What I've learned throughout this live stream :
    - A violin can also be an orchestra
    - Soloist can also be a page turner for the accompanist
    - Soloist can talk during orchestral parts
    -Tapes are unstable
-Live stream is the only place where we don't hear people clapping between movements
-Brett and Eddy are amazing violinists

And now he’s a soloist performed for almost 43k ppl!🤯 not every soloist in the world can have that much of an audience , and fact that he’s very lucky to have the best friend who played the orchestra part for him. Others always screw it up, but we are a fun orchestra and the social aspect is more important. We are a funny mixture of really good and really naff, and half way in-between. Brilliant laugh! Come and report

    • @Casutama
      @Casutama ปีที่แล้ว +35

Especially in production and *preparation* . No offense intended, but I don't feel it's very fair to compare the playing tbh. Of course they've improved as violinists in the past three years, but not nearly as much as the comparisons might make you think. A lot of the qualitative difference comes simply from preparation time I think.
We know Brett seriously prepared for 4Mil for at least 10 months, maybe longer. Whereas they only made the Tchaikovsky promise 4.5 months before this livestream, and since they later admitted that initially they were intending it to be only a prank before realising from the comment section how much people genuinely wanted to see this, I think it's a fair guess to say he only had 3.5 months, at most 4, of serious preparation for Tchaikovsky (which is also the more difficult concerto). So this time around, with Mendelssohn, that's more than twice (possibly even three times!) the preparation time - for an easier concerto. (I greedily hope Brett will one day, maybe for 10 Mil, gift us the '~1-year preparation time, with great audio production, with an orchestra, on a Strad' version of his Tchaikovsky)
So while yes, obviously all their practicing is paying off and they're constantly improving as violinists, these two livestreams are on such totally different galaxies both in preparation time and audio quality that I don't think the minor level-up in overall violin playing skill is a significant factor in comparison.

This felt like such an authentic musician's experience.
The frantic warming-up beforehand, the freaking out, the memory slip early on followed by flawless execution thereafter, the cheeky grins at each other, asking the audience "do you guys like it?" during the orchestral tutti, the goofy dances with the balloons, dropping the shoulder rest between movements, tuning mid-performance, complaining about page turns, humming along, moaning "I don't want to start" before the fast part, broken hairs, being soaked in sweat at the end, and the immediate dissection of everything that went or almost went wrong.
But most of all your absolutely infectious elation and joy that shone through the entire performance!
This is what being a musician is about. This right here.

i notice how brett seems to become very immersed into the violin as he plays. it’s very much an intimate relationship between him, the violin, and the music. he cradles the violin. At the same time, eddy seems to be having so much fun as he plays. Obviously he’s focused and takes it seriously, but he seems to just be enjoying the situation so much, and you can clearly see every emotion play out on his face depending on where in the piece he is.
other times they laugh and smile together, and other times they just move in sync or out of sync but harmonically (?). and finally, at certain rare points, you see plain joy in their faces because of the music. i know that feeling myself, and it’s wonderful to watch because you can see the focus in their faces, but the passion is strong enough that you can see some glimpses of that joy regardless.

i once saw a comment saying brett plays like he's presenting the music white-gloved on a silver platter and i honestly couldn't agree more.
a lot of soloists do these intense facial expressions and big body movements and gestures, whereas with brett it really feels like he doesn't want it to be about him, the music should be the main star of the show.
he is just there to do the magic and bring the music out of the violin, and then make it shine as radiantly as possible.
idk, that's my impression anyway, i really love that about him.

but now imagining how many hours, how many YEARS of just hard and honest practice EVERYDAY they have put into their playing, being brave enough to put themselves out like this, dedicating their entire LIVES to the music - idek what my point is, except just MAD respect, like for real

God they've done so much for classical music by doing this! They have already done a terrific job of introducing classical music to the modern masses. But now, they've introduced *LIVE* performance in a way that I don't think has been done before.
In our day and age, it's so gosh darn easy to get caught up in perfected studio recordings of classical pieces. It's not too common for us to witness genuine performance of pieces like these in real time outside of concert halls or heavily funded broadcasts.
But, these two dudes! They just let 40,000 people witness live performance, real flaws, real technique, *real musicianship in real time.* That is something to be deeply appreciated.

I would really love it if they'd do more livestreams like this. Orchestra concerts aren't accessible to a lot of people, either because of money or location. And if they'd consider it, it's not like they're wasting their time away giving away free concerts, they don't have to be long, and people were donating like crazy during the livestream, and they can put it on TH-cam afterwards too.
