Hi Ron. You know, I'm getting good at recognising more bird calls but the magpies have always stood out. I love their morning serenade when I'm not up before it starts in the Hoop pines out front. I'm starting very early at the moment. I thought she was distressed - it could only be here as he was with me - but she must have been fine or he'd be off like a shot. If I listen hard enough, maybe I'll learn a few magpie words! If it works for frog researchers, it could work out for me! Cheers Ron 😁
Thanks for the link to the video, Murray 👍 Yes Mr Magpie is definitely on the defensive, getting the message across. I suppose if you hound someone often enough, then something's gotta give. As soon as the kooka cackled he was like Right! You're going to get it now. Magpies are so ballsy. Did he have a go at your finger again? If so, then maybe it's his way of thanking you. This channel brings us so much entertainment value. Thanks again Murray 🇦🇺👍😀
The finger was safe but he looked like he was about to see if it was edible again 😮 The magpie rolled up his metaphorical sleeves and went for the kooka hard. So much happens around here I don't see - I wish I knew if this was residual aggro from the curl grub incident. The kookas are still singing as they go around the place so the magpie isn't nailing them every time they open their mouths. Particularly interesting times...👍😁👍
You could be right. "Bales are OURS!" I'd love to know for sure which magpie chased him away after the curl grub/bale incident. I suspect it was her because she was closest but I can't be certain. And it would be a quick change from panic mode to "I want to kill you". I bet that if he didn't see it, she told him about it. I think he could be standing up for his lady by carrying on the fight with the kookas but there could be something else in it. And after the Crested I'm thinking it might be a long memory and a hearty appetite for revenge are part of the magpie ethos. Or some newer slight I'm not aware of. There are issues there and neither species are going to move out of an established territory - I just have to hope I can catch more of it on camera 🤞🤞
Thanks Nicola 😁 It's a busy time out there coming in to spring and things are changing pretty much every day. It's going to be a good growing season this year!
I think it's possibly still revenge for the curl grub incident. Or maybe for something more recent that happened I'm not aware of, which is very possible. But I have this theory that if you annoy a magpie you probably have an enemy for life. He hunted that Crested pigeon several days after it attacked him on the birdbath. Maybe the local male Kooka is on his "naughty" list... I'm not sure if you're familiar with "Santa" in Futurama? It was a very nasty attack at the birdbath - still working on it, as at this time of year magpie bales are the priority. It's really unique and absolutely spectacular footage. And I'm not trying to sell it to you, I just need to do it justice in the edit and get it up when I can. I'm polling a few people on the first draft right now.

I suspect he knows and can recognise the individual responsible rather than just attacking random pigeons. I don't think I've seen any more incidents so maybe the Crested moved on. Peaceful, resourceful, patient, polite, entertaining, loyal, reliable........many qualities these guys.
Peaceful up to a point Sir, and after that point he attacked the Kookaburra 😁 But if you stay on their good side, I couldn't agree with you more!
Murray you are so intuned to your backyard Maggie’s that you can detect a distressed lady magpies call… that’s impressive! R

Hi Murray, Mr Maggie is only protecting his territory, he now has babies and needs to ensure his easy food source, cheers!!!🥰👍👍

Ensuring no kookaburras visit seems a bit skewed as a priority. Confused young father?
