My mom and some friends took a trip down to the Big South Fork area a year or two ago with their horses. She said it was some of the best trail riding she's ever done. Had lots of fun. The horses liked it too.
The train portion of the video reminded me of the Great Smokey Mountian RR in Bryson City NC, we have rode that train. The difference is the train is steam. From my visits to KY it is some beautful country
When I was a kid we used to walk behind the falls there on the Cumberland, but erosion took that part of the attraction away a long time ago. Last time I can remember doing that was in the 70's.
Very enjoyable video , i look at the safe and the quality of the work . You know how we use to make things to last and made them look it . Love the old trucks and little engine that could. Muddy river song cane to mind.
Hi Pierre. I don't know if Phil mentioned it but I messaged him a few weeks ago because we haven't heard from you guys. Anyway he briefly explained things. Not in detail of course. But anyways, it's better directly from me to you. Hope things get a bit easier for you and best wishes for you and your family. Thanks for all you've done so far and hope that you have time to make more videos soon.
My Grandpa, Great Uncle's, and their cousins worked that old mine. Oh the stories I've heard, lol. Great fishing there during certain times of the year , mainly spring when they let water out of Lake Cumberland from the dam and the water is up good. Huge flatheads can be caught from there. Just wondering why they pushed the cars all the way back. They used to turn it around down there on a switch track, lol. And I have an Uncle who lives just a few miles from Cumberland Falls. But yet I haven't got to fish there yet, lol.
I have rode that train when I was young grew up in Corbin not far from the falls you need to see the MOONBOW it’s a once in a life time thing only one left in the world
I wish Mosler was still here in Hamilton. Fisher Body was another that employed a lot of people not to mention the paper mills we had. Champion Paper was one.
Hi Brian, Good video! The locomotive was indeed 2 cycle but not Detroit. Was probably an EMD 567 Electro-Motive Division of GM. 567 cu.in. cyl. Detroit's were also 2 cycle but largest was the 149, 149 cu.in /cyl. Love to hear them 2 cycles wind up!
Yes it would be an EMD but being its GM I just think of it as Detroit, different divisions of the same thing in my mind. The 20v149 was the biggest right?
bcbloc02 they used those 20V149’s for generators or pump station backups. The biggest I believe they put in locomotives were either the 20 cyl 645 or a 16 cyl 710. The engine you guys were on was probably around 900 hp. Like a 8 cyl 645 engine. 2stroke Detroit’s and EMD prime movers were basically the same, EMDs bigger of course and with different numbering. Detroit’s were 20 ( 20 cyl) v ( v-configuration) then 149 (cyl displacement) and emds just gave you the displacement of one cylinder as the model number and they made three, a 567, a 645 and 710. I’m about 2 sips into my first cup of coffee so sorry if this is hard to read!!! Lol beautiful country, Brian!
I always liked the sound of the EMD's Alco's and the OLD Napier Deltic 4-bangers that made 1K horses at 900 r's with a turbo. The opposed piston jigsaw puzzles just didn't get it for me. Too much too much. And Baily would approve this trip if he'd got to go along!
@@bcbloc02 Knowing you, you'll get one, build an extension on the barn/shop for it and then run everything inside off line shafts and flat belts. It'll be interesting to see how you'll run a dro off a line shaft, much less a flat belt but you'll find a way. A country boy WILL survive and Baily will wag his wagger off on THAT deal!
bcbloc02 when's your next trip to HGR ??? is that the same engine that comes in Alco Switcher S1 S2 S3 S4 and an rs1 there is a scrap yard the still has one running and spare engine and there's a few on short lines in Ohio
@@plymouth-hl20ton37 Yes the engine I want is the one they used in the S series locos, particularly I want a turbo one as they sound the best. :-) I really wish i could find just an engine as I can transposrt one of them, moving a loco becomes a huge $$$$ problem. I know where there is an S2 for sale for a good price but getting it moved kills the deal as it has to be trucked out. :-(
The last time I took that train ride one of the guys that worked there told me the company was restoring a steam engine to run on that line. Anyone have any information about that?
Looks like a beautiful ride to take! I've always considered Kentucky sort of a Hidden, Gem it's very beautiful. It reminds me of home here in Upstate New York. So are you strictly a passenger or passenger / Ride Along mechanic?
Brian, if you like trains I am an engineer and would be glad to send you a company logo ball cap. If you want one Just let me know where to send it. Joe
God bless you brian, may you enjoy a long and happy life
Hi Brian
That train would take some stopping...
I liked that safe too...
Very well made...
Beautiful scenery...
👍🇺🇸🇬🇧

