Used this technique for my kitchen remodel. I tore out a plaster board wall, and did this work. No dust in the rest of the house and a happy wife. Thanks for the tip.
Great tip to control dust. I would like to suggest that buying a cheap furnace filter to trap the dust would be a good addition this way you won't be blowing dirt all over the outside of the house or someone elses house. Another good idea for the cold air and heat registers is to buy cheese cloth and cover the vents with it. This will allow air to continue to move freely without any restrictions.
Unfortunately cheese cloth does not stop drywall dust form passing through it. Neither does a furnace filter. I am not concerned about the neighbors as this causes a lot less duct than road maintenance.
I wish the previous video referenced was listed in the description. A quick look at older videos and I didn't see it (could have just missed it). I want the dramatic expense.
This might be a dumb question, but is there any way to apply this in a home that is already dusty? I assume you'd have to kick up the dust that's settled, but i couldn't find any discussion about it.
Came across your channel and love it! I'm looking to turn a 6' wide x 2' deep closet into a powercarving, lathe & sanding tent. My new jewelry studio/wood & lapidary shop is an attached 175 sq ft self contained casita. I did have a 690 sq ft shop but needed to be closer to family. I've seen dust and paint booths 3mil plastic with pvc. I was thinking clear shower curtains sewn together to make as a more permanent material and pvc pipe. I'm just not sure how to set it up where it can also be rolled up on the walls on each side and top or velcro around the opening and some sort of stand on each side that can give it support and velcro to it for the sides and create an entrance with a zipper. Do you think creating an air vent with a desk top cooler would be good for air and cooling? Plus I'd like to enlarge the tent 2' out to give me enough room to work but unfortunately it has to be collapsible since it next to my shop entrance. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated bc I now live in a small subdivision in the desert so all work must be done inside. Sincerely, Raven K. W. U.S.A.F
Your very helpful. Planning a kitchen tile project. Wondering how long heavy fridge and hutch can be put on tile after installing. 12x24 tiles. Will be a pain to be out a kitchen for a long time.
Really Informative videos. Is there a specific type of air mover I should be looking at that would handle drywall dust? Maybe something with a sealed moter and bearings? Or would a cheap one used for drying carpet hold up well? I would like to incorporate this system for my Reno's keeping the dust down is critical to so many costumers.
We do this type of thing with ventilating PC gaming computers: 1 Make the clean part of the house a positive air pressure space- pump air into the clean area. 2 Make the dirty area of the house a negative air pressure space- do not pump air into this area at all [or you can pump air out] 3 Now air will flow from the clean section of the house, into the dirty area where you are working. This way, any dust created in the dirty work area of the house, will never travel through the plastic into the clean area, because the dust would always be blown back into the dirty area. Also, your fans will not become dirty as fast because they are pumping clean air, not dirty air. [Fan] -----air flow---->> [Clean area of house] ----natural air flow---->> [Dirty contruction area with dust] ----dust blown out of house---->> [Outdoors]
Thanks for this video, I'm a new subscriber! Just one question: you mentioned that you'd add a link to the actual reno project where you used this setup. Couldn't find this link ... unless it's been removed? Could you please provide it? :-) thanks.
CURIOUS? What are the vertical yellow poles? Brand? Tho not mentioned in the video, they appear to be part of the overall enclosure set up? Thx for the great video and being so responsive to all the public questions!! Awesome!
A cool trick if you don't have the ducting is just use the fan in the slider window and stuff a blanket next to it. You can hang the fan with all round strapping from the plumbing dept.
The other benefit to contractors with the plastic wall, it keeps out kids and pets and grandparents and creates a space where the client needs permission to enter. This can also be a paid for service on a larger scale.
Hey just a question about basement insulation here in Ottawa. I heard I don't need a vapour barrier if I put 2 inch rigid styro flat against the concrete. Then frame my 2x4 wall infront of that ( filling in the 16 or 24 inch on centre gaps with bat insulation of course)????
If that was the intent then you have the vapor seal on the wrong side of the insulation in the winter. If you use both with no air space you will run into problems down the road.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY love the channel but I think your wrong on this one . This here is straight from nrcan.gc.ca: 6.2.4 Frame wall with batt insulation and rigid board insulation This method involves gluing rigid board insulation to the foundation wall and then covering it with a frame wall incorporating batt insulation. The result is higher insulation values with less loss of interior space, a very good reduction of thermal bridging and no need for an additional moisture barrier. Using rigid board insulation with at least R-10 (2"), secure and seal it to the foundation by applying foam-compatible adhesive around the perimeter of the foam board before fastening it to the wall. The frame wall can now be roughed in for any wiring and plumbing and insulated as noted previously in Section 6.2.3, Frame wall with single or double layer of batt insulation. Do not use a polyethylene air and vapour barrier with this approach, as there is a risk of creating a double vapour barrier with the foam board.
I really like this idea because the 99.9% mask tends to make my lungs work hard over a full days work. What size of unit would do the trick for a regular sized room in a residence?
Im on my 31st yr of construction and have never stopped learning. Thanks for your channel as ive picked up many helpful tips!
You and me both. Materials and codes and techniques change faster each year then every 10 years when we got started.
Used this technique for my kitchen remodel. I tore out a plaster board wall, and did this work. No dust in the rest of the house and a happy wife. Thanks for the tip.
You should filter your exhaust air depending on how hazardous the dust is.
This principal is how I kept from getting buster for smoking pot in my dorm room. Negative pressure, it works.
One of the best renovation, remodel chanel out there
Max and I tend to agree, It is a shame there isn't more.
Great Hack; works every time! I use a 20 inch square fan I bought used for 25$.
Great job!
Great tip to control dust.

