    1:50 Hey! I’m one of the people that use the basic rules!
    So I knew very little about Heroscape until I stumbled upon the booth at GenCon 24, played a quick match and then bought the Wellspring box. My son just turned 5 and he’s LOVING the game! We play atleast once a week. The basic rules lets him play an otherwise inaccessible tabletop miniatures game. Since he can’t read yet, but can understand the basic stats. It’s been a bit of a stepping stone into more complex games I intend to introduce to him in future.
    Needless to say, without the basic rule set, I wouldn’t have become a Heroscape fan
    I know my experience is just a single example. But I really do value the basic level rule set. It’s a great stepping stone into the “real” game. And as we know, die hard fans can’t keep a product alive. There has to be onboarding by new players too!

    Really loving the photos you’re getting here! I don’t know much about heroscape but it’s refreshing to see videos on tabletop games that aren’t a guy in a dimly lit basement rambling unscripted while fidgeting with figures at his desk.

    1:50 this first cut from the HEROSCAPE CARDS to the "lego" Slugger made me wish you had a Slugger hero character or squad of them.
    It would be fun to see what abilities you chose to give the Slugger hero and seeing the card art and model on board, but i see how making that would take time and money.

    Great video! I could see this channel becoming the perfect guide for new Heroscape players to understand the game, keep it up! :) I also learnt something new from this, I’ve always treated common squads/heroes as having to each have their own separate cards per figures on the card, like the uncommon ones, and not one card for all of them. That will be a game changer next time I play 😅

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! Indeed, I always used to play with as many cards as I had common figures on the field. Only with getting back into the game in the last 5 years have I truly appreciated the power of common heroes/squads. They're really cool figures!

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@minerman60101 You can only rotate them on *your* turn, so that offers some limitations. It's still pretty fiddly, though - drawing line of sight is a necessary part of Heroscape, but can occasionally lead to disputes.
      I've definitely played with a house rule before where if more than half of a figure is obscured, they get an extra defence die; it's similar to how 3/4 cover works in D&D 5e.

    I only had the first two Master Sets as a kid, so Uncommon Heroes were completely new to me. Heck, I don't think I ever encountered a Common Hero as a kid! I'm not offended by them; they work quite a bit like Warhammer Independent Characters, which you can have multiple off with their own Wounds counters.
    Multi wound squads, though, feel like putting a round peg into a square hole. I get the idea, and in Warhammer they work due to the way that squad cohesion and damage allocation rules are designed, but Heroscape lacks both of those, so I can see it becoming very difficult. I'll have to see about playing with the friend I used to game with if we end up picking those up.

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, multi-life squads don't involve putting stickers on your cards (unlike Uncommon Heroes), so they get a bit of a pass for me; that doesn't mean they aren't clunky, though. The only real solace with them though is that they're rare right now and limited to a pair of Unique Squads.
      If we start seeing multi-life *Common* Squads though, then we're in for some real trouble. 😬

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@leiagelwasser2168 Pretty much, yeah. You need some way to indicate which figure belongs to which card when dealing with Uncommon Heroes, and I'm too much of a coward to use a Sharpie. 😬
      The saving grace is that if you only use 1 copy of an Uncommon Hero in your army, you don't need to do this, and several of the Uncommon Heroes don't gain much from drafting multiples of them anyways.
      They honestly just should have been released as Unique Heroes, if you ask me. 🤷

    Well from my experience with warhammer 40,000 & Dungeons and Dragons you simply choose which model unit to act & what action such as an attack then choose the model unit you are going to attack & you & your opponent player do battle after the resolve is when wound lands &/or misses. To make it work & keep it simple place the wound marker next to the model unit.

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That practice could work for wounds on Uncommon Heroes, (rather than marking stickers and cards) - the only problem is that the Order Marker system of Heroscape requires activating specific figures via cards, meaning that you'd *still* have to mark the figures and cards anyways so they could clearly indicate which Order Marker was on which unit.
      Uncommon Heroes just add an extra layer of messiness to the game. Like I said in the video though, hopefully we saw the last of them with D&D..!

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      They work perfectly! The Unique designation only means that you can't have another figure with the same name within your army. You can have multiple *different* Unique Heroes or Squads, just not 2 of the same. 🙂

    Great video Slug! One thing Heroscape has brought to my attention is the problem of if more is really better?
    I know the idea has been thrown out about whether or not 3-4 tile based figures should ever exist, but honestly I've grown to love the peanut base being the max because i feel as though there is more creativity in the limitation especially for posing characters. Take Wu-sag-nah for example: a Giant Snake figure that should normally be stupidly long is coiled up perfectly in a striking position, or the Iron Lich balancing its 4 legs on two tiles, all those figures could be posed on a larger base, but they aren't and have been cleverly posed to accommodate.
    In the same way I'm not sure how I feel about having 5 figures in a squad or multiple lives for squads either, it might be really cool, but I also am worried that will make some of the original squads no longer viable anymore. I've always felt the one-life system for squads always felt like it was intrinsic to the nature of being a squad figure, the price payed for being able to move and attack multiple times. But i guess time will tell.
    Looking forward to the next video!

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I couldn't agree more! I have similar reservations... however, I always remind myself that Heroscape has some of the lowest power creep out of any game that has survived as long as it has. To this day, some of the best heroes and squads can be found in that original master set. I think the designers learned very quickly what was and was not too powerful to put into the game, (at least until they designed Isamu lol).
      Multi-life squads could definitely become problematic if they ever became Common, but the Unique status is a good way to cap off the potential power level of anything implemented in the game. Imagine if the Krav Maga Agents or Marro Warriors were Common, for instance. 😬
      We'll have to wait and see, I guess!

    • @noahthonnard293
      @noahthonnard293 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@slugscaper A fair point. Historically the power creep has been at a minimum, and figures like ROTV Raelin and Krav Mega are strong, but ultimately still beatable with the right counters (praise Queen Braxis and Krug!) lol I guess I'm a bit of a pessimist at heart, but I'm honestly just very happy heroscape is back at all!

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@noahthonnard293 I still think it's fair to have a bit of skepticism - this is a new design team, and it's entirely possible that they'll jump the shark. I'm keeping an optimistic view, but only time will tell. Still, it is pretty cool to be able to speculate about new Heroscape releases again!
