Hinted at in early previews, Dr. Phosphorus' backstory HAS to be an improvement over his original comic-book origin, to wit: he was a corrupt big shot who built a sketchy _nuclear power plant_ and was somehow all alone there when it went into meltdown. He hid behind some sandbags and the resulting explosion not only permeated his entire body with sand, but also somehow _changed the molecular structure_ of the silicon into phosphorus (the two are neighbors on the Periodic Table) "which must forever burn!!" Later he would sell his soul to a demon for a power boost that transformed him into an energy being, scraping a bit of kitty litter over his wildly implausible survival (even by funnybook standards).
