    Got a XX model year 2001. By chance, previous owner left the Manual with the bike, and during the first few days I decided to skim read through it. This is the intro to the manual: "The motorcycle presents you a challenge to master the machine, a challenge to adventure. You ride through the wind, linked to the road by a vehicle that responds to your commands as no other does. Unlike an automobile, there is no metal cage around you. Like an airplane, a pre-ride inspection and regular maintenance are essential to your safety. Your reward is freedom." Every time I ride my XX I remember these words, they bring enormous respect to the people that created this machine.

    Thanks for the great video. Very comprehensive. I have the ‘03 Blackbird and absolutely love it. It is a heavy bike when standing still, but feels weightless when moving, and boy does it move. I have had a couple enthusiasts ask me ‘is that really a blackbird!?!’ Which surprised, but apparently some people have been mod’ing other bikes to try to look like a blackbird.
    And I love that fact that I was able to get this bike for just a few grand, and it was paid for by insurance after a woman struck me while riding my Suzuki SV650S. My blackbird only had 2 previous owners, was never laid down (still has the original body pieces with no marks). One of the previous owners upgraded the suspension, steering, brake lights and added touring bag mounts to both sides. ALl of the original parts were included in case I ever wanted to restore her. Absolutely love this bike.

    • @CurtisL8.3066
      @CurtisL8.3066 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Cool as Ice busa is junk compared to SBB and uncomfortable, all the Zeds are super sports and buzzy, bmw suspension is super expensive and less comfortable, second gen VMAX gets 100 miles a tank. All these bikes except for the busa and the 14r are slower bikes too. Try again.

    • @CurtisL8.3066
      @CurtisL8.3066 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Cool as Ice what’s wrong with anything I said? Top speed is higher than any bike except for the zx14 and the busa. That’s documented. Let’s talk about the finish issues in the first gen busa... I’ll quote directly from mcn... ‘The real problem with long term GSX1300R Hayabusa ownership is the quality of the finish on many components, which is poor. It rusts, it pits, it discolours its alloy, unless you really keep on top of it and clean every nook and cranny. Exhausts rot too.’ The Honda is finished wayyyy better than the first gen Suzuki. The second gen Yamaha is unfaired... not as fast as a blackbird(nice bike though). It’s not a sports tourer. The VFR non vtec is the only real competition for this besides the zx14, which is a modern bike costing thousands more... to me the bike isn’t a sports tourer. It’s a big super sports machine. I’d rather the Connie over the ZX if we are talking sports touring. Not making anything up.... I researched all of these bikes before I bought an 02 blackbird, and I couldn’t be happier. Thing is a missle, it’s comfortable and reliable. You might want to do some research and actually riding these bikes(like I did) before spouting off inaccuracies. You can like what you want, and so can I, but the XX is one of the consensus best bikes ever made. Thanks.

      Don't let people tell you to get a small bike! Get what you want, just ease your way into it! It will kill you, just gotta be easy, work your way up. get on the highway in top gear and open It up all the way, see how you like it. Slow down and drop a gear do it again, and so on. When you feel comfortable then start practicing your launches and accelerations from a stop. Go easy! A big bike is good in the turns too, less shifting you have to do, and you don't need as much power to pull you through the turn, they will slide out so a smooth right wrist will help. If you do die, remember a million other people told you not to!

    How I miss my '01 XX. For me it always looked the goods and that holds today, 10 years after I sold it *sniff*. We did many big trips together and even fully laden - 2 pax, twin tank bags, panniers and top box - she would eat the miles like she was unladen. At 5'11", it was a slight reach for me which could get a bit tiring on longer trips, but the tank bags helped with that. They also hid the speedo from the missus... hehe. :-) I have to say I was disappointed when they retired this beast. Great vid and thanks. Cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave

    had a Blackbird for a couple years and loved it. Even took it to the Bonneville Salt Flats during the Bubs Speed Week and ran the 3-mile course. I don't remember the exact speed through the traps, but as I recall it was 167.xx mph. My buddy who had his Blackbird there as well ran .02 mph slower than I did... not much, but it did give me bragging rights!! I had it faster in the asphalt, but if you've ever run a bike on sand covered concrete, that about describes Bonneville. Wheel spin at 160 mph is a little unnerving!! I've had a lot of bikes I wish I'd have kept, and the Blackbird is right up there near the top of the list!

    I've had my bird for almost 5 years now and love it, but thought I wanted something more modern. I went and rode a VFR1200F and lets just say, I was not impressed. One of the things I like the most about my BlackBird is that it does everything well. It can cruise near triple digit speeds, I can carve the river canyon like a pro, and then I can commute in Seattle traffic the next day. I don't think there is another bike out there that is as versatile, and its why I decided to begin to modernize my 99'.
    Honda, if you make another BlackBird, I will put down a deposit before its out.

