    I like how the ending is setting his wife's ashes free, something that is the opposite of the curse of having to wear the ashes of his own family

    • @Xyphir
      @Xyphir ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Makes even more sense for him to remove his bandages for this. Getting to release those ashes made him feel like Ares wasn't controlling him anymore, that his scars are healed and he no longer needs to bandage them

    • @DOC_951
      @DOC_951 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Imo that was the worse part of the game… that the entire plot was just trying to get to the tallest mountain to scatter the ashes.
      Obviously a lot happens in between; but at the end of the day this was the weekend aspect imo.

      Agreed. I never got why people are bothered by it being a qte, it's basically exactly what they were made for.
      I do agree though the moment is ruined by it not really being a choice for Kratos but I see it more as Coliapi doesn't understand and he will never see her again.

    There is a piece of dialogue that's very easy to miss GoW 2018 where Mimir theorizes that the battle between Thor and Jormmungandr fractured the world tree and sent him back in time. This would explain why he already hates Thor and also how he seemed to just appear out of thin air (which iirc is brought up by Freya when taking the elevator down from the mountain).

    • @TheMasterblah

      I loved those dialogue lines, because I think Odin told Thor to fight jormmungandr, and I feel like the idea of Odin actively trying to stop ragnarok but because of fate ends up causing it through his actions

    I think the "that wasn't me line" in Helheim from Atraeus was meant to show him seeing his actions from a different perspective showed him how he has changed after finding out he was a god and showing some regret or shame for his brutality when killing Modi not an actual memory loss/black out type thing
    (edit: spelling/grammer/stuff)

      @MelancholicAwesomnes ปีที่แล้ว +60

      That is exactly what it meant. Like you said Atreus is in disbelief because he thinks he is a good god but here is a vision of him brutally killing someone. Kratos affirms that Atreus, on the whole, isn't truly a cruel person but he is allowing the fact of his godhood to change who he is. It was fairly clear to me on the first playthrough but I guess not for everyone which to a certain extent is understandable.

    For the bifrost bit during the baldur chase sequence, Ive always been under the impression that it takes everyone to hel because kratos locks it in prematurely midway through the temples initial spin towards the asgard gate. Because of this, the temple automatically picked the nearest realm tower in its spin cycle, which happened to be hel.

    God of war 2018 was such a monumental moment in my life I had grown up playing the God of war games with my dad I'd watch him play and then I'd have my own save and get to play as well. As I got older and moved out and due to some personal issues in my life I was separated from my father for about 6 years and that's when 2018 happened and was such a euphoric experience playing this father son experience in a game that was my father son experience. I want to reconnect with my father and play this game with him like we did when I was little.

    1:51:50 the world serpent spitting out your axe is actually a huge deal because he imbues your axe with his poison, the poison that kills Thor. Also a cool detail is that Faye had the axe created specifically to stand up to Mjolnir. Which was also created by Brok and Sindri and is why they don’t speak.

    If I recall correctly the reason Thor took 3 years to respond to his son's deaths was because time flows faster in the realms the higher it resides upon the World Tree; the flow of time in Asgard is faster than in Midgard, so news reaching Asgard from "lower" realms takes longer.

      If you go back to Kratos's house in the forest after the main story ends a cut scene will play. Kratos and Atreus are awoken by a storm and when they go outside to look, a shadowy figure stands there silent. Kratos yells 'who are you?'", and the stranger reveals a hammer holstered at his hip that is electrified by his touch, the screen the turns black.

      Hmm, that explains why Kratos was able to save Atreaus. When Atreaus got sick. Kratos traveled to Hel to retrieve the heart from the troll in Hel. What could've taken days, only took Kratos a few hours/days in Hel, since time in hel runs much slower compared to Mid-Gard's. If Kratos would've traveled to say, Asgard, it would've taken him years traveling between realms & Atreaus would've been toast...

    I feel like one thing that's really important to consider is that Kratos already changes fate in a huge way when he kills Modi, because if I'm remembering right, Modi is supposed to survive the events of Ragnarok. As soon as he's killed, everything that was supposed to be predetermined is suddenly up in the air, so I can see why Odin and Thor might hesitate to go after Kratos after that, either out of fear that there's no guarantee they'll make it to Ragnarok anymore, or curiosity now that through whatever it was he ended up doing, it might be possible that they could actually make it THROUGH it.

    Bro some of your line of questioning for GoW 2018 is so off. Starting with Kratos being stabbed. It was never said that he wasn't able to feel pain, that's solely Baldurs thing because he's cursed. So why would the fact that he was stabbed be talked about again when he has a healing factor? For the bridge scene, Kratos put the key in before the bridge was done aligning with the realm so it took him to the nearest one in the cycle and caused a malfunction. When Atreus is saying "that's not me" he doesn't mean that in a literal sense. He's saying that's not who he truly is and Kratos is reiterating that it's who he's become as of late. And for him throwing the axe into the water.... The sign literally tells him too. I'm fully convinced you didn't play the game lol.

