Death of a Music Stand is a legendary one act play. One line goes, Asher to Lee,"If it was easy, I wouldn't have called you." Linda is beautiful, uber talented, and courageous. Not fearless, but courageous. Pirates, working with Nelson Riddle, and the Mexican music caused consternation to executives, and she killed in every effort. She actually took voice lessons to be better. There won't be another like her in our lifetime. Love and Thanks ❤👍❤👍
Thank you, Lee for bringing this to us. Linda really knocked it out of the park in that soprano aria. She has always found interesting projects that would be a good fit for her talents and go in different musical directions. As listener we never know enough about what it takes to bring us the music.
"Poor Wandering One" is so beautiful musically but those long arpeggios were played for comedy with Rex Smith, attempting to get a word in edge wise. Minor roles in the movie were miming to a recording of the Broadway production. I guess the version of Estelle Parsons singing "Oh, False One, You Have Deceived Me!" comes from that Broadway recording. Angela Lansbury sang and performed the role, in the movie. George Rose was the Major General in both the movie and on Broadway. Tony Azito is the Sergeant, in both, he is the lead voice on the last song in this video.
I was fortunate to have seen Joni, Janice, Grace, Joan, and a handful of others in their prime, but my biggest regret was not getting my sorry ass to see Linda. Back when, I did not appreciate her virtuosity and sort of brushed her off as just Stone Pony pop. It took me to being blown away by What's New to revisit her work. I now consider Linda to be one of the greatest all genre singers of the 70s to 2000s. I rate some of her albums such as Heart Like A Wheel or What's New to be perfect in that I wouldn't change a note, song or arrangement. Even though she no longer sings, she's still a presence and influence for many contemporary female artists. I love Linda and hope she feels the love of her many fans every day.
Modern Major General is the one of greatest songs EVER! I love this play/ movie. There is a video on YT with the original cast Kevin and Linda starring. Its fantastic! Shows the xylophone player absolutely ripping it during the MMG song. Thanks Le!

What I remember is carrying the books for double bass, tuba, trombone, bassoon, and piano and then doubling the baritone lead on "With Catlike Tread." Years later, much to my delight, both of my kids whould sing the role of the Major General! And if you didn't know, according to Aaron Sorkin, "They're all about duty."
Thanks Lee..Linda, is indeed, very special...❤ My old English father-in-law would have loved it!! Was a great oficionado..with Gilbert & Sullivan..Put on many plays in London.
Thank you for your versatility. Gilbert and Sullivan were noted for their patter songs (the faster, the better) and "major-general" is classic. It is great to celebrate and respect pure musicianship. Sad that Ronstadt became ill. She probably could have continued for a bit, but her standards were so high as a musician she couldn't just phone it in.
Love this, and Linda & Gail in the same week getting me to sing along, and try to keep my voice still working on top of the revving up of everything else, that definitely needs the rhythm section to reanimate me, every groundhog day, which is every day! All this and a magic bon bon is needed, every time. ❤Thank you Leland❣️
I first learned of Linda’s portrayal of the female lead in Pirates early in 1991. I was eleven at the time, and the drama society at the high school I would eventually suffer through four years attending was staging Pirates as its spring musical. It knocked my socks off to learn that she had this additional capability, to sing and act operatically. Subsequently, I learned that a friend of mine, Larry Spivack, had a hand in helping orchestrate the revival that Linda participated in and chose some of the instruments that were played. Subsequent to that time, I discovered that the soundtrack was produced by Peter Asher and that he was the producer for most of Linda‘s works. As it turns out, one of them, *Cry like a Rainstorm, Howl like the Wind,* is my favorite of hers, and it also happens to be one of the records on with you played bass, Leland.

Having flashbacks - the scariest thing I’ve ever done (musically) was to say ‘yes’ to playing bass in the pit for an original musical a year or 2 ago. The composer/MD assured me it wasn’t too demanding and there were only a dozen songs w/bass. There were 48 pages of bass clef not for a bassist but for the left hand of a pianist. 2/3s of the score was 4+ lines below the bass clef! Struggled through the rehearsals and the opening night and eventually settled in for the remaining shows. Many bullets were sweated! Hadn’t thought about this in ages, and seeing the look on your face describing your experience brought it all back to me. We should both have an ‘I survived a musical’ badge…
