- Zohra Bai Agrewali (1868-1913) Zohrabai Agrewali belonged to the Agra Gharana of music. She marks the dying phase of the courtesan singing tradition in Indian classical music. One of the most notable singers of her time, Zohrabai is known for her distinct style - macho style of singing. Zohrabai sang a variety of genres such as khayal, thumri, and ghazals. She had influenced some of the biggest names of the Agra Gharana and in the music cosmos of her times. Trained under Ustad Sher Khan and Ustad Kallan Khan, her music survives as 78 rpm recordings. She recorded over 60 songs during 1908-1911.
Zohra Bai was a great singer of the era when the art of recording was in a cradle stage in India. Recordings commenced in India in 1902 and Zohra Bai was first recorded in 1908. Zohra Bai was another name of self-determination. In a royal wedding ceremony, she has a tussle with a famous lady singer of those days. After that Zohra Bai went into a self-imposed exile for six years. During this period she stayed in a village and took rigorous training of music from Ustad Sher Khan of Agra Gharana. She also learnt the finer aspects of performing techniques from him. The new Zohra Bai came out as an altogether different personality. There was a Gavayya Dhang in her performances. She threw voice powerfully and sang aggressively. Her admirers range from her contemporary Gauhar Jan to present-day Kirana Gharana doyenne Gangubai Hangal. Only short pieces by her survive in a number of 78 rpm recordings dating from the first two decades of the twentieth century, including matki more re goras in raga Jaunpuri or dekhen ko man lalchay in raga Sohni from 1909. These recordings are very rare.

शायद ज़ोहरा बाई आगरा वाली और ज़ोहरा बाई अंबाला वाली दोनों एक ही हैं।
इनका गाया हुआ गीत "आहें न भरीं शिकवे न किए, कुछ भी न ज़ुबाँ से काम किया।
हम दिल को पकड़ कर बैठ गए, जब तेरा किसी ने नाम लिया। बहुत सुंदर गाना है। जो बचपन में लाख के मोटे रिकार्ड पर हुआ करता था। लेकिन आज के समय नई तकनीक के चलते पुराने समय के रिकॉर्ड मिलना मुश्किल है।
ज़ोहरा बाई आगरा वाली और ज़ोहरा बाई आगरा वाली दोनों अलग-अलग हैं।
आगरा वाली ज़ोहरा बाई का जन्म 1868 और मृत्यु 1913 को हुई थी जबकि अंबाला वाली ज़ोहरा बाई का जन्म 1918 और मृत्यु 21 फरवरी सन् 1990 को हुई थी ।
यह जानकारी मैंने अपनी ऊपर की पोस्ट लिखने के बाद देखी है।

Mohtram, आप के कार्यक्रम बहोत शानदार हैं, zohra बाई आगरा वाली की दास्तान informative थी लेकिन tashnagi रह गई. अगर उनके बारे में मजीद batain भी मिल जातीं के वो कहाँ दफन की गईं हैं और इतनी कम उम्र में किस वजह से उनकी wafat hoi उनके शौहर koun थे etc.
ज़ोहराबाई पर मेरा एक लंबा मकाला छपने वाला है, उसमें पूरी जानकारी दे रहे हैं. वैसे आपको बता दें कि उनकी मौत पटना में हुई थी और पटना के मछरहट्टा इलाके में उनकी कब्र है. कहते हैं कि शाह अक़बर साहब दानापुरी से उनकी आशनाई थी.

ज़ोहराबाई आगरे वाली (1868-1913) अलग हैं और ज़ोहराबाई अंबालेवाली (1918-1990) अलग. आप देख सकते हैं कि ज़ोहराबाई अंबालेवाली के जन्म से पाँच साल पहले ही ज़ोहराबाई आगरेवाली गुज़र चुकी थीं.
