  • “It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.” - John Mayer
    The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. More than two and half years in the making, the Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument that is at once familiar but also newly PRS through and through. This model was based off of Mayer and Smith’s favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, resulting in an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar. The attention that was paid to every detail sets this guitar apart.
    Some of the more distinctive specifications include, the headstock shape, tuners, neck and fretboard, bridge, and pickups and electronics. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted to both accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner, but with PRS’s locking design. The neck shape was modeled a er 1963/1964 vintage instruments, and the fretboard has a 7.25” radius. The moment your hand grabs this neck, it just feels right. Like the tuners, the steel tremolo takes a classic design and incorporates PRS’s trem arm and Gen III knife-edge screws. The bridge on the Silver Sky is setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch. By keeping the bridge in contact with the body, the guitar itself is acoustically louder, which improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coil pickups are very round and full, with a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash.
    Other high-quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate that is curved and makes plugging and unplugging a guitar cable hassle-free, retooled knobs, fretwire that is slightly smaller than what you’d find on most PRS electric guitars, and PRS’s double action truss rod (accessible from the front of the headstock for ease of use).
    The Silver Sky comes in four colors with distinctive accents on PRS’s trademark lower horn scoop.
    The PRS Silver Sky will start shipping on March 20, 2018. The first 500 guitars to ship to dealers and distributors worldwide from PRS Guitars’ Maryland, USA factory will include a commemorative hardshell case. The Silver Sky model will then ship in a newly-designed, premium gig bag.

      @@TheBbtlegit Of course it's a Strat, a very high quality Strat. What were you expecting exactly? John Mayer is a Strat player you know, and this is his signature model, it's not exactly rocket science to understand why it's a Strat
      It's still cheaper than John Mayer's signature Fender strat, and as good if not better quality wise

    I just bought a Moc Sand PRS Silver Sky. This is the best Stratocaster guitar I ever had. I had a famous made in USA Stratocaster for 10 years and a famous boutique guitar made in USA that produces a Stratocaster as well where some people don’t like the shape of the headstock. The Silver Sky guitar has a tone as if you used a compressor/ sustainer pedal. The neck is not chunky or fat and very comfortable. My hand is small and fat. I really love this guitar. Thank you so much Paul Reed Smith, John Mayer and the team for this absolute amazing guitar. I play Blues and Jazz and have been playing guitar for 24 years. I live in Singapore with my American wife and children. I’d like to buy a maple fingerboard silver sky in US when the lockdown is over :). Once again, thank you Paul Reed Smith, his team, and my idol of course John Mayer!

    I don't see why PRS would ever need to defend this. It's beautiful. They built it for a specific artist who has the money to buy and play any guitar, new or vintage, in the whole world. It's what John wanted! It's clearly NOT some simple "strat copy" if it took them two years of research to develop it, and it obviously has a whole lot under the hood to justify its uniqueness to PRS. Big winner, and I am sure the haters will swallow their tongues once they get a chance to play one. I want!

      it's a strat with PRS heel contouring and different tuners, headstock, and bridge. basically a fuck you to Fender management from John Mayer with the help of PRS. I have no problem with it but that's what it is.

    • @dillavou444
      @dillavou444 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fair enough. But the first words out of Bryan's mouth were that it is "obviously" based on a familiar design. Nobody thinks otherwise. I'm just saying that it isn't just a "simple strat copy" like many are saying. It isn't. It's an update. And all of the features you just mentioned are definitely enough for me to consider it. Contrary to popular belief, Leo's designs have been improved upon numerous times. All in the little details.

    • @ruwaldo
      @ruwaldo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "It's an update" so was the G&L and Tom Anderson and Suhr and about 50 other companies.
      As the richardchannel said it's John, for whatever reason, telling Fender to go screw themselves. PRS has made the decision that they think they can sell these and the JM amp. Only time will tell if they are right. During that time John gets a ton of special attention from a very good guitar company.

    • @wellfuckyoumr
      @wellfuckyoumr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dillavou444 I agree with some of what you said but the company pays the artist to play their instrument. It’s called advertising. Fender wouldn’t pay Mayer enough so he left and PRS picked him up and he basically said make me a Strat and they did lol. There is basically no difference between this and a John Mayer fender Strat.

    Okay for everyone going apeshit at PRS for copying a strat, it is a strat inspired design but Paul would probably never have done this because of his respect for Fender but John wanted a guitar that represented him, PRS is just the remastering, John wanted the strat and Paul went with it.

      Dale's Guitar Tuition if you are referring to the CE and S2, well they are close but arent as close as the Silver Sky is, I don't really count them as copies though as it was still marginally early in PRS' development so I see them as experimental models (for that CE) and for the S2 models with pickguards, well they are a cheaper design PRS with a few ideas taken from Fender.

    I'm so ambivalent, honestly I love the subtle innovations and high quality but still - he's explaining the exact workings of any Strat, with a straight face, that can't be easy. I regardless like the sonic innovation and specific playability specs which I believe will become important and noted things about this model.
    Put it this way. I'll see how rich I feel - yes I know, the Ontario sales tax alone on this would buy a nice used Mexican Made Strat and with a few tools I could perfectly tweak that MIM neck to make it a great player guitar. Broke or very frugal guitar players are thus well-served in any case.
    But the PRS company doesn't try to make anything that raw and basic or satisfy that grunt-level dedication to consumer parsimony. Paul goes for a longer goal, but here still falls within a useful range of diminishing returns.
    You just can't expect 7-8 times the guitar for 7-8 times the money, it doesn't work that way and it's the wrong expectation to stand at the fancy end of the showroom and get something that is intrinsically beyond what you are willing to pay for.
    If I ever see a JMSS guitar in Ontario I will even feel more encouraged these exist, versus ordering blind. Simply trusting that a neck grip or fret size will be right for me (a 6-6 tall guy with big hands) is quite a leap of faith, however the description and the overall design rationale in that department is promising. This is cool stuff.

    I think they did a great job. The “strat” tone the Silver Sky has, reflects on John Mayer’s likings. I understand why people are kind of takin back that PRS did this, but there are so many company’s that make there version of the “Strat”. I don’t see a problem with this at all because they’re not the first to do it. I am a huge Fender fan and love everything about Fender. Fender inspires companies to make there versions of the “Strat”. I just don’t see anything wrong with this.

  • @Pheonix2022
    @Pheonix2022 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think a lot of people are missing the point. John Mayer is famous in his own right...but a ton of his image revolves around the strats he played. Most notably the "Black1" and his Hendrix Monterey. When he switched to playing PRS's on stage it didn't look right at all. It took away from the jazz/bluesy feel of the whole set in my opinion. A brand new PRS in no way has that classic look most people think of when they picture the guitars of players in that genre like SRV or Clapton. It would be like Steve Vai suddenly only playing telecasters. Doesn't matter if the music ultimately sounds the same or even if it sounds better, it looks wrong. He wanted Fender out of the picture but he obviously still needed the image to stay as close as possible. PRS had the quality and sponsorship money he was looking for, he just needed their version of that image. So they made this guitar that has all of the things he liked and fixed the things he didn't. Let's get really honest here and let go of some...I'll call it relationship blindness, like when your girl is a 5 but you like her so in your mind shes a 7 or an 8. Fenders headstocks look retarded. That stupid bulb nose looking ball on the end has always been my least favorite feature of Fender guitars since the very first time I opened a guitar catalog. So the new headstock design isn't the worst thing ever. It's just different than what you're use to. Sit back, relax, you can't afford one anyways, and eventually it might grow on you.