    Commenting as watching so maybe I have to add things later.
    The choice in Chains of Olympus is not "stay here and never see her again" or "leave and never see her again", it's "stay here as long as I (persefone) planned with your daughter" or "become again the monster who slayed her to keep her alive in the Elisyum" so it is a very strong question for Kratos, to stay with Caliope to the end, knowing she will die for good, or be what he hates most, himself, again, to keep her alive even if he won't ever see her.
    The thing about Morpheus is that he is not doing any of this on porpuse, that's an inherit power he has as the god of sleep/dreams, and Helios stops him just by showing up, is day and night literally. At night when the sun (Helios) is gone, people sleep and have dreams (Morpheus) that stop when the sun raises. I don't know why you question why does that happen.
    Fun fact about Ghost of Sparta: when Krato's mother dies, in the psp if you put the volume at max and hear very closely, you can more or less hear the name "zeus", or at least the z and s sounds, that give the clue.
    About the pact with Ares in Ascension: it makes sense if you think the only thing it removes from Kratos memories is that he killed his family, but he still knows they are dead, and he has this feeling that something's off and Ares had something to do with the death of his wife and daughter, and that's why he want to get rid of the oath. It's a bit of a strech, but it can be reasoned that way.

    1. Zeus Stabs and kills Kratos
    2. Kratos comes through the portal and knock Zeus back.
    3. Kratos pulls The Blade of Olympus out of his own DEAD body.
    You should look at it again. ✌️

    Magni and Modi were prophesied to survive ragnorok so thier Kratos winning them breaks the prophecy of Ragnorok or in other words the norse gods now longer know if any of Odins prophecy collections can be broken, changed, or have already been changed.

    Gow 2018 would never have had the same effect it did if not the first 3 games... They're actually a brilliant masterpiece...
    I literally feel like I grew up with kratos... From a hate & anger filled teenager... To a reasonable adult who sees everyone as human being... I didn't value life before..
    But now, I do know.

    I find it so fascinating seeing these recent retrospectives on the original series from people who hadn't played them. It's such a mix of love and apathy.
    Some people see why they're so cherished and others think they're kind of hack and slash shlock and the only good ones are the reboot series.
    And I'm always happy when someone gets their value. I dislike this idea that the story and games are only good now. I prefer the original trilogy tbh.

    This was pretty good, but when you started talking about Ghost of Sparta, you missed something. During the altercation ending of God of War 3, Zeus and Gaia have a small banter moment where they talk about how Kratos has failed as a pawn for both sides and Zeus says something like; "Perhaps you should have chosen the other one.." referring to Deimos.

    This video is awesome. I never got a chance to play the original games and to finally contextualize the stories prior to God of War 2018 was incredibly elucidating. All that I knew was that Kratos killed the Greek gods, minor and major dieties of that realm, and that he himself was a god. Being somewhat informed of Greek mythology helped as well but actually connecting what I knew to the games themselves was very enjoyable. A great video and a great retelling.

    How parents can harm their children while trying to protect them because they're afraid of losing them is, yes, very much a theme of this game. Also, I seem to recall the World Serpent fell down Yggdrasil while fighting Thor during Ragnarok, which sent him into the past. This would explain why kid Loki meets him during the game.

    I think one of the few times that QTEs were done correctly in a game was with Kingdom Hearts II with Reaction Commands. Reaction Commands require you to hit the correct button quickly and consecutively or be punished usually with damage or sometimes death, give you a visual spectacle that is both unique and satisfying, the rarely feel repetitive unless you are fighting the same enemy, used to enhance what can be done with the combat system, and give the developers a way to tell stories in the middle of a fight rather.
    In boss fights, especially with Organization XIII members, attempting to use Drive Forms has a VERY high chance of triggering Anti-Form, which is essentially Sora going berserk losing access to magic, Reaction Commands can not be used, and you can stun-lock enemies but take damage much more and give a lot less damage. These kind of moments hammer home how natural they make the QTEs as part of the combat as it something you would not be actively think about. So, triggering Anti-Form in most boss fights is a detriment or a possible death sentence on Critical Mode.
    Long story short: QTEs can be used to enhance a game but it is rarely done because something like the Reaction Command system is not simple to make. Usually, QTEs were/are used as a lazy way to make complicated senses, save on development time, and/or give a visual spectacle that requires little to no effort from the player other than just paying attention. The God of War games eventually make up for this by making the QTEs be for extremely brutal yet poetically satisfying moments where Kratos pulls a Doomslayer before DOOM 2016 was even a thing.

And he only starts second guessinmg himself after he killed Hephaistos and escorting hes daughter to certain doom. Also he only cared for her for a second when he tought that she is Kaliope. When he realized that she isn't he was very stand off-ish to her.

    I personally don't really understand the controversy of the women dying by getting crushed by the wheel. Like you're literally ripping out cyclops eyes out of their head and the entrails out of centaurs, but still people were like "oh no! That poor one women!" not to dismiss anyone's or Gingy's opinion. I just don't get it why that was focused on. Also the nudity never really bothered me at all. I've watched a lot of horror and gore flicks. I'm not a 5 year old. I'm mature enough to see to nip from time to time and keep me cool. If I made a God of war review I probably wouldn't even had but one sentence in my whole video simply acknowledging the fact that nudity is present in the video game.

    I'm typing this comment before playing Ragnarok so I don't know, but my personal theory is that Athena was actually there, but she's only letting Kratos see her, and that she's actually pulling the strings in the Norse Saga to get her revenge on Kratos. She is the one who is fueling Odin's paranoia and will be the one to bring about the final conflict and may even be the final boss.

    You're really hung up on those polygonal "breasts" though.
    They're probably there considering it was a norm in Greek mythology storytelling and also they're for the same reason as any game would also have a "gratuitous" amount of blood and guts.
    Tits are harmless. Never hurt anyone. Other than a silly sense of embarrassment.
    But blood and guts in games for children? One could make an argument.
