Why Post Malone Abandoned Hip Hop

  • Post Malone is one of the biggest stars in the world right now. But, what’s crazy is that listeners who are just discovering him at the moment might not actually know that he started out in hip-hop. After all, he hasn't collaborated with a rapper on any of his albums since 2022, nor does he step back into that world to provide many features these days or put on for new artists. Instead, he now makes country music.

looking at the fans he got and the features he got he seemed very embraced to me, its like seeing a stranger walk into your house no one is inviting but after chat you reach a point of understanding. Mack and post were the reason the hip hop fanbase has become so guarded against the outsider finding fame in it cause they dont show the genre any respect; and dont say its a race thing they did this to uzi, carti and boat too, tylor got hit too but he explained himself so the fanbase gave him a pass

That's what I feel as well, a white person rarely gets any acceptance from a black dominated genre. Even Eminem gets looked down upon by many rappers and rap fans because of his skin color. It's no surprise he'd rather switch to a white-dominated music genre

He just uses what is going viral, rap was becoming viral because of lil peep , x , juice, then when lil nas blow up with western hiphop post malone went into it too, then beyonce, give it a time, and he will switch to something else. As someone said he's culture vulture, going from this to this. Anyway peoples seems to love to call charistmatic and good actors "good peoples" If you want to know how good peoples are, do a check on AMy winehouse, they put her to her coffin, was a good person and vulnerable, and no one cared for her. Don't come with "they cared" if they did she was alive, she needed a frend to help her out.

He started off wanting to do country music. Same with Taylor Swift. Miley was also pushed as r&b when she wanted to break away from the Hannah Montana image. Many artists are pushed as r&b when they first break out. The labels push for what is more popular. Pink is another example. Research is key.

Beyoncé released a wildly popular and critically acclaimed Electronic Dance album and most of the criticism against ‘Renaissance’ came from Black Americans online saying it was _“h&M music”_ or they _“didn’t like house”_ or _“why can’t she do an other R&B album like self-titled?”_ - nobody complained about Beyonce venturing into a new genre more than those Black Americans online. Drake fans did the same when he released “Honestly Nevermind”. Hip-hop really doesn’t show much love to people who come up in the genre but make it big outside of it. Instead, the community often labels them as culture vultures.
It’s wild, though-nobody cared when Wayne dropped a rock album, Snoop went reggae, Nelly crossed over to pop, or Queen Latifah started singing jazz. Why? Because they didn’t blow up from those moves.
Were they wrong for trying? Not at all. They’re artists, after all; they need to explore and feed that creative itch. Did they all do it purely out of love for their art? Maybe, maybe not. But sometimes artists just need something new to get their creative spark back.

I feel that once you start in hip-hop you can’t go back. It’s like you’re imprisoned to use this style until you die. It seems that you can’t do other types of music. Once a rapper, always a rapper. You can’t evolve artistically. Imagine if you had to keep the same job all your life.
I’ve been a hip-hop fan since childhood but i’m not listening to it 24/7. I have to listen to other genres and if I was doing music i would love to explore other genres, do a jazz album or a rock album, but if i got famous from rap i couldn’t?
Post’s favorite lyricist and artist is Young Thug that doesn’t sound like someone who doesn’t like hip-hop would say. It’s not a rapper for “white people” like g-eazy, macklemore or eminem for example.
Oh and if you can’t do something because the color of your skin, that’s called racism. *Post Malone is a POP artist,* he just isn't the conventional cookie-cutter Pop star so y'all had difficulty recognising him as one. In hindsight we can say he's undoubtedly a Pop star and genre chameleon just like Rihanna was. Rihanna came in on the early 00s Dancehall trend w/ the explosion of Sean Paul, then switched to R&B working with Ne-Yo by the mid 00's, by the early 10's she'd switched to EDM working with Calvin Harris & David Guetta, when pop trends shifted again in the mid 10's towards trap beats she worked with Travis Scott etc. *When trends move, Pop artists move* - Don't hate the player, that's the game. You keep up with trends or get left behind. MJ and Madonna continuously did this over decades to keep their new releases relevant.
*Hip-Hop & Trap production **_was_** the Pop music of the late 2010's,* so common sense capitalism dictates that many artists would tap into the sound to be as relevant as possible. *That's not being a vulture, it's just the music business* - if that makes you mad, blame capitalism. Taylor Swift & Ariana Grande were pretty much rapping on Trap production in the late-2010s and collaborating with rappers like Future & Nicki Minaj, and it made them neither Hip-Hop artists nor vultures for tapping into those sounds. The tough pill to swallow for hip-hop fans is that Pop artists *DON'T* have to write a dissertation, or eat, sleep, and breathe hip-hop in order to make a hit record within the spirit of the genre.
Today, Hip-Hop is losing steam it had commercially in the 2020's while Country music is exploding, so here comes multiple artists with their shiny rebrand & Country-leaning singles/albums to show they're still tapped into the current moment. It's nothing personal. It's just the business of Pop music. The hip-hop fans who are salty, are venting their resentment and frustration, because it's far easier for white artists to be genre chameleons than black artists: who perpetually get boxed-into Hip-Hop and R&B, whether they choose to experiment or not.

