    Will this amp work when you take the audio signal after the volumen wheel and before it goes to the GBC amp?
    Then you should have a cleaner signal like the cleanamp pro it does.

    So just did this mod, went from too quiet to too loud. Can’t go past 1/4 volume now with out it being blisteringly loud. Should I put a resistor or something?

    I've bought some of these along with a GBAmp3. Looking forward to comparing them! Gonna try sticking them in GBAs.
    Edit: If you want to install one of these in a GBA, a quick warning that it isn't as friendly as the other Gameboys. Only do it if you're confident in your soldering skills because it's quite a bit less space and more complicated than other Gameboy consoles. You have to lift one of the pins in a chip and bridge two tiny points with wires. Doesn't sound like much, but it's a pain and I'm still trying to get it just right.

      Will do! I'll be getting on that next week, the GBAmp3 board is already here but the ones that you used will take a little while longer for shipping. Just gonna put together the GBAmp3 board for now.

      AFAIK the AGB AMP in the GBA is a DAC, so you cant avoid having it use power. The PAM could be used to increase the volume or drive a higher resistance speaker. If you want the PAM to reduce noise, then maybe this fix can help instead gbatemp.net/threads/gba-speaker-noise-fixed.450093

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Clark if your GBC was noisy before the mod, it'll amplify this noise. Any other mods? What version is your motherboard?

    • @Twm532
      @Twm532 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No other mods, version 05. I think its likely amplifying existing noise. I have other, unmodded gbc's that make the same noise but much quieter

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Clark you could probably add a 100uf cap to help decouple any noise from the supply. Unless it's generated within the CPU then there isn't much you can do. I've noticed some GBCs are just quieter and some noisier. A dirty power switch definitely makes it worse

  • @OkiDingo
    @OkiDingo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just picked up my first GBC a few days ago. I was in college when they came out and wasn’t really playing too many games at the time. I also have a GBP backlit (waiting for my kitsch-bent Bivert to arrive). When I turned on the GBC I could barely hear anything, thought the potentiometer was maybe dirty. Nope, so I ordered a new speaker....then I saw this video. I will still replace it since I paid for the speaker but also ordered one of these chips (had to buy 3). Gonna try as soon as it arrives. Maybe I will just go ahead and clean out the power switch too.

    This probably won't be read but is this amplifier just as good as any other gameboy specific amplifier? I suspected their prices were inflated but I don't know if the extra price is worth getting gameboy specific amps instead of this one

    Question, I have this mod installed. It works great, but with a funnyplaying IPS Q5 v2 mod installed, the screen introduces noise into the circuit, I've tried also adding the power filtering capacitor mod, but it seems to have not had much of an affect. Anything else I can try to lessen the effect of the screen causing noise? The noise changes based off what is currently on screen, and I assume it's due to the screen tapping power from the switch by being soldered to the C pin.

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be your switch needs cleaning. You could temporarily bypass the switch to see if that changes the noise, if it does you've found the culprit. If not, there may be too much load on the stock power supply in the GBC with all the mods

    • @andrewcorner2971
      @andrewcorner2971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @rey olmilio probably an issue with the LCD mod, back light may pull most of the power but it is one of those drop in screens. Shouldn't have caused too much of an issue but I just realized that if the Gameboy is native 5v nothing stopping me from dropping in a rechargeable battery and circuit.

    Ruh roh. I may have underestimated how easy this would be to do. I installed a GBAmp3 without too much problem using the less noise instructions and it works a pretty good treat. I even replaced the speaker with a DS Lite Speaker and it's got a pretty lovely increase in clarity. Now when I tried installed this board through what I hoped would be the same instructions... Nuh uh. The pads on the PAM8403 are a little different, and I'm not entirely sure how. Went on a hope and a prayer and proceeded anyways since I figured I could just take it out if anything went wrong. Nope. Even after removal and soldering that lifted pin back on, the GBA won't power on anymore. Bother. Best left to someone who actually knows what they're doing, I.E. not a person who's only competent at following instructionals.

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      gundam126 yikes! I wonder what went wrong? I'll dig out a GBA and have a crack at it too. I wouldn't have thought the GBA would be too different, I guess it is!

    Will this shut down when I plug in headphones? If not, how? Cheers

    • @chrissyfrett9228
      @chrissyfrett9228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the speaker will still shut off if you plug in headphones. I jist tested it to confirm on the one I've modded.
      The amp just sits between the motherboard and the speaker, so this tutorial doesn't alter any part of that circuit.

    • @8-bitBishop
      @8-bitBishop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrissyfrett9228 Just wire a 10k ohm resistor to the SD pad on the amp, to pin 5 of the headphone jack.

  • @gregtime
    @gregtime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I did this a while back, and it works great except the GBC crashes when headphones are plugged in or out while it's on. Any thoughts on why this could happen?

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hackintosh add a large cap across the Pam modules supply pins. It'll be the DC bypass cap discharging and pushing overcurrent into the speaker resetting the GBC.

    • @gregtime
      @gregtime 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'll try that. Do you have a recommendation for what cap to use?

    • @bennvennelectronics
      @bennvennelectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hackintosh 6v or higher, and as many uF as you can fit. Aim for 100uF as a minimum. The idea is to give the amp extra available currently to stop it pulling down the system voltage and triggering a reset
