QRP + Hustler Whip = Big Mistake? Winter Field Day 2025

- Winter Field Day 2025 gave me an ideal opportunity to test the effectiveness of the Hustler mobile ham radio 20m whip with a QRP rig, my Icom IC-705. Join me as I see how this antenna performs under difficult conditions.
Well done. I operate from the car a lot in the winter since it's quick & easy and I usually don't have much time play radio.
Thanks, Mike!
Looks like you had a great WFD. Mobile whips work very well. From a location in the Atlanta area, I worked BC on a 20 meter whip. It was amazing, and I had only my vehicle as a counterpoise.
Great contact! I didn't manage to make any contacts with the west coast.
You’re hard core being out there in that weather! Congrats on a mobile Field Day! Especially QRP!
Thanks, Chris! Take care and stay warm.
Another great one Tracy! Not sure what the was funnier, the "wussie" comment right out of the box or confirming my belief that the only difference between 5W and 10W is Psychological!
😂 thanks, Chris! Hope people who read this go check out your channel.
Tim's videos are a great source of inspiration, indeed!
100% agreed!
Wow Tracy, you are hardcore radio amateur - this was a brillliant video. I always enjoy your videos, but this was a brilliant one - thank you so much for going out in such cold conditions and showing what can be done with a QRP radio and whip! 73 2E0FWE
Thank you, Alan! 73 from VE3TWM.
There is nothing like age to convince a man that making things easier is a good idea. 🙂
I would still like to try using a 40 meter hamstick as a 20 meter EFHW. It gets rid of the mess of the radials
Good point, Todd! I'm intrigued by your 20m EFHW idea...
Looks like you had a lot of fun!
Sure did! Thanks for the inspiration and motivation, Tim.
Great video. I prefer Hustler to hamsticks. You can install multiple resonators on a single mast to get more bands. During solar minimum I tested Hustler along with WSPR and I was able to get to UK on 20mW using exactly the same magnet mounted antenna.
Thanks, Tom! That was an impressive test.
Your video made me realize that I can participate for a couple of hours and that is OK. For some reason I had it my mind that I had to be there at least half a day or it would be a failure. Enjoyed your video. Thank you.
You sure can and the ops you make a contact with will appreciate you being there for them. See you out there next year!
Hello Tracey,
Great fun indeed, and you were ready to face the worst snow storm, with all the stock you had in the car. Hi!
Anyway, I used the hustler antenna for years and believe me it works very well, exactly like any hamstick antennas, or outbacker.-
Exception for Buddipole antenna , because I can make any vertical full size, well ajusted, with the analyser.
This way I can compare 2 verticals ex: Hamstick VS Hustler, or VS full lenght Buddipole vertical antenna. with a 2 positions switch
and playing antenna no 1 & ant no 2.
Here at home I have around my lot a "CHAIN LINK FENCE" , total lenght is 187 feet, so it is a very nice place to experiment
those verticals antenna in many ways. By the way no need of external counterpoise, the fence do the job .-
If at home you do not have a " CHAIN LINK FENCE" you sure find one somewhere in some park , and this way you should be able to
make those tests.
Why 187 ft, it is total lenght, but in fact my lot is only 43 ft wide and 70 ft long each side of the lot, but this lot is at the back of the house.
Also I can make for exemple, 2 phased vertical antenna and test with a single one to see the difference with signal reports , AMAZING!!!
It is all explained in the famous book of "ED.NOLL" W3FQJ (SK), 73 Vertical Beam Triangle Antennas,
if you want the book I can send it to you in PDF format.-
Do not forget, have fun everyday Hi! Hi!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience, Mike! If you wouldn't mind sending me that PDF I'd appreciate it. 72 from VE3TWM.
Great effort Tracy. I am going to concentrate much more with QRP over the next couple of years while were at the hump of the cycle.
Hi, Colin! Always nice to hear from you. Now's the time for sure.
Thank you for another great video Tracy. What a nice setup for mobile. 73
Thank you, Sean! 73 from VE3TWM.
Hi Tracy been pota ing the last two days in the car been in the 20’s f but at least like you say I’ve been getting out of the shack and on the air 73 Tracy, looking forward to working you again.
Great job and 73 from VE3TWM!
Looks like you had fun Tracy. I went out with my new club (just moved) and we set up in the park not far from my house here in TX. The wind was very cold and we ran tarps all around the park's pavilion. We had a county judge and the park ranger who ran the park visit us and also the head of the emergency services come out with a Telecom trailer that is fully set up. The EOC guy was testing the trailer and thought this whole be a good test. We ran both Saturday all day and Sunday. Just had a wire in a tree with a tuner. Had a blast. We ran 1 Oscar.
Great job, Don! Thanks for the report.
I worked 10 m on a homemade dipole in the backyard. Pretty cold for a Virginia winter. Great video. Inspiring.
Well done!
Hi Tracy,
If you have more than one Hustler resonator, Hustler has a mast multi band adapter to mount three resonators on one mast to allow changing to three bands. Worked very well when I had resonators for 20 40 80 in a dipole configuration on my crank-up tower. The 40 and 80 resonators had limited bandwidth but could use the internal tuner to double that. I was nursing a cranky heating boiler and missed WFD. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Hi Don, thanks for the tip! I'll get one of those. Good luck with the boiler. 73 from VE3TWM.
Nice video 👍
Thanks, Ape!
Good Video well done tis still winter over here in the North East England where its cold and Damp Shiver mi Timber Brrr. I have several Hustler Resonators with the Extention mast (54inch) had good success inland on fields also on the coast too. Prefer to use an Icom IC 706 MK2G QRP power with that ability to increase power output when needed. Transsmitted both SSB and Data on 20m with success.
On ocassions I use my 12meter Spiderbeam secured to a fence post with a 9:1 unun. Love getting out away from my home QTH into the fresh air . 73 Keith M0KLL IO94GV Sunderland England.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Keith! 73 from VE3TWM.
Another good video. 73, Brian VE3GUE
Thank you, Brian! 73 from VE3TWM.
Do you pass through highway 11 on occasion. I could swear I saw your car today southbound I believe between Barrie and Orillia. I did not have radio on board as I was a passenger in a friend's truck, I know shame on me. Thought it worth a check.73 from VA3DBL
I love driving north, but that wasn't me. 73 from VE3TWM!
Given the difference in weather, I think any station operating outside in Canada should get a multiplier.
I like that idea 😀
As a cw ragchew guy, I find those qso's very ! Not sure how to describe it. 73 Tracy.
Yes, it's a completely different mindset. 73 Brian!
I dis somthing very similar. Qrp cw with hamstick, magmount on the hood of my Santa Fe. Made 45 contacts with little effort. I would like to hear more about your experience with the Hustler whips vs Hamstick. I'm gg to try the counterpoise idea too from the car. BRIAN VE3GMZ
Good job with the hamstick, Brian! More to come on Hustler vs. Hamstick.
Tried the counterpoise with a hamstick on a magmount and added a ferrite core to the feed line. Very big improvement!
You're not a wimp. Only a case of good sense.
Thanks, Philip!
I loved my Hustler, sold it for something else and regret it
I see them around a lot at hamfests selling for good prices. Get another set?
