  • The roads, highways and bridges across the country are funded, owned and maintained by a complex cluster of different government agencies at the local, state and federal levels. Roads and highways are vital to economic growth and play a key role in American culture. But more than 30% of Americans say the roads in their area are in need of urgent repair.

For me if my rent was less I would be able to pay a little more if not all the taxes but rents are going up causing my disposable income to go down, if this trend continues, the average consumer fill not able to pay any tax at all.

      @@noldo3837 The corporations don't "redirect their taxes" to the Netherlands. They don't pay any significant sum of taxes, anywhere. That's kinda the whole point of "tax havens". The Netherlands pays for it's road maintenance by taxing all types of fuel, cars, and so forth. Aka: the user pays.

    • @Christian-cb9jr
      @Christian-cb9jr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@noldo3837 I don't think you understand what a tax haven is. A tax haven is a place where corporations are legally able to evade taxes. If the corporation still had to pay taxes they wouldn't relocate and the country wouldn't be a tax haven. They don't ''redirect'' the taxes, they relocate certain financial departments of the company in order to avoid taxes all together. That's why it's a bad thing, the government of the country in question doesn't receive any money.

      The roads are bad and slow and expensive because of unnecessary bureaucratic regulations. Take the Kew Gardens Interchange

It isn’t because the government have no money but because the workers can work as long and as slow as possible and still be paid. Not to mention all the environmental groups’ complaints.

    As a French guy living in the US, for 6 years now, I’ve always been baffled at how bad the infrastructures for transportation are. Roads are terrible with potholes everywhere. Bridges are all rusted, trains haven’t changed for 70 years. I know France is known for it’s road quality, but still, the comparison is harsh for the US. While in France the pavement is smooth, we also try new technologies to lower the road noise with the tires, or to have roads that filter the water so when it rains a lot your car will still have good grip. Some European countries, including a small part in France, are testing roads that produce energy.

I also think we need to investigate better technology, materials and maintenance practices. My town instituted a sales tax to better maintain roads, but it seems to be going to big road expansion projects, rather than focusing on repairimg and maintaining the existing infrastructure.

  • @nleem3361
    @nleem3361 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Roads look and feel great when they're 1st built. Maybe we need to look deeper into what breaks down a road and see if we can build them strong in the 1st place. For example, most roads with buses have the same thickness of pavement and road base in both the left and right lanes. The right lane with the buses quickly develops potholes and ruts especially at the bus stops, so why not build them stronger in the right portions of the road in the 1st place. We may also want to reconsider the criteria we use to design a pavement section (thickness of each layer of road material), and look at how we determine how suitable the existing ground is that everything goes on top of, and if it should be strengthened. We also need to develop better patching methods for when utilities are repaired and installed.

      Yeah here in Missouri, I've seen that it has better roads than the surrounding states, although Kansas isn't too far behind. Arkansas roads aren't too good, although recently in Northwest Arkansas, they are revamping many roads there, including Interstate 49, which they're also building a bypass around Bella Vista since I-49 in Arkansas isn't connected to I-49 in Missouri. In Illinois, Interstate 55 to Chicago isn't bad, but it isn't good either. And in Oklahoma, besides in the cities, the only decent roads are the turnpikes and Interstates. The ramps on the cloverleaf interchange on I-40 and US-69 are horrendous. Last time I've seen US-69 heading towards Texas in April 2019, they had one side of the highway closed due to construction

    It's simple. Road construction is public work. This means the lowest "qualified" bidder receives the work. This leads to companies cutting costs by using cheaper materials which in turn break down much faster. Also, in most states, contractors are not held responsible to repair damages to the roads that they constructed. So, they have no desire to produce a quality end product. Many see roadwork as job security for the future.

    • @arturturkevych3816
      @arturturkevych3816 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends on the contract and quality control. In England the Kent council does a complete resurfacing once every 30 years now to be more efficient. For 20 years there is basic maintenance and the council does preventative maintenance to extend the life of the road.

    • @jamesgardner2101
      @jamesgardner2101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly my thought- I see the same contractors doing the same repairs on the same roads year after year. I'm not talking about fixing potholes- bridges that were constructed without regards to the water underneath and have to be repaired 3 or 4 years in a row. Always have lane restrictions on parallel roads that aren't being worked on during those times as well.
      Then there are the streets that get repaved and then dug back up so the sewers underneath can be worked on (I'm talking 3 weeks later). Good planning, city engineers!
      Maybe a warranty should be demanded of the contractors who do the work, or make road construction and maintenance part of state or local government departments and take the contractors out of the loop.

Mark because here in europe toll booths or automatic fast lane toll collection systems have been in place on all high traffic highways and state roads for decades and there is never a funding problem because the toll prices is higher in rush traffic hours than other times of day. Its higher in rush traffic to punish drivers for standing in cue polluting more. Incentivizing to drive in hours outside of rush traffic to spread out the load on the roads and create better flow throughout the rush traffic (Works Somewhat to lower the traffic). Its also enough to cover the cost of maintenance each year + a reserve amount set aside for emergency repairs.

    So, some suggestions: (1) they need to come up with something different than asphalt, which is just a "band-aid". They need to research something longer lasting. (2) Charge vehicles by weight. Heavier vehicles (18 wheelers/commercials trucks) put more wear and tear on the roadways than lighter cars (3) as they suggested, charge by mile driven, but not sure exactly how they would do this. Maybe get odometer readings every year for your state inspection? Maybe create more toll roads? (4) Cities/States should come up with more alternate transportation to get more cars off the roads, such as buses/light rail/trains. Those alternate transportation will need to be electric!

    Here in France the roads are quite fine and periodically maintained but what the public doesnt know is that the recent maximum speed reduction from 90kmph to 80 kmph was made not only for the safety( and polution) but also to reduce the wear of the surface. Creating new roads is highly not recommended because it will increase the future costs of maintaining . A different strategy is to reduce the lanes ( and the surface) of all roads under used. The weight of the cars is also a factor that increase the wear of the road. The development of the TGV ( high speed train) had as one of the purposes the reduction of the traffic on the highways and roads. Because the annual budget for maintaining is about 20 billions euros, every measure can save a dozens milions euros a year.

    The issue with higher fuel taxes is that citizens would expect all roads (state and urban) to get improved/blame the government for obvious tax increases on their cost of living plus the extra cost needed to repair most roads would be more than double which then drives more EV adoption. In a world with high EV car use, where does the needed money come from. Road pricing based also on when you are driving, road taxes on top of fuel tax. In theory the answer is public transport reducing individual car (and road) use but what happens in a state like New Mexico where distances are vast and making public transport cover just most of its running cost is very difficult. Remember like Germany, the US military was one of the main supporters of the highway system.

      Crappy money management of the government is a major issue. Potholes literally take years to get fixed. They cost thousands of dollars of damage to cars. Not to mention they make driving much more dangerous.

    I had no idea so few of Indiana’s roads were considered in poor condition.
    I’ve always responded to surveys from politicians with, “spend money on roads please.” Then they ask me to pay $50 more per year for driving a hybrid and essentially dodging their gas tax.
    Can’t say I didn’t ask for it 🤷🏼‍♂️