Great channel!! Thank you very much 🙂 do you have a link to the plastic duct work?
Awesome idea! I’m going to try this out during my kitchen re-model.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Oh Lord, my problem too! I feel like we're remodeling King Tut's Tomb, after that Sand Mummy thing went berserk in the living room ...
Hi, I would like to know the equipments used in the video
Good step-by-step video. Very helpful.
Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
Best dust prevention is to use a negative air scrubber with lay flat not an air mover....
Man Jeff, I wish you lived by me. I've never encountered a contractor with your skills and care.
Thank you. I am sure they are out there.

Thats a great idea. I dread tearing out drywall and making a dusty mess. Thanks for sharing
Your welcome. It has been used in the mold remediation industry for years. We just decided to apply it to dust control as well.
Your very helpful. Planning a kitchen tile project. Wondering how long heavy fridge and hutch can be put on tile after installing. 12x24 tiles. Will be a pain to be out a kitchen for a long time.
That would depend on your flooring assembly. Good practice is 3 days but I would read the specs on the products you are using.
Home RenoVision DIY Thank you.
Great Video as Usual Sir!
Thanks Todd, Good to hear from you again.
Hey its me.. again ! Yes I'm going to comment every video;)
LOL, In a perfect world everyone would Kevin, Appreciate the comments my friend. Cheers!
Home RenoVision DIY cheers

the carpet air movers work well. You need to clean the fins after the job however.
Home RenoVision DIY thank you for the reply! Keep up the awesome video's!

Where do you buy the air ducts? And BTW, I purchased the 360 sander after one of your videos using the sander. This thing is great! Thank you
I go to my local restoration specialist store where you casn buy everything related to flood restoration and mold remediation.
Thank you
I want to learn how to read a blue print. Can you do a video on that. Keep the good work nice channel.
This is something a night class at the local college can teach you.

That is correct fred. the video is now on our new channel Reality Renovision. You will see a picture of stand alone tub . that is the one. Cheers!

I found them at the depot. used to hold up the plastic sheet.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thank You for your time and suggestion!! Paul
Where is all the dust going? Out the window and through the open window of the neighbors?
What about a 20’ tall ceiling ?
Really cool system... I need to get me a set up like that... you think Home Depot would have it...
Hey Ray they definitely sell the fans or Air Movers as they like to call them. They rent them as well.
A cool trick if you don't have the ducting is just use the fan in the slider window and stuff a blanket next to it. You can hang the fan with all round strapping from the plumbing dept.
That is cool.. I like to keep things clean so I don't have clean a big mess... save time on cleaning and can use more of that time to remodel.

Whoever told you that is incorrect! code in all of Ontario requires a super six poly whenever you use batt insulation.
Home RenoVision DIY thanks the reasoning I was told was....the rigid XPS styro acts as the vapour barrier .
If that was the intent then you have the vapor seal on the wrong side of the insulation in the winter. If you use both with no air space you will run into problems down the road.

Yea man I'm wondering too
I think this is good for homes built after 1980. Older than that and you are potentially polluting the outside with lead. Great videos though.
What if you don’t have a window?
Are you in front of a green screen? Maybe it's just the lighting, it makes it look like you're not really there! haha
No,lol just a sunny day!
Is it smarter to do jobs by yourself to earn more money or with a team?
depends on how expensive the team is!
Thats a nice blower.i want one lol
Ridgid sells on at the home depot.
I like the set-up, but don't think it's a good idea to use the bathroom vent for dust.
Just an option for home owners doing a small remodel.
True, true !
it is actually so simple I kinda feel stupid I haven't done that before lol
It is amazing when a client has had renovations before , the first thing they notice is how clean everything is.
