow process if done right. If we solved racism today, then there would be a 20-year time delay before we start seeing representation in positions of power. Forcing people into positions they didn't earn on merit, only fuels further hatred. Ever hear the phrase "oh he/she is a diversity hire!". We are now starting to see the disastrous consequences of affirmative action.
      2 - You should read the Brookings Institute report on escaping poverty. It cites 3 key factors. 1. Graduate high school, 2. Don't have children outside wedlock, and 3. Hold down any form of job. I back a modified school voucher system to solve the first as the current way of funding schools through property taxes is asinine. Point 2, should be easy enough - just keep it in your pants, and have some self-discipline! The last is dependent on many factors, but any sort of job from being a bank teller, to a fast-food chain employee at a young age provides the necessary base that we all frankly need. I am sorry to hear of your loss. Your independent choices are what led to your success. You put yourself in positions which elevated your status and provided you with the opportunities needed to succeed and I congratulate you for that.
      3 - WOW! You don't know me, or anything about my experiences. With some exceptions, most Black people I have spoken to are fixated on race, and nothing else when it comes to topics of these sorts. This clouds their judgment and continues their victim narrative. Do you feel like a victim with a net worth of $50m and at least 1 Ivy League degree? I wouldn't. Morgan Stanley recently created a $25m institution to tackle diversity and has many recent promotions of Black people to senior roles. What planet are you living on? Even a basic check on LinkedIn shows that many juniors joining the firm have the correct melanin concentration according to what I presume to be YOUR opinion - only a matter of time before they become leaders.
      4 - She isn't a "Mannequin" and she has done plenty to help Black people. You classify it as "disowning your own", I classify it as breaking away from people who want to keep you in their own place. After all, misery loves company - even if it is unfounded. Your entire argument is framed as an "us" vs "them" situation which is so unhelpful to dissipate racial tension. Instead of seeing non-Black people as the enemy or an obstacle, see them as partners to the solution.

      I am an optimist because things are improving - opportunities are increasing (covid adjusted), and we have seen meaningful change. I stand by BLM's core message and will chant Black Lives Matter with you even though I have grievances about the specific organisation. The only way to solve these societal issues is by a diversity of thought in action. Change has to be incremental for it to stick - Black people have problems, some self-imposed, others not, and while isolated cases are a tragedy and can be seen as a racist relic of the 1800s, the US is not racist in its own right. I live in the UK now, and here the police are fight crime as they are called out as racist - see North England grooming gang report and the lack of motivation to report it. (Not related to Black people, but still on PoCs).
      We want the same thing - a fair and just world full of equal opportunity, but I find it sad that you do not think a solution is available without what I infer to be revolutionary tendencies. Good day Sir!

    What the uninformed will conclude is that there are no excuses and black ppl just need to work harder. That's not what ppl should take away from this. Just because her parents taught her to work 3× as hard because she's in an oppressive system does not remove your responsibility of acknowledging and fixing the oppressive system. You don't get to sit back and point to a successful black, female exec & say "see, she's doing it", just so you can continue to comfortably overlook the issue.

      @chinmia - Perfectly said! I knew before I even read the comments that there would be lots of people taking her words out of context, and pointing to her as their shining proof that racism and sexism does not exist. The truth is, her parents were very creative in the way they explained the system and bias to her. Her mother said, "Be so outstanding that there can be no debate. If you want an A, get an A+ so if they shave you, you'll still have an A." Her parents were actually brilliant in teaching her this way. As she said, this was their way of teaching her about the eventual discrimination that she would face. She didn't understand it or who "they" were as a child, but she certainly did as she got older. She also said that her race and gender could not be used as the FIRST reasons mentioned for being treated a certain way, but that does not mean that they were NEVER reasons. That was the whole point of them teaching her to be outstanding. If I'm excelling in every other way, then at some point mere process of elimination will show what's causing the disparity in treatment, and it's certainly not my intelligence nor my ability. Carla has certainly mastered the art of relationships that she mentioned here. She knows exactly how to word her answers to appease and not offend certain people, while still letting those of us who are more informed know that she's not in denial about her experience. How much do you want to bet that while Carla had to be outstanding to get where she is today, she likely has plenty of peers who are simply mediocre? Yet some folks still don't acknowledge that having to be three times as good as everyone else just to get to the same place is not a level playing field, unless your idea of level is extremely skewed.

