  • This video was made in December 1991, when tablet working was nearing the end of operation in the Taranaki. It starts at Taumarunui, with a northbound shunt train that ran at the time, departing for Te Rapa. Then we go for a cab ride from Taumarunui to Tokorima on the SOL, before moving to Stratford. Here we see a train being made up for Taumarunui and the train's departure. There is footage of the operation of the tablet machines at Eltham station, including the "tablet transmitter" machine for Te Roti so trains could access the Kapuni line. Also running at this time were a couple of return trips of a urea shuttle train between Kapuni and New Plymouth, plus daily shunting service to Kapuni. Coverage is seen of these trains, plus some of New Plymouth to Palmerston Norh trains that were running back then. Sit back and enjoy

I drove through Taumarunui about a year ago and was disheartened to see the railway bridge crossing the river and valley shown early in this video had been removed over the top of the main road. So sad to see such a fascinating part of historic NZ infrasture forever removed, but so glad that you capture its use on film to be preserved. Along with footage from along the line. A great video indeed.

    Fantastic!
So much stuff gone mentioned here, tablets, S.O.L., Waitara branch, 4409 and 4064 looked pretty tidy back then though.
Another awesome historic look back thanks Tim

Traveled the S O L with the Forgotten World Rail carts. Quite scenic in places, alot of history on that line.

The SOL has such beautiful scenery. It’s shame money can’t be found to replace that bridge. It would be ideal for at least purist trains.
