I also listen more often to Free Funk, I can recommend "Kngihts of Power" from the Music Revelation Ensemble (James Blood Ulmer Project) for all lovers of "Tao of Mad Phat", even though it incorporates some free jazz moments. Tao is in my Top 3 for 20 years now - regardless any musical style.
I'm not a big fan of free jazz and avant-garde jazz. However, probably as somewhat odd as it may be, I do love free funk and m-base. Maybe it's due to the latter two not being as noisy.
