I think that the content you have been pumping out is amazing! You have done a really good job of finding you own style. It sounds like you might be dealing with some imposter syndrome though, like others have said just because you are producing a vlog doesn't mean that you are not a real film maker. There are plenty of low quality vlogs out there, but the content that you produce is not that. Every week you you put videos feel polished, and tell captivating stories. I think that if you want to produce something longer form, you could definitely do that. I have to imagine there is a lot of footage that doesn't make into the weekly vlogs, you could probably use that content to produce something that is ~30-45 minutes showcasing these trips. You already have the story telling down, and I would definitely watch something like that. Then you would be able to simultaneously put out weekly content while developing a portfolio of longer videos. Keep it up, your doing great!

Another great episode man! Love the work you put out and blending the styles is a great idea. A high quality story based film/vlog like your wanting and doing is way better to watch than a standard vlog style. Keep killing it!

Vlog + Filmmaking = Reality TV. That is the best you can do because you get both the filmmaking done and satisfy the viewers' appetite for new content, inspiration and relationship building. Win-win.
The difference in style in your last couple of videos was noticeable and I for one am a fan, not only did I find it more enjoyable to watch but also it differentiates you from other vloggers out there, keep it up
The concept of “filmmaker” is evolving with super affordable production tech. Anthony Bourdain went for the scripted artsy look to his videos but put out minimal content per year. Mark Wiens (8.5 million subs) creates simple, honest unscripted weekly travel vids that are amazing and in my opinion better than AB. The middle that you are trying to go for seems like a rough space. Lots of work for not a great improvement in subs. I would simplify your weekly vids and plan 2-3 big video projects per year that maybe you could sell. Maybe fund these bigger projects with go fund me or patreon. I would love to see a documentary about native Hawaiian surfers and the conflict with the WSL. Maybe you need to move to LA and experience the commercial side of filmmaking, you clearly have that kind of talent. One final piece of advice, SHOWER DAILY!!!

Love how you have this meta conversation about content and creative production - TH-cam versus Documentary Film - Maybe you should look at the different delivery systems (TH-cam and Film ) as separate entities with different requirements - the fact you are aware of the difference between TH-cam and Film means you are on the right path - questioning how and why you create content and for what audience. In writing we are taught to write for all occasions - creative media and video are still finding that sweet spot which creates clear boundaries about style and content - TH-cam and Film share many attributes but are different mediums with different audiences and definite different expectations - you are apart of a small group aware of the differences and trying to find that happy compromise or ability to do both - not an easy task but you are on the right track - keep questioning and trying the things you feel satisfy your creative urge and purpose - Minagof yan Minaolek Guatu Giya Hagu (happiness and goodness be with you)

Then was instantly a fan when, I saw “The Spencer Boys-Hydrofoil Film” what a great short film. I thought to myself, wow this kid is really talented. I think your content is just stellar. I made my first awful vlog 10 months ago... did weekly for 6 months (even though I'm a middle aged surfer and a total novice film-anything). When I came across your vlog, I instantly stopped weekly because it wasn't sustainable for me personally... especially if I'm going to tell the story of my life with any kind of quality. I'm in a position where I don't care (financially) about subs or even views... I just want to be able to watch my own little movies and feel some pride. Which brings me to my point... at some point fuck the algorithms and schedules. Consistency means keeping going and if the product is good it will find an audience. No one wants to hear this when they are your age: take your time, bro. I'm 45 and life only keeps getting radder. You have time and the world wants the best from you! I would totally watch videos that are "half-vlog/half-film". I just finished your series on the Azores and it was very enjoyable. There are 1000 vloggers out there, the way you do it takes more time and dedication. The script and narration gives it context and fluidity. Instead of showing us a daily routine, you give us highlights and feelings. But hey, I'm just a viewer. Hope you guys come back to the Azores!

Not sure if you want to get into the documentary side of film Making, but I was thinking an epic action sports type film would be a documentary on old uncle Jamie. JOB has a ton of subscribers and a lot of sponsors and is probably the most recognized name in the surf vlog game. I think a lot of people would be interested in his life story. How he got to where he is now and where he sees his social media empire going. You could reconnect with your pal and spend a little time on the North Shore in the summer when the waves are smaller and people are searching for content. Just a thought.

Bro idk, but these feelings u put out sometimes feel like Im talking to a friend, and I really get everything u're saying, and it makes a lot of sense. Even tho idk anything about the filming industry a lot of professionals go through this nowadays, "do I produce a deeper content or do I produce the content for the views", cuz everyone has to pay their bill's, I guess u have to trust the process. All of us who watch u, can see your talent, is just a matter of time for u to balance all your potential and get to live out of it in a way that makes u happy and recognized the way u want. This time of year the surf is aways big because of the cold front that push across the east coast and push over tha Atlantic Ocean. That island is so beautiful ive been there and surf there when i live in rota spain. There is alot of good surf spot in spain too.

Yer you went to a Delta Cafe, it's like a cheap cafe chain in Portugal, you'd like independents alot more. Also where the US is just objectively wrong is measuring the quality of a coffee on it's size! Good coffee is best small and intense! Or you do a proper latte. Quality over quantity!

I totally get what you're saying and how you feel. What I would like you to know, from my personal perspective, is that blogs you do make are the best edited filming of any bloggers I've seen. I think the new style you've developed is ideal and a good solution for you now. I don't think you ever should give up your passion to create documentaries and be the best sport videographer. In fact, your talent shows through in your blogs. You have a gift for narrating and if you are scripting any of your filmed dialogue, you do it so naturally , I was unaware. I DO think you have a definite talent with words - an excellent wordsmith, if you will. I have seen your documentary and know of you from being Jamie's vlogger. You are collecting quite a bit of content, I would assume. Is it not possible to one day make a video from all your collected filming? And it appears you are making decent income- I could be wrong, but in the future I think you're true followers woukd still be there if you took time off to make a video. For example, if you're familiar with SV Delos, we ve followed them, and continued following Brady and Blue when they left. If course they ended up in Tahoe (Trukee), Tahoe is my favorite place I've spent every summer and nearly every winter weekend skiing, and is 2 to 3 1/2 hours from my home, helped. But other than IG posts for the past 2 to 3 years, we stuck with Brady and Blue. And now they are back with a utube series. So, my point is, if you've bothered to read this novel this far, is I believe your followers will stick by you if you took time off to make a video. In fact, I HOPE you do someday in the future, because you already are one of the best videographers AND utube filmers. Yours talent shows through. I'm not just talking out my ass either. I'm probably older than your parents. ( dont judge me- I dont act my age. Ever. Lol. Just saying, I've been around. My dad was an anateur/ photographer.