      Their should be more root cause analysis as to “why” women and minorities need to work 2 or 3 times as hard to achieve success. Once it is determined “why”, we need to then come up with a solution to mitigate this unfair disadvantage.

    The problem with this is that she is talking about “adapting” to a hugely problematic system (i.e essentially ignoring the disproportionate treatment you’ll encounter and trudge along). Yet, this puts the onus on those whom receive the disproportionate treatment, instead of the problematic system.

      Well in business you don't necessarily get what you deserve, you gain what you can negotiate or acquire and that means you must have leverage. Some leverage technical skills, others leverage relationships, but that tends to be how one gets ahead.

    It makes me uncomfortable how often Poppy brings up the fact that there are no/few black women in that space. Like, we heard you the first 8 times! She's a classic example of an "openminded" person who doesn't know how to act around people that don't look like them because they've had limited interaction/exposure

    I fully agree with her statement about the policies of Upper Management not trickling down on the ground due to a bottleneck at the management and middle management levels. These gatekeepers can leave employees de-motivate and worst case scenario can destroy people's careers with bad reviews or not providing any for various reasons... And these behaviours are never questioned due to the position that they hold in the organisation. There indeed has to be a conscious effort on the part of these policymakers to ensure that their policies are carried out and those task with that job are held accountable for their implementation.

    Im so glad to see a video like this. Though my dream is IB and nowhere near yet, I feel women is needed in dis sector.
    Hat off to Carla.
    Reason I said this is I try to look for investment advice from the opposite site of me to see what their view is and more importantly to encourage my sis that girl also has a place in IB world.
    She recently comments on the post abt bank's prospect on negative interest rate. And she goes this is why I put money in the piggy bank hashtag my name on it. I was like urggggggggg... But the thing is I shouldnt project my view on her, I try to show her my pov and let her experience it herself by looking for vid of women speaking finance like dis.
    If any of yall, girl see dis. Pls put urself out there like Carla. Be Carla, Be Smart Banker. :))

      Yeah but that’s not how life works. Wall Street is know for giving top positions to males and given less glamorous positions to women. For example, in sales and trading it used to be only males could work in mortgages and women work in government bonds. Mortgages are where all the money was being made so it is hard to progress when assigned with government bonds. In order to change we need to address this inequities even if it makes people uncomfortable to talk about.

    Carla is amazing.
    Having said that, I don't believe in quotas at all. A company shouldn't decide that you need x% amount of women or whatever. You just end up spending way more resources than would be necessary on promoting people who are of lesser quality. Spend training resources on the best candidates whoever they happen to be.
    On a positive note, I will spend more time on building relationships in the future.

      Ariel Investments has always hired Blacks from day 1. Many other investment companies are doing great at diversity.

    This is far simpler than people are making it out to be. This woman got her job because she didn't believe in excuses. Women love to make reasons and excuses all the time. If I ask my wife to go shopping for groceries she will give me 5 reasons and excuses why we should do it later or another day or on her terms and times but if I ask my buddy to go shopping he will just say cool lets go. Men just DO things more.

      1. Your wife giving excuses and your buddy (who is obviously a man) not giving excuses has absolutely nothing to do with their gender and everything to do with their character and or personality. There are women who are action oriented and there are men who are action oriented. There are men who are hardworking and there are women who are hardworking. Or do you have any statistics to prove that men are more action oriented than women or that mean are more hardworking than women?
      2. Until recently with the push for equity, women have been doing grocery shopping and related household chores for centuries, and men have not. Your wife a few decades back would have been the exception not the rule and so would have been your buddy.
      3. You can't just use your wife to make assumptions for the rest of the over 3.7 billion women on the planet and you cannot use your buddy to make assumptions for the rest of the over 3.7 billion men on the planet. If you are going to do so, please back up with real statistics and don't just make simplistic assumptions fostered by your cultural and gender bias.

      Sure lots of people make excuses men and women but men usually don't let their emotions about those excuses hold them back where women, on the other hand, will dwell on the emotion far longer and will usually let it overwhelm them. It is just brain chemistry and hormones and its nothing to be ashamed of or deny. Men have far more testosterone and women have far more estrogen every doctor knows the effects of these chemicals on our brains.

    You want more women to be CEO on wall street..... build your own Fin Tech and Financial Institutes from scratch, and you can hire all the women you want to. But nah, you'd rather complain about someone else's business not doing XYZ for you as if they owe you something.
