Guys please remember she’s 18 not a child, no need to be too strict, also let her lock doors. I know when I stayed at my aunts house I locked the door anytime I was changing, came back from a shower etc, I guess if you know you won’t enter her room without knocking that’s okay, but I just did it for extra privacy tbh it was nothing bad. She probably would only lock the door when putting on lotion and changing clothes. Also remember you’re not her parents so you don’t need to act as so, establish authority and respect but also have fun and relate with her she’s close in age to you guys.
I agree somewhat, she isn't that close in age to them considering theyre around 26-27, forgot their exact age so when your that old, to them she's still a "child" to them, but I understand your point

You don’t have to be a mother to set boundaries in your own space. Additionally, I don’t think they’re asking too much. Maybe locking the door might not be fully necessary….
Anyway, when you visit someone’s home, you should already be of the mind to respect it…..sometimes even more so than you own home. And that’s not being someone’s mother, it’s just expecting respect.

The rules are reasonable but some are a bit much like the locking the door thing. She's an adult now and deserves her privacy. I'm a teenager as well and honestly we just stay to ourselves and mind our business. So I think it would be good to think about that.

Teenager tips: Always have snacks man. Teens just be hungry at random times having snacks just for her is a nice treat. Treat her as an adult as she is one now and don't knock her opinion just cause she's younger. I think the locking the door thing is a bit much. When your at other people's places you just lock the door for privacy, whether your changing or having a serious phone call and don't want interruptions. Plus I just find it to be polite.

I’ll say try to have fun but incorporate responsibilities that she can carry her through her freshman year. Maybe include Sunday reflections as well so you can see where her mind frame as well she develop into adulthood
Yes, I found it interesting that the only "household chore" included was maintaining the room - maybe to them, since they know her, it's obvious that she'll help with dishes/laundry... Those are useful skills for when you move away from home! :)

As far as tips go, stop referring to her as a baby. She’s a whole teenager about to go into college. I know she’s yall ‘baby’ and are probably just exaggerating for the camera a little, but I’m sure she’s independent enough to where she won’t be impending on y’all too much. Don’t be afraid to let her act her age or leave her alone.

I agree. I'm not far removed from being 18 and I remember feeling like I wanted to be taken more seriously and viewed like the adult the world insisted I was. Little things like that would irritate me a lot, especially since countless people would unintentionally insult me and my intelligence by saying I looked like I was in middle school.

@@Nenemarieeee Nope! It's about respect and protection. She's 17, not 25, so rules are a requirement. Especially because she's away from home and they will be her guardian. They both need to present themselves as adults to her so she's COMPLETELY aware that they are responsible for her during her time with them. By positioning themselves as her 'friend' there's a possibility that she will not take them seriously - which isn't what you want when you're incharge of someone else's child. She's a baby at 17, but clearly will be given her space and opportunity to have fun.
Since she’s a teen bout to go to college she don’t even need that much rules lol. Teens just keep to themselves literally.

The locked door thing is excessive .. especially since your fiancé is living there too and this is a house she does not know. She might feel uncomfortable changing, showering, and sleeping without being able to lock the door. If this was her parent’s house , sure! But at a auntys house this could make her feel unsafe and unsecure. She may not even say anything verbally to the rule but the feeling could still be there 🤷🏾♀️
Biggest advice is try to relate as much as you can. You probably had the same thoughts/feeling when you were a teenager but also remember there are some things you don’t know because of generational differences (ex. the effects of growing up with social media.)
As a resident director of college students and I’m the same age as y’all, just have fun with her! Yea you’re a full adult figure but not far from her age. Be a listening ear cause she’ll probably really have some valuable questions for you both. And be ready to learn so much from her too! Ground rules are always important but letting them know that you trust them too goes a long way.

With most teenagers you usually have to be the one to make the effort and hang out with them because I don't even see my brother (only when he needs food or something like that), and we live in the same house together. I don't know if being a boy has anything to do with it because I'm still a teen girl but my friends (all of them girls and mostly around the same age as me) were never as disconnected to their families like I've seen with boys.

So I'm 20 , I'm fresh out of teenage years so my advice from a "kids" perspective is I wasn't treated like an adult..nobody took me seriously. So hear them out and let them make their own mistakes like obviously if it's unsafe, step in but they need to grow their life and decisions their self right now. Another thing is I hated when people treated me like some kind of monster because I was a teen. The whole "their just a hormonal , dramatic mess " thing. It hurts because at that moment you are discovering who you are and what u wanna do. Juggling a job and school most of the time. That's stressful and scary..all they want is comfort and support not you making them feel insignificant or crazy.

I’m 22 and I never was really given any rules in my house growing up, but they were kind of implied. I never felt the need to lock the door but sometimes would close it when I was getting dress. I’d say at 18 the best u can do for her is pray for her on the daily. My mom always prayed that there would be a hedge of protection over me every day and that I would use wisdom. I always felt like my parents trusted me to do the right thing and I think that always pushed me to do right without all the rules ya know? Y’all are amazing guardians though 🥰. Just remember that she may take some time to feel comfortable in the new space and you don’t want to make her uncomfortable by dumping on too many rules. It would scare me a little if I was her. Love y’all though just sharing my opinion.
