A bit random starting point for this tour 2:50 Paushuize, or Pope's house. Built for the only dutch pope Adrianus (who never lived here) although the germans see him as a german pope because it was during the Holy Roman Empire. This pope used to be the tutor to Charles V, the king of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor, in his younger years. Son of a carpenter, destined for greatness in the church. Before he became pope he was Regent of Spain on behalf of Charles who had become emperor. 8:29 Backside of the Kappitelzaal where the Union of Utrecht (1579) was signed in oposition to king Fillips II of spain son of Charles V, Birthplace of the Netherlands as a state 37:10 The "old" Tivoli concert venue. Started as a monastery, got converted to an orphanage when the existing one was bombarded during the siege of Vredenburg Castle (1576) 52:48 If you go into this ally and walk to the other side of the church and look up you can see 2 canonballs stuck in the masonry. Citizins carried cannons up high buildings to shoot at the castle and the castle obviously shot back. 53:26 This is the "Choorstraat" which translates to Choir Street, because to tore down the choir of the church to make place for merchants. In the pavement to the left you can see a stone to commemorate Suster Bertken, a anchorite, who lived there when the choir was still present. 57:21 Bart, a friend of mine 😅 1:02:04 Statue of Jan van Nassau, younger brother of Willem van Oranje, chief negotiator of the Union of Utrecht 1:02:15 Front of the Kappitelzaal with a newer facade 1:22:00 Death wish, walking on a cycle path😬 1:39:25 To the right again the church that got it's choir chopped off 1:46:40 If you continue on this street you get to the Vredenburg Square, the square and the mall used to be the castle. Vredenburg translates to peace castle, a castle to keep the city at peace (under controle) It was commisioned by Charles V in 1527, completed in 1532, besieged in 1576 and demolished by the citizens what took until 1581. Despite only being there for some 50 years centuries ago it still bears the name. 1:51:40 the old looking tower in the back is part of Oudaen, a city castle also used to shoot at the spanish castle 1:53:10 a better view of Oudaen
(8:42) (1:04:14) The Romanesque Cathedral of S. Martin, Utrecht, was burnt in 1253 and the present church started the following year. The nave collapsed in 1674, separating the singe west tower from the choir and transept. The choir is a simplification of Cologne (cathedral)- the dominant influence in the lower Rhineland when Utrecht was being built. The fourteenth century tower has the open work octagon which first appeared at Freiburg in Breisgau (c. 1300) and was itself the source for the west front towers of Cologne (cathedral). The tower of Utrecht, which is 115 m (384 ft) high, was celebrated throughout the Low Countries. It can also be recognised in the Van Eyck painting of the Holy Lamb, at Ghent.
The namesake of the Cathedral also gave the city it's coat of arms. It's a shield diagonally devided in red and white. The red for half the coat he donated to a begger. He couldn't give the whole coat because a half part belonged to the Roman empire, half was his own.
A wonderful display of the best places in this wonderful city.

Used to go to classes at around the entrance at 2:00. A serene location of the city, which my words cannot sufficiently describe.