Terrific train ride. Thanks
Thanks for bringing us along.
Rushing water sure moves rocks and boulders. Gorgeous area.
Beautiful country. Nice, relaxing and enjoyable ride, thanks!
I like watching trains go by!
You gotta see the Cass Scenic Railway, Cass WV. Last Shay steam locomotive built, beautiful scenery, and a town lost in time.
Nice video Brian ! 👍 Thanks for sharing !

Wow! I live right near there and been working in Stearns over 20 yrs.
Another of the many interesting things you show the watchers!!

It is really good, hard kayaking!
Thanks for the tour.
That was aright good train at the end. Man there is a lot of silt in that river, send us some of that rain.
It is all down south of me. I haven't had a 1/4" of rain in the last 5 weeks or so. When it quit raining it quit for good!!
@@bcbloc02 That is hard on your corn.
Yeah, not going to be a good crop year for sure.
bcbloc02 is it worth irrigating ?
That old diesel locomotive definitely tailgated you during the whole trip....!!!
A sneak peak in the past... 👍👍😎

very cool Brian! thanks
Wow you come in within 30 miles of where I live I've been on that train it's a nice ride
Nice road trip. Enjoyed.
Thanks Brian...
Thanks Brian, some very good camera work.
A couple great places to visit. I highly recommend white water rafting the Cumberland river below the falls.
I have white water kayaked that stretch, got some good drops. :-)
That is some extreme terrain! Nice ride a long, thanks for sharing.
I like the road trip Brian. The scenic way to ride.

At the time there had been a rock slide on the tracks and they couldn't make the full run that is why they backed out.
When to college in Barbourville in 05-07, had no idea this railway even existed! Been to Cumberland Falls, though. Very pretty when the waters clear.
Awesome trip . Thanks for making the video

Thanks Brian. Its a beautiful area you live in.
You need to float the niangua, in Mo. Beautiful cliffs and walls.
Neet video !
Thanks for the trip, now I know how abom gets about on his trips, lm sure I could see him hitching a lift on one of those fright cars ?

Took my Scout Troop to see the Moonbow at Cumberland Falls. It's an experience they'll never forget but very hard to photography.
Admit it, you bought that locomotive and you're laying a spur line to your property.
No but there is a loco I could afford in the PA region but it would have to be trucked, anybody want to help sponsor that project? :-)
Just so Brian can bring in the *Big* machines (Lathe, Boring mill) :)
I suppose with a rail spur, Brian can work on performance Locomotive engines :)
How far would you have to run track to connect to existing rail lines?
About 2 miles to closest rail line. I doubt the dozens of neighbors properties it would cross would be very happy about it. lol
@@bcbloc02 No problem, Set up a Go fund me page to lease a tunnel boring machine to tunnel out below neighbors properties :) /Joking of course!
Whats your next project for a pulling contest Brian . EMD on rubber wheels for a full pull every time .
Did you go by the Big Spring while you were down thata way? If I recall, it's between Monticello and Somerset.
Big Spring? Mill Springs?
Everybody likes train rides. I wish the Amtrak tours were not so expensive.
Does that train pull has good as it pushes? Fun video! That’s some cool scenery! What was more fun, the boat ride or the train?

The last time I took that train ride one of the guys that worked there told me the company was restoring a steam engine to run on that line. Anyone have any information about that?
They have a steam locomotive called K&T #14. I believe its restoration to operation is permanently stalled due to lack of funding.
bcbloc02 oh darn. I was afraid of that.
What is it about Machinist and Trains? Nice Video Brian!
Y Pop hey I'm a machinist and I build ride on trains 1.6 scale and in 2.5 scale
that locomotive got the same power plant as your large lathe?
Brian - Cool train ride. Very nice views. BTW, was that Keith Rucker driving the train?

Sorry, I can't tell the train fan to be quiet. :-(
Build a steam engine and start a line shaft shop get the team to help .
I don't have the kind of time to wait on a steam engine to do work. They are awesome though just not good for my shop.
