    Also, I always test the CPU's with my Define R6's side panel off and my AC running the whole time holding the room to 24c.
    I didn't want to weigh in on Linus or OC3D's results/videos as I actually hate all the TH-cam drama stuff but they certainly had interesting results compared to the rest of us.

      did you mess with the wattage in Intel Extreme Tuning software at all.. because Hardware Unboxed mentioned this in his review but no one is talking to me about it.. I've asked numerous youtubers and/or viewers why Hardware Unboxed mentioned this and showed this at all, as it was the first time I've ever seen anyone mess with the stock wattage of their CPU. so I'm questioned with the fact that is this common or not. i would like to know that if i get one down the road it will be ok at stock wattage to overclock. I've never seen a video on this let alone heard anyone ever talk about adjusting their stock wattage before.

      i think its the Turbo PL2 TDP of 210w's that is the cause of all this. seems motherboards differ wildly on the auto turbo behaviors some never dropping to the PL1 of 95w and some do after around 22 seconds of stress.

      @Buggsy81 he probalby did any power limit tuning in the bios itself. most of the stuff in intel extreme tuning is in the bios and certainly the power limits are. its just that the intel program looks better on video capture and is easier to capture and its a standard interface to make it easier for people to understand no matter what bios\board they have.

      @chainsaw2010 some boards have the 95 watt limit on but turn it off when you turn xmp on cause they know you are going for top performance. or at least they raise the limit a lot. i got a cheap z370 board with an 8700k and it runs up to at least 200 watts when doing prime95 small ffts even with the power limit set to auto. most of the time my 8700k is at 5.1 ghz with voltage around 1.34 with an avx offset of 1. in any real world workload it does not go above 160 or so. small ffts is so unrealistic. you will never see it in real life anywhere. to be honest with my delidded chip 160w on a dual tower air cooler runs about 78c. the i9 with solder and a larger die would run cooler when at 160w im sure. 95w is nothing really and 160w is not that much either. a 2700x running with asus's pbo boost options (or around 4.3 or so manual oc) will run up to around 150w as well. 200w gets really hot with a dual tower cooler but i can run it without throttling but right at the edge of throttling with temps int he high 90's.
      if you get an i9 and set the sustained or maintained power limit (whatever your board calls it) to around 170w max and then set your all core turbo to 4.7 and maybe your 7 core turbo and up to 5ghz with an avx offset of 1 you will get 95% of the i9's performance in multithreaded task on a dual tower cooler (noctua dh 15 or dark rock pro4, but this is not the pro) and you will get about the same performance as an 8700k at 5ghz when gaming cause games dont use more than about 70w max 100.
      but power limit tuning will be just as important as voltage and clocks with this chip unless you go with a big boy watter cooler like a 280 or soemting. then you can just turn the power limit off and go to town as long as your board is up to it.

      Good luck getting any Ryzen CPU anywhere close to 5GHz though. No such thing as free performance. You want 5GHz instead of 4GHz, especially on a CPU with already higher IPC? You get a hotter running CPU. Simple physics right? More instructions per clock, at a higher frequency = ??? No prizes for guessing that one.

    I think Intel went for outright performance rather than efficiency on the 9900K - they could have easily clocked it at 4.3 - 4.7GHz like the 8700K and it would be a much cooler running CPU - at 4.7 - 5.0GHz it's running beyond its optimal efficiency curve and as a result you get these high temps. In a way Intel is almost 'pre overclocking' it for you out of the box. The downside is that there is limited headroom to overclock it further - even 5.1GHz is barely a 8.5% overclock. Intel is running this chip close to its limits at stock already.

    The temperatures out the box aren't much different than they've ever been. I have a 9700k now but used to have a 4790k. Devil's Canyon was kind of similar because it was the last consumer architecture on that process. Similar to the 9900k this meant pushing the speeds and temps to the max. The 4790k boosted to 4.4 GHZ on only 4 cores 8 threads and ran pretty hot right out of the box. I eventually put a Custom Loop on it and would still reach the low 70's when overclocked to 4.8. I think Intel did a great job at upping the core count and raising the speed without dumping crazing heat. The 9700k performs MUCH better than the 4790k despite both having 8 threads.

  • @MrBendybruce
    @MrBendybruce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the high Temperatures of this CPU are a symptom of two main things. One is that the Coffee Lake architecture was never originally designed for such a high core-count, and Intel have essentially just jammed in two extra cores in order to achieve core-count parity with AMD. The other (somewhat related to the first) is that they have not compromised on core speed. In fact they have pushed core speeds even higher. The net result is you have a very hot CPU that is pretty much on the absolute limits of what it was designed to support.
    I'm of two minds about this. I think Intel did what they felt they needed to do in order to respond to the very real competition they now face from AMD, but as a product I'm over all not impressed. I think this is a CPU for enthusiasts only, people who know what they are getting into and want the very best in performance. I think more regular users are far better off staying with the 8 series as they offer a far more "turn key" experience and can run just fine with run-of-the-mill cooling solutions, even with some moderate over clocking.
    looking further ahead, I hope Intel are very busy getting their die shrink sorted out, because I think Ryzen 2, when it comes out, will be a much better proposition for the main-stream market. I think the advantage they have is that Ryzen was designed form the ground up for high core counts. Yes it needs fast memory, but with that concession aside, I think Ryzen offers more headroom for future growth whereas Intel need to start looking for other ways forward that don't just include pushing the clockspeeds higher and higher on their existing architecture.