As an American, there’s Americans here and African Americans. If you’re Chinese Russian even from kenya you’re just an American. If you’re a black American and you think you have the power to give “passes” to people who use your “culture”, are the people who keep all the race bullshit alive

Oof. This is a very dangerous mindset. Do you believe that JUST because you are from the outside of America that you have a better understanding of race. One thing that should be made clear is that this is AMERICAN MUSIC. Rap was made in America in NY in the 70s. Another problem with what you said is that race was never an issue. You’d understand that if you watched the video. THEIR IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RACE & CULTURE. Unfortunately tho, race and culture are USUALLY very closely tied. The problem wasn’t that posty is white. The problem is that he continued to disrespect & degrade the very genre that made him… or at the very least allowed him to build his initial buzz. Please widen your view of race and culture as your mindset is very dangerous… especially to people of color like myself. You said that because you don’t live in America, your view of race is not at the forefront of your judgment… but then bottled down the ENITRE video, to a race video…. Please get help and reevaluate things.

I think everyone has it the other way around. Post Malone genuinely loved hip hop and loved being a rapper. However, he knew as a white person, he was never going to be accepted into hip hop. That's why he transitioned to other genres since they accept him for his skin color whereas hip hop does not

I think it is weird how some of these people treat Hip-hop as more of a cult. Like pretty much bullying Post into keeping him in hip-hop. The guy always said he had love for country music and he clearly has a thing for rock as well. He isn't going to want to spend his entire career in just hip-hop. I respect him for sticking to his guns and making the music he wants to make. He won't be wondering at the end of his journey "what if"
The are plenty of artists in other genres that freely experiment with their sound and try new things but when it comes to hip-hop the bigger voices are gate keepers that will drag anyone's name for releasing an album that strays from hip-hop.
He will probably explore more sounds in other albums and even release new hip-hop tracks.
Hip-hop is just full of dictators that will blacklist you for wanting to contribute to more than just one sound.

I think the record needs to be set straight that Hip Hop and Rap are 2 different things. Rap is part of hip hop, but just because you Rap doesn't make you Hip hop.
If that was the case, we should have a "why Hip hop doesn't respect Weird Al Yankovic". Post rapped, but he never struck me as a hip hop artist. Likewise, I don't think just because he had a country twang in his music or moved more into that genre casted him out. Lots of artists incorporated country sound into rap. Most notable example for me is Nelly. First song I think of when I remember him is "Take a ride with me". Hell. Bone Thugz N Harmony had "Ghetto Cowboy" in the 90s.
Hell. I remember a lot of rap in the 2000s had a lot of rock in it. Lil Wayne damn near transitioned into rock and was even playing guitar in a handful of songs at one point. Was Lil Wayne no longer a rapper or hip hop? Jay Z did collabs with rock. Ludacris did collabs with rock. Nearly everyone in that time was doing collabs with rock.
The problem is 2 things. 1) Every keeps trying to make rap and hip hop the same thing; they arent. 2) People convently forgot how diverse the music used to be and are trying to now put it in this little box. For what? And social media has only aggravated the issue
