Welcome back! "Vision" is part 2 of the Apocalypse trilogy. I believe they are showing us the perspective from the future in this series, showing us how the earth looks like when we keep acting like we do. While "Maison" was talking about the destruction of the environment, here they seem to be talking about the destruction due to war. I don't know if that was the idea from the beginning, but Putin's aggression definitely played a role here. In one set they even dance in front of what looks sort of like a huge trident, which is the coat of arms of Ukraine (could be a coincidence though, or this is me seeing things). It is easy to see how the conflict in Ukraine could result in global destruction. It's just a push of a button away. Note that Dami presses a launch button, but it's not for nukes. It's for spreading their message, their vision. Peace. To be heard all around the world. The song is also a call for action, to stand together against aggressors and those who are destroying the planet out of greed. There is not much difference between someone leading an army or a corporation, if the result is destruction. Still, Dami said the intention is to resolve the problems in a peaceful way. So, what do we do? There is no easy answer. Dami has an outfit that shows that perfectly. One half is an innocent bridal dress, the other half is simply badass. What I know is that any aggressor only listens to very limited diplomacy, and they need to know that the good in the world is ready and willing to fight them if needed. Whoever the aggressor is, we are more than them. They need to know they will never succeed, the only option is peace. By the way, my interpretation could be completely wrong, any other theory is perfectly valid as well. Musically, it's heavier than Maison, and I feel it fits the subject matter very well. It sounds aggressive and heavy, but also soft and vulnerable. There is the duality again. And I love the fake keychange at the end of the chorus, the crazy bass and the guitar in the bridge. All in all this is a fantastic release! "Maison" is part 1 of the Apocalypse trilogy. Dreamcatcher are touching on a very important subject here. Maison is French for "house" or rather "home", and they are singing about everyone's home, which is our planet. Previously they talked about online hate, now they are tackling an issue that impacts the whole planet and therefore everyone. Climate change is going to affect all of us, and it is already affecting many people. Island Nations will disappear under the ocean ("Save my home in the ocean"). Ice melts in the arctic and displaces people ("Save my home in the polar"). Forests get decimated by corporate greed and habitats get destroyed ("Save my home in the jungle") and disappearing glaciers and snow packs result in even less water for deserts ("Save my home in the desert"). People have a natural tendency to ignore issues that seem to be in the future - but climate change is here, right now. We can't wait anymore, and it is good that Dreamcatcher use their platform to promote change: "Break your habit now!" Musically I really enjoy the song. Like in BEcause, the rock/metal vibe is dialed back a bit, but it is still there and highly distorted. Although the more I listen to it, the more Rock I hear. I especially like how the pre-chorus and chorus seems to appear out of nowhere, the chord progression in the bridge, and the epic end part. The bass line is crazy as well. LEEZ and Ollounder (their producers) have done it again, and the members are just brilliant. Respect! At first glance you could think OOTD is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. The album is called VersuS VillainS, which makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe it's about useless instagram influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion. The fact that fashion is moving ever faster is the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up. The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback. It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. And Handong standing in front of the camera with bruises all over her legs seems to be a comment on the merciless industry as well. The music is highly interesting as well. The Rock is dirty and distorted. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.
Thanks for checking out Dreamcatcher’s OOTD! I've seen others explain the song this way and I think it's the easiest way to describe it and is in line with what I believed about it after watching it several times. OOTD has at least 3 layers to it. Layer one is the surface layer. This is a flex song that, on first listen, sounds fun and empowering. However, if you really dig into the MV and the lyrics you see that's it's much more than that, which is where layer two comes in. Layer two is that the MV and the lyrics are critiques of the current state of the industry and the types of songs that have become so popular over the last several years. Everything in the MV is curated and edited to look perfect. The manufactured drama between idols that’s prevalent but behind the scenes they are friends and care about each other. Gahyeon is used to promote products in a store. Jiu is a literal product in packaging, all while telling you she's Venus and Nephthys and to call her a goddess. Venus, being the roman god of love and Nephthys being one of the Egyptian gods of death. Handong has what looks like horrible bruising on her legs, but the upper half of her body looks perfect signifying the physical damage and trauma that idols endure and that it's often hidden from the public. There's more in the MV but these are the things that stood out to me initially. The third layer is the story layer that's tied to this new Versus Duology. You may have noticed the references to a Crown in the MV as well as the text that was popping up in certain areas about the Crown. These references are related to the Alternate Reality Game (ARG) that DCC has been using to promote the album for the last month. About a month before the MV dropped the user ymenehcra (Arch Enemy backwards) popped up on twitter and was tied to the first comeback teasers. Since then, they’ve been tweeting their experiences and leaving cryptic messages on Dreamcatcher’s TH-cam videos. The messages dealt with an obsession with finding the crown. The user has also experienced blackouts and memory loss during this time frame. Since the MV dropped there have been more clues found including audio files of the Dreamcatcher members discussing their 100th and final victim in their quest for the Crown. That final victim is Shasha, who is the person in the MV, who was sacrificed at the end when Jiu places the crown on her head. Also, there are creepy clues in the albums including hidden messages from previous victims that read like something from a horror movie. They've really gone all out on this comeback and the lore surrounding the first album is crazy. This is the first time they've been so overt with the lore outside of the MVs. I'm really looking forward to how all of this is going to wrap up. Siyeon said that we wouldn't fully understand the concept until the second part drops. You should check out the rest of the album. All the songs are great, and they experiment with vocals and song structure a great deal on this album. There's also an awesome dance performance for Shatter, one of the B-sides on the album.
dreamcatcher \:D/ thought you fell off the face of the planet so nice to see you back to the origins ;) ootd is actually satire and in a sense poking at popular concepts in kpop or even at the entertainment industry itself. so if you like current gen kpop, ootd will be more your liking I suppose. maison and vision are part of the apocalypse trilogy; bon voyage is part 3 which you didn't do. you can also check out b-side special clips which came out in the past year - fairytale, demian, shatter. there's also special clips for solo songs - jiu/cherry, sua/no dot, siyeon/entrancing, handong/winter, yoohyeon/for, dami/beauty full, gahyeon/playground.
Missed Dreamcatcher so much. I love their new song, OOTD