      Intel has had large core counts on their Xeon's for the past 10 years, just not running at insane clock speeds of up to 5ghz. Hoping for similar performance/core counts at far lower temperature in the next generation Intel Icelake/10nm chips.

For now until i can get a better cpu cooler fan i had to go in bios, reduce cpu voltage, reduce active cores from 8 to 4, disable hyperthreading and run all fans 100%. oh.. and replace thermal gel. Its a shame you buy a 1800 dollar pc and have to replace the the crap they built it with. Live and learn. Love the video dude.

    It's a little brother of the Dark Rock 4, but then again I'm running the 2600x so I've never seen it struggle with my cpu at all and it's... quiet!

I think that most cpus should be capable of sustaining high clock speed with a bit less voltage if fine tuned properly. Still for 5.1 GHz 1.300v you do have a very good sample. BTW get well soon man. As always, hope you recover fast from that flying dinosaur that bit you... When I was in Taipei they did warn me about those things but I thought it was some urban myth. From now on, I'd carry a pump action shotgun at all times ;)
    Now, on with the show:
    - There are 3 versions of that program, I would like to know the version those Australian shills, which are far worse than LTT, used on the Intel. Also, why do they show some graphs with Intel and its main "rival" and other graphs with just Intel CPUs?
    Anyway, I'm done with those shills who present less information on their methodology than LTT did, and was crucified for. Clickbait very rapidly turns against those who abuse it... Dance with the Devil...
    - Intel and their "rival" have many different ways of abording thermals and the margins the CPU has to "stretch its legs". I set all my limits for Intel CPUs at 85C, and never exceed 1.38v.
    - Running on an Asus ROG Mobo with the Noctua NH-D15S, I got temps in hour-long runs of OCCT inferior to 85C, with two cores at 5.1 and the rest at 5.0, using 1.34v. After watching some idiotic videos, I decided to have a dinner with overtime ;) and just left it running... A few hours later it still hadn't reached 85C, which is the limit at which point I have the program crash, even though Intel stipulates a much higher temperature.
    Let us get things straight, "Auto Mode" should never be used... People who know what they are doing do runs "at stock" to determine which are their best scores, this information is available with various programs, including AIDA, Sandra, and OCCT (which gives you an average for each core). After that, each core is manually overclocked, the constant voltage is set for the CPU, the memory timings are perfected, and the proper cooling curve is also manually set... That's how massive OCs are obtained. Unlike its "rival", which doesn't OC (or the gain is so minimal to be negligible), and that's perfectly fine, it's their philosophy after decades of nonexistence, Intel permits a huge OC sealing. Every Intel generation, since the 900 series, has always had similar temperatures.
    Now, what I think the Australian Shills did was hammer the CPU with a certain version of AIDA, they should know not to use, which is not used for the regular user/gamer/small content creator, either that or they are incompetent OCs, or they just made the numbers up, which is what they did in my personal opinion.
    The temperatures you got are the sort of temperatures I would expect using the cooler you did... Don't get me wrong, for the price it is a fabulous cooler but it is no Noctua. In extreme tests temperatures of around 85C are perfectly normal for all Intel CPUs running above 1.32v.
    Anyway, I see Taiwan is being mean to you. All the best, and I hope you settle in soon... The humidity of those places,
    Cheers.

      Eh it's not crap it just has a crap price. It is 15-20% faster than a 2700X but costs around double the price+$50-$100 for a cooler+ more expensive board if you want decent VRMs that will allow it to hit the high clocks you are paying for without throttling. It's just not faster by enough to be worth it except maybe you are an eSports pro or aspiring to be one and you have or are planing to purchase a 1080 Ti, 2080, or 2080 Ti and a 240hrz 1080P display. But for everyone else it's just a waste of money.

      What are you talking about out of ideas? You do know intel are actually making a 10nm chip and for amd they are lucky that had to be delayed as that will completely wash ryzen out, most likely at a cost though which is the only thing that is bad, they still make the best and yes they still run hot however no one needs to push the clocks high, it's the price of the chip itself that is its downfall

    • @vMaxHeadroom
      @vMaxHeadroom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Out of idea's.....old designs, i see..that's why Intel have broken record sales for Q4 across the board including on the desktop with wait for it...$17 Billion...yes $17 Billion in revenues this quarter alone and $68 Billion for the year...boy do those old designs and idea's really suck for sales!!!! In fact they suck so much that even at Ryzen's 12nm they can't beat Intel at 14nm with nearly 1GHz in clock speed difference...
      More to the point, Intel are charging way to much for there CPU's...no one can argue that and we can only hope AMD catch's up with Ryzen 2 and 7nm to really drive competition home against Intel as that would make them lower there prices...Right now Intel are after margin whilst AMD are after market share, when that balances out (and we can hope), then it will be even better. Right now I can't complain as AMD have released a great set of CPU's in Ryzen and Threadripper at price points that most can afford which can only be good...but c'mon, lets get real, Intel still have the lead...I know it hurts but it shouldn't as AMD are in the game and doing a great job..

    • @Czar1249
      @Czar1249 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@@brendanblack8647 You know that they've almost abandoned 10nm, right? It's already 2 years overdue and they STILL can't get their 10nm production rolling. Ryzen is already rearing to release their next architecture, moving to 7nm (10nm if I'm getting it wrong, but still). Intel is definitely out of ideas. They finally replaced their pigeon shit TIM with solder, but even their solder TIM is lower quality than what's on Ryzen 1000/2000. Intel is sticking to their guns, expecting people like you who aren't paying attention to the market to shill out 60% extra $$$ for 20% extra performance (although in past generations the performance difference was even smaller).