    What you have to consider about the styling is that the Blackbird at the time was the first motorbike to be designed in a wind tunnel. That was the reason for the shape - and size - of the headlight, among other things. Honda wanted as little resistance as possible but as much light output as possible. That is also where the choice came from to place the indicators in the mirrors.

      Hayabusa was just discontinued. The H2 is being discontinued next year. It's not the insurance companies that are doing this. It's the high volume of accidents that makes insurance untenable and manufacturers move on to something they can sell. In a way, the very people who complain about the demise of the blackbird are the very same people who caused its demise. Even the Black Birds replacement was cancelled. The VFR1200 was cancelled. In many ways it was a superior bike abiet about 15mph slower...insurance became a nuisance because the accidents started to mount. Now...Hondas top of the line bike is the CBR 1000RR...its nice but...still under 1 liter. I'm afraid that the blackbird is gone forever. Sad.

      I would have to agree, in stock form power and speed wise the zx-11 and Blackbird are about equal. Just comes down to individual bike and rider. The bb. Is only couple of mph faster than zx11. But did that with better aerodynamics not ram air. Where the Blackbird is way better than zx11 is fit and finish, engine reliability- bb. Generally didn't blow up from oil starvation issues.. a problem All ninja engines can have!! and from 99 year on blackbirds were double more reliable by having fuel injection. The zx-11 It had crazy growling engine and feeling like you were on a rocket. But the Blackbird is better in every other possible way!! Don't get me wrong zx11 were awesome I have one!! Great power.. you have to work at it to keep from wheel on the ground! great stability.. I have ridden in 50mph hurricane crosswinds and 11. Stayed in middle Lane! Great comfort! I have ridden zx11 for 20 hours straight and felt better after riding that much, then before I got on!! If Kawasaki made new zx11 got rid of oil starvation engine issues, and made it fuel injection.. I wouldn't want anything else!! But I am sick of zx11 problems, sick of rebuilding carbs every 6 months. My next bike will be Honda Blackbird for long range reliability and comfort! Or I might get gsxr1000. Awesome power to weight, reliable, track ready : ) and surprisingly comfy for what it is. Maybe someday I will work up to busa. I love the zx12R and zx-14!! But would never have one due to reliability issues with oil starvation Kawasaki still hasn't fixed. Kawi would be my favorite bikes if they just fix oiling problems. But for a 3 grand cash used Blackbird your getting tons of reliability, great fit, finish, beauty, and class! Great comfort and 180mph bike for price of a used 600cc. You just can't beat that bang for the buck!!!

      @@danielscrittersandcycles2558 There are no oil starvation issues with the ZZR 1100. What there was was an issue on the number 3 conrod. It sometimes suffered failure due to a manafacturing misalignment. It is very rare. I have been riding ZZR 1100's since 95 and only know of one person who had this problem and his was over 100,000miles. The C model had an issue with jumping out of second gear but any still on the road will be ok. My last 8 bikes have been "Ninja's and none have suffered any problems. I also have a ZX14R and I am a member of many forums and I have never heard of any "oil starvation issues" As for Carb problems, again I dont know of any other than the normal issues with every carb bike. The Blackbird is a great bike but ensure that the main loom is ok as they have a test connector that is only used during manafacture that allows water into the loom. Often the first you know of a problem is when the dash indicator lights start misbehaving and by then it is too late and a new loom is required. All bikes have particular issues. It is just a matter of knowing what to look for.

    • @danielscrittersandcycles2558
      @danielscrittersandcycles2558 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelZZRrider . Yes there is oil starvation problems with not all but many zx-11s. Two reasons for this.. first oil pickup from oil pan area often was made with too much material to secure it and that clogged the pickup starving the engine of oil. 2ndly kawsaki was so concerned that there wouldn't be enough oil around valves, head when ridden hard that they purposely made oil return holes from head back to bottom of engine small to keep oil in head area. Problem is they did it too well, the return holes were too small and not enough oil got back down to crank area soon enough. This also caused #3 failure and more rate sometimes #4. Keep in mind these were only problems when the bike is ridden very hard and or hard for extended periods of time. Drag racing, long wheelies, top speed record breaking attempts. Under normal load the engines we're fine! I am on many forums as well. And had zx-11 for many years. Do your research and you will find out I'm right the same as what you mention could be also. I absolutely love the zx-11.!!! But they can have issues as most vehicles do. If you don't think zx-11s have oil starvation issues just call up Mr. Turbo and talk with them about it. they made oil bypass to deal with it!!

The 1100XX also looked like the ZX-11 (I actually thought it was the new ZX-11 when I first saw it). It claimed top dog status for only one year (and only by 1 mph). Then it was truly put out to pasture by the ground breaking Hayabusa.
